Copied from: The Durham-Orange Genealogical Society Newsletter Volume 8 No 7 November 1998 Have you hit a proverbial dead end in your research? The following trends may help to analyze your problems. 1...There are approximately three generations per century. 2..Average age for men to marry was 24. They rarely married before age 16. 3...The average age for women to marry was 20. They rarely married before age 16. 4...First marriages were usually between couples near the same age. Women generally outlived their husbands, but older widowers frequently married much younger women who had never been married before. 5...Birth generally occurred at two-year intervals. Frequently the first child was born a year after marriage. As a woman aged, the interval between births grew slightly. Child bearing generally ended around age 45. 6...Families and neighbors usually migrated together from their previous location. Women rarely traveled alone. 7...Men usually married women from their neighborhood, but if a seemingly "strange" woman turned up, check the man's former home. Often men returned to their prior residence to find a wife. 8...If you can't find an old parent, chances are he/she "went West" with a son. 9..If you have a male ancestor born around 1840, strongly consider Civil War service. 10...If your ancestor has a virtue name (e.g. Patience, Charity, Silence) consider a New England heritage. 11...Children were often named for grandparents, both male and female. 12....Frequently middle names or even a first name was the mother's or grandmother's maiden name, especially if the name was repeated through several related families. ______________________________

Hi All, I am looking for any information on JOHN W. COLLINS - born 9, Aug, 1873 in East Liberty and died 5, Mar, 1940 in Aspinwall at the Veterans Hospital. He was the oldest son of Francis & Mary (McCOURT) COLLINS and brother to Francis & Patrick Collins of Pittsburgh (twins) and Rose Ann COLLINS-SMITH of Pitcairn, PA. John served with Teddy Roosevelt at the Battle of San Juan Hill. He left the army in 1902 and went to work for Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing in East Pittsburgh. He left there in 1926 and went to work as the liason officer of the Department of Pennsylvania, United Spanish American War Veterans. He had 4 children - John & Frank Collins, Alice B. Church, and Hazel Nottleman. I pulled all of this information from an obituary I found in my grandmother's documents. I hate to say this - but none of my family knows a thing about him or his children. Sure hope some one out there can help me. I am seeking information all along this COLLINS family. My ggg grandfather was John COLLINS, born about 1795 Virginia, married Elizabeth JOHNSON, 17 October 1817 Pendleton County, Kentucky. His father may have been James COLLINS. Elizabeth JOHNSON was born in Kentucky and possibly the daughter of Nelson JOHNSON. Their son was Ogilvie "OGilby" COLLINS, born 5 December 1830 in Fayette County, Kentucky, married Mary Ann Cheatham on 23 Aug. 1849 in Lewis County, Missouri. Ogilvie served as a Private in Company "D" of the 69th Enrolled Missouri Militia, and was a blacksmith and Preacher. He died 1913 in Lewis County, Missouri. Mary Ann CHEATHAM was born on 5 May 1831 in Kentucky and was the daughter of Archibald CHEATHAM and Ester HARE. Mary Ann died in 1916 in Lewis County, Missouri. They had children: Oliver Wendell COLLINS, William F COLLINS, John M. COLLINS and Ella M.COLLINS. Ella married Edward PORTER. Ogilvie and Mary Anns son Oliver Wendell COLLINS was born on 1853 at Monticello, Missouri and died on 1947 at Napa, Canyon County, Idaho. He married Nancy Francis WAGGENER on 1874 in Lewis County, Missouri. Nancy Frances was the daughter of Simeon Green WAGGENER and Rachel MCALISTER. Oliver W. and Nancy Francis had 10 children of whom 3 survived: Henry Herbert COLLINS born on 1877 in Lewis County Missouri and died 1941, married his cousin Martha Velora WAGGENER born 1881 and died 1949; Roy George COLLINS born 1889, married Nellie __, and had a child named Margaret. They inherited the farm in Canyon County, Idaho, from Oliver. Possible other surviving child was Simeon COLLINS. Henry Herbert COLLINS and Martha Velora WAGGENER had six children: Harold, Ara Frances, Russell O., Nera Mae, Betty Elizabeth, and Richard Benjamin, all deceased. Thanks for your help. Fellow Searchers: I haven't posted for a while and decided to share a letter that I had saved from a cousin, Eula Collins Conley, who was a great researcher. She left behind a lot of info on our Collins line that gave many of us a head start. Eula , and my mother, use to communicate by writting letters back and forth and I have saved a stack of them. Here is one. If anybody sees anything that rings a bell or might help me in locating who Meredith's parents were I would really appreciate it. Brenda Collins Dillon #1 Mrs. Russell W. Conley of 3660 S.E. Tolman St. Portland, OR 97202 2 Nov 1980 My great grandparents were Meredith and Polly (Holloway) Collins, and