"They must have followed into the wilderness a mighty man in those days, the Reverend John COLLINS, a born Quaker destined to drive the first stakes of the Methodist church in the then Northwest Territory." He was born abt. 1769. Lived in Gloucester, NJ. He and those of his followers moved to Hamilton County, OH in 1802. His wife may have been Sarah BLACKMAN. He is related to the DUNNS. He had a relative named Mary BAILEY DUNN. Please, if you know anything, I'd love to hear it. John Collins was supposed to have been famous and I haven't found a thing yet! Thanks.
Just finished reading the book, "A Sketch of Sam Bass, the Bandit", originally written in 1880 by Charles L. Martin. Three of his partners in crime were Henry, Billie and Joel Collins. The book mentions at one point that Henry was at the house of a relative of his in Grayson County, visiting. This book was delightful in painting a picture of the time and area my other ancestors lived in Texas ans surrounding states. Of course, I wondered with every page if my Collins were related to these "boys". Although, I have no idea of relations to me, Henry, Billy and Joel would be my "Very Most Wanted Collins". My most elusive COLLINS is Absolom Paul COLLINS, born in 1878. We don't know where he was born or who his parents were. He married Olive Myrtle FISHER, born 21 APR 1887 in Guthrie Center, IA. I have a lot of information on the FISHER line. Absolom and Olive married on 25 DEC 1904 at Winchester, KS. Absolom, Olive and their six-month-old daughter, Irene, moved by covered wagon to western Kansas in May of 1906, where they homesteaded 15 miles northwest of Sharon Springs, Wallace Co., KS. They lived there until their children were grown and married. Then, in 1936 they moved to Idaho, where Absolom Paul COLLINS passed away in 1938. Olive Myrtle (FISHER) COLLINS then moved back to Kansas. We don't know where in Idaho Absolom Paul COLLINS lived or died or where he is buried. His name has variously been spelled Absolom, Absolam, Absolem, Absalam, etc. The LDS Family History Center shows him as being born in Guthrie Co., IA, but that information is in parenthesis, and I think that means an assumption was made about his place of birth because of the birthplace of his wife. Look familiar to anybody? Karen (McCann) Collins kcollin@cwix.com Homepage: http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Louvre/1852
Am searching for any information regarding Peter Collins was was born Oct 20, 1774, died Apris 2, 1846 and who married Susanna Meadors <?> who was born March 7, 1774 and died July 28, 1835 but I do not know where they were..
Hello everyone. I am new to the list and my Collins was, John Collins(1830-1865) who , according to the Jackson Co. Wv. 1860 census was born in Ohio. John married Lydia Martha(Mary) Bumgarner in 1855. I believe that even though John was born in Ohio, his family were in Smithsville Wv. I have been unable to find any info on him except a mention in the History of Ritchie Co. Wv., written by a Mrs. Lowther. It states a Manley, Phoebe, Chainey and a John Collins from Wirt Co. Wv. Mother was Mary Collins. There were 3 brothers who came to Harrison Co. Wv. and developed the Collins settlement. I believe my John may have been descended from them. 2 of the brothers were said to have gone to Ky. and one to Clinton Co. Ohio. Of course all this is speculative. I am surpried at how little info or none for that matter that l have been able to get on my John. I have reason to believe my Collins were part Native American(Mulungeon) and they would have kept this a secret, which makes my research that much harder. If anyone has any info to share, i would greatly appreciate it. Barbara Charles.
Fellow Collins Researchers: My most wanted Collins would be John W. Collins born 1797 va/tn died after 1870 census was taken in McDowell Co. WV. In the 1870 census he is shown with wife Mary "Polly" Roark Collins and three children Alfred b. 1853, Arnetta b. 1855, and Richard b. 1858, all born in Tazewell Co.Va. before it became McDowell Co. WV. John W. Collins was married a first time proven by a bible record of my great grandmother, wife of Richard ( above). In that record list children of John W. Collins as : John Jr, William, Cicil, Jacob, Benjamin, Margaret, Ira, Alfred, Arnetta, and Richard. I have found a record of John and Lydia TONER COLLINS marriage in Grainger Co. TN 1821. The bonds were signed by Griffin Collins whom most folks believe to be the father of this John. I believe that Griffin and Meredith Collins were brothers, or somehow related, and Griffin signed in place of Meredith. Meredith being the father of John W. Collins . I believe this to be one in the same JOHN and that Lydia was his first wife. On census records John and Lydia had the following children listed: John Jr. , William, Jacob, Benjamin, and Ira. There was no Cicil or Margaret but Cicil could have died an infant since I have found nothing on him to prove he lived to adulthood. Margaret Collins I have found married to a Riffe but can't prove it is the same Margaret. Needless to say the census comes close to a match with Grandma Fidella's bible . Can anybody out there help me with this sisuation? I would love to know for sure that I have the correct first wife. Am searching for Jemima Collins and her parents names. Jemima married Thomas Woodward ca. 1744 in Fairfax Co., VA. Jemima and Thomas Woodward were the parents of William, John, Rebecca and Nancy Woodward--there may have been other children that I have not named. Jemima died before Thomas Woodward moved to South Carolina--her date of death is not known to me. Any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Joyce
