I would appreciate any information on the following family or branches. Steven Marquardt smarquardt@juno.com ===== John and Christina Soliday Collins John Collins (Abt.1789-1873) was our ancestor who came from Bath County, Virginia in 1815 to Salem, Indiana. His parents may have been John and Hannah Collins from Cork County, Ireland. The family homestead may have been on both sides of the Greenbrier River in what is now Greenbrier County, West Virginia. He fought in the Battle of New Orleans on January 8, 1815. After this battle he came directly to what is now Jefferson Township, Washington County, Indiana and entered land there at the U.S. Land Office. In July 1816, he married Christina Soliday (1792-1886) whose father (Jacob) had moved his family from Kentucky to the Indiana Territory in 1809 and entered the land adjacent to that acquired by Collins. They had seven children: Lewis B., John L., Andrew, Belinda, Alexander, Mary Jane and Samira. He built the first brick house in the area in 1828 and it is still standing with brick stuccoed over with frame portion added. The farm is now owned by Rev. Aaron Fisher. Between 1854-1856, Lewis B., John L., Andrew and Belinda who was married to Allen S. Fowler of Kentucky went to Traer, Tama County, Iowa. Alexander and Mary Jane who married Joseph D. Hague of Tennessee stayed around Salem, Indiana. In 1878, Lewis B. Collins (1818-1894) went to Nebraska (Kearney Co.). He had seventeen children: Three (Christopher Columbus, Sarah and Elizabeth) by first wife, Eleanor Montgomery, two (George Washington and Lewis Cass) by second wife, Mary Jane Tucker, and twelve (Mary, Levina, Rhoda, Hannah, Charles, Emma, Christina, Belinda, John, Celia, Joseph and Milton) by third wife, Christina McVey. Their descendants are in Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado, California, Wisconsin and Washington. John L. Collins (1820-1913) had eight children (Martin, Louisa, John, Margaret, Milton, Merritt, Douglas and Columbus) by Nancy Phillips. Most of them went to South Dakota, Montana, Washington, California, Minnesota and Illinois while some are in Iowa, Georgia and Florida. Andrew Collins (1823-1914) had nine children (Cornelius, Harvey, Alonza, Byron, Verna, William, Amanda, Edwin and Isabella) by Clementine Parr. Their descendants are in living in Iowa and Illinois. Belinda (Collins) Fowler (1827-1896) had eight children (Lucy, John, Frank, Caroline, Mary, Albert, George and William) by Allen S. Fowler of Kentucky. In 1880, they moved to Calhoun County and Woodbury County, Iowa and some of the descendants went to Canada (British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan) and Montana. Alexander Collins (1830-1899) had five children (Mary, James, John, Ora and Dempsey) by Rachael Spencer. And their descendants are around Salem, Indiana. Mary Jane (Collins) Hague (1834-1919) had three children (John, William and Lewis) by Joseph D. Hague of Tennessee. Their descendants are in Indianapolis and around Salem, Indiana. Samira L. Collins (1839-1839) did not live to womanhood.

