    3. The Josiah Collins, brother of Stephen, who married Jurette Bohannon is very famous and much has been written about him. Recently Richard Prewitt of Des Moines, Iowa, published a book, "The Collins Book, Joseph Collins and Lucy Marchbanks, Their Descendants." In this book, he names Josiah, the hunter and founder of Lexington, as a son of Joseph and Lucy. Another good book which has a lot of information about Josiah is "Lexington 1779, Pioneer Kentucky as described by Early Settlers" by Bettye Lee Mastin. Researchers have reported that my earliest known ancestor, Zachariah Collins, was a son of Josiah but to date I have found no proof of this. > Subject: COLLINS > Date: Sun, 01 Mar 1998 08:53:20 -0600 > From: Robbintina Harrison <redbird@interaccess.com> > To: COLLINS-L@rootsweb.com > > Anyone researching COLLINS in Estill County KY? > -- Best of wishes in your journey down the river of life. http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/c/o/l/Ruth-A-Collins/

    3. I noticed an inquiry about a Thomas Collins who lived in Oklahoma. Many members of my Collins family did the Cherokee Strip run and homesteaded property in Oklahoma. I can't make a connection with the information you sent but there are several men named Thomas in the family. Why don't you check out my homepage and see if you can make a connection. If you are not familar with Family Tree Maker, you need to scroll down and click on next page to get the next generation. You can use their search engines to look for specific names.

    1. Levi Collins
    2. RUCollins2
    3. Nancy & a few others, Some have been looking for some misplaced Collins, William being one. Here is something that was sent to me in 1989 from The Pike Co. Historical Society by Dorcas Hobbs. I thought someone might use something in it. Levi Collins was born about 1815 in Pike County Kentucky to parents born in NC. According to family tradition he was born a Mullins and raised by a Collins family, and he may have been part Cherokee. In 1835 Levi and Archibald Collins lived in the household headed by AMY COLLINS, evidently a farm owned by William Collins,s/o of Meredith Collins. Levi was living in this same household in 1837. Amy and Meredith lived between Dorton and Shelby Gap. Nancy JOHNSON was born about 1915 in Scott County Kentucky(vorginia). Her father was born in Tennessee and her mother in Kentucky. According to family tredition she was Cherokee. Levi and Nancy were almost certainly Melungeons...a mixed raced group from Indian and caucasion stock. They may have been descendants of Portugese sailors stranded in SC. in late 1600s. In 1836 Levi and Nancy married in Pike Co. KY. By 1840 they were living in Logan Co. (West) Vorginia. They ,oved to Conley Fork of Mud River in Boone Co in 1857. In 1858 they were taxed for two horses worth $45, 33 livestock worth $75, and furniture worth $30. They did not own slaves, a carriage ,clocks, or watches. Levi, three of his sons (William P., Fransis Marion, and James K. Polk& son- in-law, Joshua Wells) enlisted in the 34th Battalion, Virginia Calvary. They were on the Jones-Imbroden raid into WV, and protected Lee durning his retreat from Gettsburg. Levi was promoted to Captain and commanded about 40 troops. Fransis was shot in the forearm and captured at Rheastown, Tenn. in Oct. 1863. He was imprisioned in Camp Chase at Columbus, Ohio. Polk died of fever at Harts Creek,WV in 1863. In early 1864 Levi was shot through the knee. After the war, William moved to Kentucky and recieved a pension beginning in 1915. Levi and Nancy probably moved to Harts Creek in NOW Lincoln Co. WV in 1866 and lived there for the rest of their lives. A family tredition tells that Nancy used to ride a bull from Harts Creek, along the Drawdy Creek to Charleston where she bought salt, Nancy died after 1884 and Levi after 1890. 3. Brenda, The Merriatt Collins I have had a wife named Nancy Essie Basham.I'm not sure if Basham was her maiden name. One son was named Samuel, aka R.S. aka Rass. At least this is what my older relatives have told me. Samuel's death certificate said he was born in 1876 in Va. If anyone can help me track down these three, I would be grateful.
