    1. Mission Impossible - Minerva Collins
    2. This mission, should you choose to be a part, is to find the family of Minerva Collins. She was born about 1824 in NC, possibly Caswell Co. She married George Washington Ward (who doesn't have at least 3 of these in their tree!) about 1836 probably in NC, or possibly in Fayette Co., TN. Thanks to a wonderful census taker I have state AND COUNTY of birth for their children. They were: William W/N Ward b.c 1837 Fayette Co.,TN m. Louisiana Compton 6 Dec 1869 Rhea Co., TN John Henry Ward b. 22 Mar 1840 Rockingham Co., NC m. Lydia Knox and died Rhea Co., TN Iverson M. Ward b. c 1847 Rockingham Co., NC Emily/Emilie J Ward b. c 1850 Guilford Co., NC Alvis Green Ward b. c 1852 Guilford Co., NC m. Martha (Mattie) Duncan Clorinda Ward b. c 1858 prob. Rhea Co., NC m. Samuel Miller 1877 Rhea Co., NC George died after 1880 and the family story says that Minerva left her children in TN and went back to NC to live with her parents and care for them. Doesn't anyone have a Minerva WARD living with their COLLINS ancestors, a mysterious woman in the household you have been unable to identify, the person who inherited the family farm, or the spinning wheel? I'm sure this message will self-destruct after the appointed amount of time. In the meantime I will surely appreciate your help. Ida

    3. Hello to everyone, I hope that you had a very nice Thanksgiving. I am new to the Collins-L and am very much hoping that someone can help me find my GGGgrandfather, Thompson Collins. Thompson was born abt 1785. I don't know if he was born in the states or migrated, but he made purchases of land in Buncombe Co, NC area before 1810. Thompson married Celia Self who was born in NC. Thompson and Celia moved to Habersham Co, GA, in the 1820's then to Union Co, GA, in the 1830's where they lived the remainder of their lives, Thompson dying abt 1858, and Celia abt 1880. Thompson Collins has eluded researchers for years but with the all the online researchers, I am hoping that some trace of him can be found so as to place him with his rightful parents. Thompson and Celia were parents of the following children: Archibald b. 1811, NC m. Mary Nix Sarah b. 1812, NC m. Jarrett Turner Elizabeth b. 1814, NC m. James Nix Francis b. 1816, NC m. Rutha Nix Thomspon "Thompie" b. 1818, NC, m. Sarah Ingram Ruth b. 1820, NC, m. Jacob Butt Celia b. 1826, GA, m. James West Nancy b. 1829, GA, m. John Combs Hayes Souther Olive b. 1831, GA Ivan Kimsey b. 1835, GA Thank you very much for your time and attention. 1. Johnie Collins
    2. Hello, I am seeking information about my grandfather, Johnie Collins. Johnie was born in Clay County, Kentucky on January 8, 1876, and died there October 25, 1943. After eighteen years, I now have the names of his parents. Edd Hensley and Margaret Collins. I don't think that Edd and Margaret were married. Johnie was married (maybe) to Rachael Gray of Clay County, Kentucky. They had several children. Their oldest son, Cicero Collins, born 1901, is my father. At the time of his death, Johnie is listed as being married to Nancy Ann Sizemore Collins. It's the first I've heard of her. I would greatly appreciate any information about Johnie, his mother Margaret, his father Edd Hensley; anything about any of these people. Thanks so much. Robin Collins

    2. Jo Douglas
    3. Hi List Members, I have only just subscribed to this list and I would love to add details of my GGGrandfather, Joseph COLLINS. Joseph was born circa 1810 in Timsbury, Hampshire, the son of Charles COLLINS and Elizabeth BELL (who were married 1809 in Timsbury). I know nothing of any siblings to Joseph. Charles COLLINS was the son of Robert and Elizabeth COLLINS. Charles also had a sister, Charlotte. Joseph was convicted of a crime and transported to Australia in 1828, aboard the 'Royal George'. After completion of his sentence he married Ellen Eliza WOODS and settled in the Shoalhaven district of NSW, Australia. Joseph and Ellen COLLINS raised 13 children. Rather than write details of each child, I will be more than happy to supply these details and any other information to anyone who believes they may have a connection. Please email me. Thankyou Joanne Douglas Victoria, Australia

H.R. 2589, the House version of copyright term extension and now named, "The Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act," was adopted by the full House or Representatives on March 25, 1998. The bill was sent to the Senate, where it languished for some time. In September the Senate passed a slightly different bill. The two bodies then worked out a compromise document. The House and the Senate passed S. 505 on October 7, 1998. President Clinton signed the bill on October 27, 1998. Per our Constitution, our government, "to promote the science and useful arts" ... secures "for limited times to authors and inventors the exclusive right to their respective writings and discoveries." This balances the right of a person to make a profit, with the right of the people to the work (so they can freely make derivative works). Until 1979, the copyright term was 56 years: one 28 year term, extendible for an additional 28 years. Hence, in 1978 all works created in or before 1922 were in the public domain. In 1979, Congress RETROACTIVELY extended copyright terms 19 years, so that the material from 1923 has never entered the public domain. Now, 19 years later, at the urging of the Walt Disney Company, the Gershwin heirs, and many others concerned with their rights to keep exclusive ownership of intellectual property, Congress has RETROACTIVELY extended copyright terms another 20 years, to 95 years. This means that materials written in 1923, which would have entered the public domain on Jan. 1, 1999, will now enter the public domain on Jan 1, 2019. Materials written in 1924 will now enter the public domain on Jan. 1, 2020. And that, sir, is only if Congress does not retroactively extend the term a third time. What impact does this have on genealogists? We all want information. In this day and age, information usually is found online or on CD-ROM disks. Yet the people who produce those online databases and CD-ROM disks are now prohibited from reproducing materials printed after 1922. Newspapers after 1922 (obituaries, especially) will now be in copyright for another 20 years. You'll need to wait 20 more years before they can be transcribed and put online for free. Old genealogies, which might be useful if reprinted, cannot be freely reprinted or placed online for an additional 20 years. Historical materials cannot be reprinted or placed online for an additional 20 years. Likewise, obscure works whose copyright status is uncertain or where the heirs cannot be tracked down, cannot be placed online for an additional 20 years. For a much more detailed description of the impact, look at: http://www.public.asu.edu/~dkarjala/ My thanks to Richard J. Yanco for his update on the issue. He was quite helpful in describing the legal language of the bill to me. 1. fzip family tree
    2. Laura Knight-Jadczyk
    3. I was asked about a program that I mentioned, and I forgot who asked, so will send reply to all... It is called fzip family tree and it is TONS easier to use than either Familytreemaker by Broderbund or Cumberland Family tree... it displays four generations onscreen at once, prints very nice reports, is easy to edit or change or connect or disconnect lines... all kinds of handy little things... just doesn't have the online capabilities of FTW, which also has some serious drawbacks in my opinion. Anyway, you can download a shareware version of this one from the guy's website at: http://www.ozemail.com.au/~acroft and you can register it for 35 bucks or so and then it will do everything! I use it for daily work because it is so easy. But, to get the tree on the internet, I just make it a gedcom then open it in FTW and upload from there. Laura Knight-Jadczyk