Laura, Hi, I am new to the Collins list and I wonder what the word the word Melungeon. I keep seeing it, but decided I would never know unless I asked. Welcome to the list: People have been asking this for many years and you might get many answers. To me Melungeon means "mixture" . In Colonial times the settlers intermarried with the Indians, traders and Trappers that came from everywhere. Women were not plentiful and men took Indian women for wifes. This was the starting of a melting pot of nationalities, later the slaves were introduced into the melting pot, then as the country grew and borders started to enlarge settlements were discovered in the mountains creating a bigger melting pot and the Melungeons were born. Hi: I have some COLLINS ancestors from Nansemond Co, VA and later Gates Co, NC I'm hoping someone can help me. My ancestor Graham COLLINS was born in Nansemond Co, VA abt. 1805. He married Nansey ARLINE in 1821 (b. 1800) in not-far-away Gates Co, NC. His kids are Elijah, Hugh, Hester, Jerusha, and Nanetta. In my research, I have not found too many Collins in Nansemond County, and my main focus right now is to find Graham's parents. So far the only Collins that are candidates are Thomas, David, and William. I think that Graham had a brother Elvy, born 1806. Hugh Wilbur Collins later moved to Gates County NC and lived out his days there. Please let me know if any of these names ring a bell, or if you have other Collins in Nansemond county; maybe we can help each other out! Thanks Tom Rima tcalexi@pacbell.net

Hi, Cuzzins and Seekers: following data is self-explanatory. I just wish I had the rest of the data: I intend to send for the "rest of the story" very soon. Shirley: bobert@panacom.com ------------------------------------------------------- Wilkes County, North Carolina, Heritage Book, Volume I MEREDITH COLLINS -- 468 Meredith Collins was born in Virginia, in 1760, and was an American Revolutionary War soldier in Montgomery Co., Virginia. A monument which includes his name was unveiled in Pike Co., KY, May 30, 1929, by the Pikesville Chapter DAR. The name of his first wife is not yet known. The only known child of his first marriage was a son named, Bradley. His second marriage was to Polly Holloway between 1790 and 1800. The children of his second marriage were: Archibald, James, and William. Meredith lived for a while in Wilkes Co., NC, and appears on the 1796 Wilkes Co. Tax List. He migrated to Russell Co., VA, after 1796. About 1809, he settled in Floyd Co., KY. Meredith Collins was among the white pioneer families of Floyd Co. in 1810. About 1822, he moved on to Pike Co., KY, and died there in the latter part of 1841. The known children of Meredith Collins are: Bradley, Archibald, James, and William. Bradley Collins (1787-185?) was born in NC, possibly in Wilkes Co. He was a farmer by occupation, but also followed other pursuits. He migrated to Russell Co., VA, with his parents between 1796 and 1799. About 1811, Bradley followed his father, Meredith, to Floyd Co., KY. The Floyd Co. 1820 Census shows that Bradley, in addition to himself and his wife, had one male and two females under the age of fourteen in his household. The male was his son, Andrew. Later census records show additional children. The name of his first wife is not yet known. About 1826[?], he moved to Clay Co., KY. While in Clay Co., Andrew married Betsy Ann Sizemore, Mar.. 31, 1838. He sold his land in 1839, and shortly afterwards, he and his family, Andrew and his wife and son, Lewis, traveled by flat boat down the Kentucky and Ohio Rivers to Missouri. They were in Carroll Co., MO, in 1840, but later settled near Keytesville, Chariton Co., MO. It was here that Bradley received a land grant in May of 1841. Bradley and Andrew raised and sold crops of corn, cotton, and tobacco. About 1844, Bradley and Andrew sold their land in Missouri, and moved to Centerville, Appanoose Co., Iowa, on the Chariton River. They farmed in addition to running a ferry across the Chariton River. Andrew (1811-ca. 1873) was living in 1850, in Appanoose Co., Iowa Census, with his family, Betsy Ann (wife), Lewis, Samson, Archibald, and Polly Ann, and his father Bradley, age 63, born in North Carolina. Bradley died in either Appanoose Co., Iowa, or Hancock Co., Illinois. About 1856, Andrew moved to Warsaw, Hancock Co., IL, where Polly