I am the granddaughter of William Collins and Mary (Molly) (Hatfield) Collins. Several of my Collins relatives learned through their parents that the name had not always been Collins; that Meredith had deserted during the Revolutionary War and changed his name to Collins. Meredith did not desert as he is shown in the records on the Circuit Court of Montgomery County, Virginia. He was under the command of Capt. James McDaniell. Pike County, Ky. has a monument with the names of sixteen Revolutionary War soldiers and Meredith's name is on it. The 1820 census of Floyd County, Kentucky shows Meredith Collins, his son Bradley and one Valentine Collins as "Free Persons of Color". I feel sure that Valentine was a brother to Meredith as they were in Wilkes Co. N.C. at the same time along with one Vardy Collins who probably was related. Meredith was in Russell Co. Virginia from 1799 through 1807. Valentine was in Hawkins Co. Tennessee as early as 1805 or before. his son Joshua was born in 1805 in Tennessee. Joshua died in Johnson County, Kentucky in 1854. His parents were shown as Valentine and Dicy Collins. Valentine was still living in Johnson County in 1843. He was not shown in the 1850 census. I have been trying to locate the grave of Meredith Collins who no doubt had a marker as his grave had been located prior to May 30 1929 when the monument bearing his name was erected. Also, I am still trying to find the date and place of his marriage. Meredith died in 1841 in Pike County, Kentucky. All of Meredith's descendants had been told that we were Irish and that either Meredith or his father came from Ireland. Supposedly they came to fight in the Revolutionary War, but this information was incorrect as Meredith was born in Virginia in 1760. I have been greatly disillusioned as to where my Collins ancestry came from, and now after reading the book "The Melungeons Yesterday and Today" I'm not sure where they came from and why. My grandfather William Collins was a Baptist preacher. His brothers were Archibald,John, Bradley, James, and I believe he had two sisters not yet identified. #2 this is a letter recieved by the co host of my website in which has info in that Eula was seeking from another researcher. Hi Bj !! I have found something we may want to look into !! I rec'd some copies of a few of the William Paul Grohse papers from a friend in Tucson, AZ. One of the pages is a letter to Mr. Grohse from a Mrs. R. W. Conley of Portland Oregon. The letter is dated 1973. Mrs. Conley says that Meridith Collins is her g grandfather. In the letter, she is asking Mr. Grohse about Meridith being in the Rev. War and not being able to locate any record..she says she wrote to the General Services Administration because Meridith was supposed to have applied for a pension and received land grant in Pike County Ky, but there was no record.... Mrs. Conley also states that a Benjamin Collins married Mary Jane Dye in Pike Co, Ky in 1791..and she deduces that "something is wrong with this"...Pike Co. was not created until 1821 !! I would like to find out more about this marriage.. my g grandma was Mary Frances Dye and I am at a dead end on that family also !! I also would like to find out more on this DYE line. I should now be in the "plain text" mode thanks to good advice sent my way. I'm new at this, so any help is much appreciated. I'm searching for any info on John Collins. He was in Gloucester County, NJ until 1802/03. At that time he led a group of Quakers turned Methodist to around Cincinnati, OH. He was supposed to have been married to Sarah Blackman. Mary Bailey Dunn was John Collin's great-aunt. In 1802, John Collins was 33 years old. E-mail: mggrab@polarcomm.com

Am looking for information on Michael Collins born in Ireland around 1831. He married a Alice Mullins born around 1842 in 1865. They were married in Pennsylvania. Michael and Alice had several children and I am one of the great great granddaughters. Michael died in Scranton, Pa. in 1905. I have not been able to locate a death certificate for him. I am told the State did not maintain these certificates until 1906. I am also told that the the county could not find a death certificate in 1905. I do not know if Michael immigated from Ireland with parents, other brothers/sisters etc. I am trying to find his parents and possible siblings. