This article was from a newspaper in Troy, Obion County, Tn. and was sent to me by Mr. Ben Brewer. This is being posted here because Annis (Anna) lived here at one time. She appears on the 1840 census of Stewart co, Tn. with her husband Francis Collins b. March 11, 1791 S.C. Francis Collins died in 1844. OLDEST WOMAN IN AMERICA Mrs. Anna Collins of Troy, Tennessee Is in her 108th year. Mrs. Anna Collins of Troy, Tennessee is probably the oldest woman in the United States. She was born in Robertson County, Tennessee April 17, 1788 and is therefore in her 108th year. Her husband, Francis Collins, was born March 11, 1791 and came from South Carolina to West Tennessee. He was one of the most noted methodist evangelists that was ever in the south. It is said of him that in one of his revival meetings such enthusiasm was manifested that there were in two weeks 845 conversions and 456 accessions to the church. Five children were born to Francis and Anna Collins, two of whom are still living, the eldest being a man of three score and six years. She has used tobacco constantly for fifty-five years and is as strong today as most women at the age of 45. Does anyone know or connect Annis (Anna) Collins? Will share any information Thanks 'In prosperity our friends know us; in adversity we know our friends" LaNoy Collins 10620 SW 27th Ave D-3 Ocala, Fl. 34476 golffer4@mercury.net http://www.geocities.com/rainforest/3860/ Have a nice day. I've been meaning to ask... I have copies of some old photos (originals in my cousin's possession) that have puzzled me from the beginning. The surnames common to the family give no hint that anything unusual might be suspected-Collins, Higgins and Peyton are perfectly common, old American names. But, when one looks at these pictures, they are not English or Irish looking people. One of them has a very AmIndian look to her, another is a dead ringer for O. J. Simpson. All are, apparently, olive complexioned, black hair (my mother had auburn highlights), high cheekbone and deep set eyes. I have dead-ended on this family, in both directions, and they remain a mystery to me. Looking at my mother (Wagner), grandmother (Wyruck), g grandmother (Collins), and gg grandmother (Peyton), I can see the maternal blood ran strong, for each one of them is their mother's image (until you get to me). I feel that if I could understand the bloodline of this exotic looking family, that maybe it would be a clue that might help me restart my maternal genealogy. can anyone suggest anything? The kinda strange thing is, the earliest ancestor's photos don't look as exotic as their children's, and yes, they were blood related. I've seen the family Bible and have other records, as well. The earliest ancestors (Francis Lee Collins and Mary Jane Peyton) just look homespun American. I did check into the Mellungeon's, but could not find anything there. Collins is the only one of these surnames that has a Mellungeon background, and I can't connect, as yet, with any of them. Cornelia

I am looking for information on my great-grandfather's family. My great-grandfather, Daniel COLLINS, was born in 1868 in Fletcher (Miami County), Ohio and moved to the Shelby County (Ohio) area about 1878. His father's name was William COLLINS who was born around October 1829. His mother's name was Elizabeth Ralston COLLINS, born October 4, 1845. The family lived in the Fletcher (Miami County), Ohio area prior to moving to Shelby County. The 1880 Shelby County (Ohio) census indicates that William COLLINS' father was born in Ireland. Thanks, Darlene Kramer

Hi: My name is Ann Hoskins-Brown and I am new to the Collins list. I am seeking information on Robert Collins of Culpeper Co. VA. According to the information I have, he enlisted in the 8th VA Regiment of Foot commanded by James Wood in April of 1779 and served through November of 1779. He appears in Franklin Co. KY in 1801 and is on the 1805 tax list with his sons where he had 140 acres on Benson Creek. He died in Franklin Co. in 1816 and is buried near Alton, KY. His children include Thomas, Dudley, Robert, Sarah (Sally), Nancy, Catherine (Kitty Kate), Edmund, and Richard. I descend from Thomas who married Mary Ann Bourne in 1811, Franklin Co, KY. I have Robert Collins father as JW Collins, but have no idea what JW stood for. Any information would be appreciated. I have really hit a brick wall and now that I've discovered the Collins mess web site - I understand why! Thanks for any help -- Ann ahoskinsbr@aol.com
Beth: My James COLLINS (as best I know) was born in 1810 and died in 1869. He lived in Bertie Co. NC - near Plymouth. He was married three times. My grandmother was one of his children. Her mother was Martha Bowers. It is still possible that we have the same family. The story that I have on James (passed down from others) is that his parents died when he was a young boy and he was left in the care of others (because he had no known relatives). The people he was left with went through the property that his parents left and then they apprenticed him out to people that were mean and beat him. He was cutting trees in the woods with the slaves and a slave gave him his shirt and told him to run. I don't know any more until he was grown . He was a master mechanic, built homes, cotton gins, and coffins. He had a plantation in the Indian Woods Section of Bertie Co. He was a farmer. The name of his first marriage is unknown. It was stated that she may have been Indian or half Indian. Their children were Elizabeth A., b.1830, mar William Henry Jackson; Nancy, b.1832, mar ____ Skyles; and Martha. The second marriage was Martha Bowers. Their children were: Laura, b1847, mar John Skiles; John, b 1849; Mary Winifred, b 1850, mar Thomas Augustus Berry (my grandparents); and Louisa, b. 1854, mar ____ White. I have more information. If you see anything that comes in your line, please let me know. I'm keeping your message in case John and Mahala are in fact the parents of my James Collins. Thanks, Betty.
Beth& Betty, My name is Brenda Collins Dillon. I have been searching for info on the parents of Meredith Collins who was b. 1760 Va and d. 1840 in Pike Co. KY. Nobody has ever found the parents of him either however he was in Wilkes Co. in 1796, married a first time in NC and had at least a son, Bradley Collins, and an unnamed daughter. I loose him from 1797-1800 when he appears in Russell Co. Va with a second wife and now 4 children so whereever he was durning those 3 years he lost one wife took a second and had two more children. I only mention this because when I first started researching him I was told the trail would bring me back to Plymouth in NC. Living around Meredith in Russell Co. was a James Collins that also appears to follow him to Floyd Co. KY in 1810. One researcher I spoke with from Oregon, Eula Conley believed that Meredith was a son of James. I found no proof. As a matter of fact I am only one of a number of researchers that have never been able to locate records of parents or marriage records for that first wife. Do you have a Meredith in your line? He named his first son Bradley which I always wondered if Bradley could have been the maiden name of that first wife. Any help would be appreciated. Brenda Collins Dillon