Ann, his daughter, attended her first year in school. About 1859, Andrew moved to Marion Co., MO. The 1860 Census shows the following additional family members: Eliza, age 9, and Eli, age 5. They were both born in Iowa. Andrew and Betsy's sons, Samson, Lewis, and Archibald were veterans of the Civil War. Archibald Collins (1800-ca.1886), born in Russell Co., VA. He married Margaret (Peggy) Coots on May 18, 1824, in Pike Co., KY. He engaged in agriculture in Roane Co., WV, and he possibly died there between 1882 and 1890. His children were: Matilda, John Wesley, Euorkia, Henry Newberry, Jenny, Washington, Lucinda, and Reece. James Collins (1804 - ?) was born in Russell Co., VA. He married Susan Holloway on Oct. 15, 1824, in Pike Co., KY. He migrated from Pike Co. prior to the 1830's. His whereabouts is still unknown. William Collins was born Apr. 13, 1806, and became a "Jack of all trades". He was a lumberman, gunsmith, owner and operator of a dry goods store, and a minister of the Primitive Baptist Church. On Mar. 22, 1829, William married Mary (Polly) Mullins. Their children were: William, Pricy, Lucinda, Louisa, John, Arvid, Floyd, Arminda, and Samson. On Nov. 25, 1860, he married Mary A (Molly) Hatfield. The children of this marriage were: Samuel, Tobias, Archibald, Nancy Jane, Aaron, Levi, Ancel, and Louemma. William died in Nicholas Co., WV, on March 30, 1896. Sources: Research in Public Records --- John D. Young ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wilkes County, North Carolina Heritage Book, Volume I [incomplete article] VARDY (VARDI-VARDE) NAVARRAH COLLINS - 469 Vardy Collins, born 1764 in NC, listed on the tax list of Wilkes County during the 1790's, married Margaret (Peggy) Gibson, b. 1773 in Virginia. Vardy married Peggy in NC, and came to what is now Hancock County, Tennessee. He is listed as a taxpayer 1809-1812, in Hawkins County. They had the following children, all born in Hawkins County, except the oldest, who was born in NC: 1 - Lottie, also called Letitia or Peggy, born 1791, married Timothy WIlliams, born 7 November 1808, NC, son of Charles. 2 - Morgan, born 1798, married Minta Gibson, born 1825, in TN. 3 - Allen, born in 1802, married 1st Rachel Reed, born 1804 TN. 2d - Rachel Nichols, born 1831, TN; died 1921 in Hancock County. 4 - Alford, born 1810, married Elizabeth Mullins, daughter of James and Clarah (Martin) Mullins. 5 - Ethel or Effie, born 1812, married Alexander Gowins, born 1815, TN. 6 - Claricia, born 1813, married Isum Biggs, born 1813, TN, son of William and Elizabeth (Collins) Biggs. 7 - Varda, born 1817, married Elizabeth "Betty" Maxey. The 1830, 1840, and 1850 census of Hawkins County, TN, and the Tennessee Land Grants show Vardy Collins to be living there. These land grants were all in what is now called Vardy, Hancock County. The land extended from the Virginia line to the Mulberry Gap-Sneedville road. It included land from the top of Newman's Ridge to the top of Powell's Mountain. Where they received the money for this much land is open to speculation. Possibly it was for military services; possible, but improbably is that Vardy was a pirate. Some sources say that Peggy was descended from the rich pirates who plied the North Carolina waters. Whatever the source of his funds, he was considered one of the wealthier man in the area. Vardy and Peggy operated a hotel-boarding house at the foot of Newman's Ridge where a big sulphur spring is still running. After his death, his descendants owned and operated the hotel until the early 1900's. Vardy and Peggy's descendants can be found in all walks of life. Alford Collins, son of Vardy and Peggy, born 1810, married Elizabeth Mullins, born 1819, daughter of James and Clarah Martin Mullins. Alford and Elizabeth had a large family. One of their children was Batey (Bata) Collins, b. 1844, Hawkins County. He married Cynthia Collins, born 1843, daughter of Simeon and Frankie (Bunch) Collins. Frankie was born in 1805, in NC; died 1885, in Hancock County. She was a daughter of Benjamin and Mary (Dotson) Bunch. Batey and Cynthia Collins owned and operated the Collins Boarding House at the foot of Newman's Ridge. They had children: 1 - Noah, born 1878, married Alice Lavin Bales. Her first husband, Morgan Bales, was drowned in Powell's River in Lee County, VA. Noah was a farmer, stock trader, and owned a general merchandise store in Vardy. ---------------------------- copied page ends - darn it! - person who requested this Collins data was only interest in Meredith Collins. Well - I intend to send for the rest of this data - or as much is as possible to acquire. Maybe some of you can add to this with data you already have. ===================