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry about the first try. I will try to send the message using plain text not html. Ann, Your query caught my eye because of the name Thomas Dudley Collins. We may have some connection. Please let me know if you have come across any of the following names. So far, I have traced my line back to Lewis Collins who was born in VA 1780, by 1810 was living in Jessamine County, KY, and died in 1852 probably in Jessamine County, KY. He married Sallie Cleveland and they had several children including five daughters and at least three sons. Of those children, I only have names and information for John C. Collins born 1830 in KY (married Eliza C. born 1835), George Lewis Collins born 1832 in KY (married Lucy Stephenson born 1850 in IA), and Ambrose Collins born 1843 in KY. George Lewis Collins named his first son Thomas Dudley Collins (born 1874 in KN). It may be just a coincidence, but because of the name and the VA/KY connection I am hoping there is some relationship to your line. George Lewis Collins is my great grandfather. He and Lucy had two other children, Edith Jessamine "Jessie" Collins (Holmquist) born 1876 in KN, and Kenneth Lewis Collins born 1889 in KN. I have additional information including pictures back to George Lewis Collins that I would like to share with anyone interested in this family line. She is an earnest member of the Presbyterian church and contributes liberally toward its support. Owing to impaired health Mr. Barnes retired from business in 1905 and thereafter enjoyed a period of well earned leisure. In 1917, at the close of the holiday season, he went to Daytona, Florida, hoping that the change of climate would prove beneficial, but the end was rapidly approaching, and on February 27, 1917, when seventy years of age, "God's finger touched him, and he slept." He found life well worth the living and possessed a frank, genial and optimistic nature that won him friends wherever he went. He was a keen analyst of men and conditions and was ever quick to recognize and appreciate true worth. His life was filled with unrecorded acts of kindness and his memory is revered by all who had the honor of his closer acquaintance. Following is an excerpt from a tribute paid to Mr. Barnes by Andrew G. Leonard in the Lexington Herald under date of March 3, 1917. "For twenty-five years William S. Barnes was a leader in everything that pertained to the development of the thoroughbred, an advocate of all reforms that were wise and tended to promote the interests of racing. He was firm in his convictions, yet easily influenced by those in whom he had confidence, and at all times tolerant of the opinions of others. No more striking figure has been seen on the turf during its history than William S. Barnes, superb in physique, commanding in appearance, and with that kindliness that bespeaks the sportsman and the gentleman. He was known to every admirer of the thoroughbred, from the owner of the most powerful stable to the humblest employe, and for each he had a gracious manner, a cheery word of greeting and a charm that made him beloved by all." OVERTON HOBERT SWANGO, M. D. The name of Dr. Overton Hobert Swango has long been one of prominence in medical circles of Jackson, and his success has resulted from thorough scientific training and concentrated effort. He was born October 29, 1872, in Wolfe county, Kentucky, and his parents were Samuel and Evelyn (Kash) Swango. He was reared on the home farm and received his early instruction in one of the country schools of his native county. He afterwards attended the Hazel Green Institute and in 1903 received a diploma from the Kentucky School of Medicine, now a part of the University of Louisville. He has followed his profession in Jackson for over twenty years, and during 1923 took a course in the New York Post-Graduate Medical School and College. He utilizes his knowledge to the best advantage in his efforts to restore health and has been accorded a large practice in recognition of his skill. Dr. Swango was married January 25, 1899, to Miss Dora Summers Crain, a daughter of William and Emily (Ingram) Crain and also a native of Wolfe county. Dr. and Mrs. Swango have become the parents of a daughter, Evelyn, who was born in Jackson, March 21, 1904. Prompted by the spirit of patriotism, Dr. Swango stepped forth for national service at the time of his country's need and on August 27, 1917, was commissioned a first lieutenant in the medical corps of the United States army. He was sent to Fort Riley, Kansas, and from there to Camp Funston, in the same state, afterward going to Camp Custer, Michigan. He was also stationed at Camp Beauregard in Louisiana and on December 6, 1918, was honorably discharged. He is connected with the Knights of Pythias and casts his ballot for the candidates of the democratic party. He is a member of the Breathitt County and Kentucky State Medical Societies and the American Medical Association. Dr. Swango is deeply interested in the scientific and humanitarian phases of his work, and his professional colleagues as well as the general public speak of him in terms of high regard, for his life has been upright and useful. JAMES MARSHALL COLLINS James Marshall Collins, of Maysville, has been actively engaged in law practice for nearly three decades and enjoys an enviable and well deserved reputation as one of the leading representatives of his profession in Mason county. He was born at Mill Creek, Mason county, Kentucky, on the 11th of May, 1867, his parents being John and Hannah (Glenn) Collins, both of whom were natives of County Galway, [Image for History of Kentucky ] LaNoy "Tex" Collins golffer4@mercury.net http://www.geocities.com/rainforest/3860/