Shirley, I have both articles taken from the Heritage book from Wilkes Co. NC. This is well written and documented by Mr. Young to a point. He neglects to say that there were other children and so far none of those children have been verified. I have worked over 20 years trying to get my John W. Collins who I find living in the household up to and including 1820 but disappears after that.Meredith fathered 4 other sons and 2 daughters that is not mentioned. Family rumors handed down from the children of William Collins ,one of his verified sons, speaks of operating a gristmill on TUG River, the smelting of silver, and that there was a relationship with Vardy Collins. I have records showing Merdy and Vardy both being in Wilkes Co. NC at same times and living on land that joined each other. There was only 4 years difference in their age. William Collins married 1) Mary MULLINS d/o William H. Mullins and Betsy Roberts.2) Maryanne HATFIELD d/o Joseph HATFIELD and Nancy EVANS My John W. Collins b. 1799-1802 ( census ) married twice, but I have never verified that first marriage. ( It is possible John married Lydia Toner 1821 Grainger Co. as per Riffe Book written by Fred J. Riffe 1995 If this is the case it throws another known Melungeon into the pot as Griffin COLLINS signed the marriage bands....... Is Meredith, Vardimon, and Griffin linked together????I would love the answer to that) John W. Collins does show up on McDowell Co. census 1860&70 married to Mary ROARK w/ children Alfred b. 1853 Tazewell Co., Arnetta"Nettie" b. 1855 Tazewell Co. and Richard b. 1858 Tazewell /McDowell Co. Subject: Whattayamean possible! Date: Tue, 03 Mar 1998 21:01:50 -0600 From: cas25@lx.net (cas25) To: rac@azstarnet.com Dear Cuz, Remember, you are just one, not yet found, ancestor from having the same line as myself. If we could just find out who it was that was the wife of Old Josiah and mother of your Zachariah we would be home free. They are just covering that up--those Josiah folks--they just will not talk to us--yet. I think she was full bloodied Cherokee lass just like that cousin in Georgia said she was. I also believe that my Nathaniel's first wife may have been Cherokee for same reason--nobody will talk about the "Burrows". Dead ends on Duck River--Cherokee country! BTW, did you check War of 1812 for old Zachariah? National Archives for a record of his service?? He would have to have been only about 16 years old to serve. Some of those soldiers listed as Tennessee Volunteers were obviously from Kentucky, i.e. my Nathaniel. Keep the faith! On Another issue--who is the moderator of that "Collins BB" that you sent information from? I'm not a member of any of those boards, and they kicked me off of one for articulating (arguing) certain issues and the following is one of those issues: (copied from your last message)i.e.: Collins, Stephen (10 Aug 1744-6 Aug 1825 Estill Co KY) married Catherine McIntosh. Now, Stephen Collins, of Halifax Co. Va. has as his wife, Catherine McKendree, dtr of James McKendree, aka Catey Collins who was certified by Halifax Court in 1766, book 11, page 479, as an heir of James McIntree.(General Index to Court Orders, Halifax County, Defendants under my eyeball at this moment.)I also have his Will, and his "relict's" distribution to Catherine and Stephen Collins. I've gotten a little stressed out about trying to correct some of these things because it seems that their attitude is "Don't confuse me with any of your damn facts, my minds made up.!" Anyway, if you have correspondence and rapport with the sender of that and wish to "correct it" please do so, and if you want, refer to me to articulate in detail and provide documentation. I'll be glad to do so to an open minded recepient. (Of course, I would have to admit that correcting that--removes General Alexander McIntosh from their ancestry!!!!<GGG>.)(In the process, also, removes General Byrd Prewitt, who never existed). Get after me--I must repent or move to Midland.-besides it's Lent. Luv, Charles.
