Hello. I'm Sherry. I'm new to computers and newer still to genealogy on computers, and have some research accomplished, but still have a ways to go. Hope we can help each other. My great-grandfather was John William Collins. He was supposed to have fought in the Civil War at a very young age; He passed away at the age of 96 at his daughter's (my grandmother, Esther May "Stella" Cross) home about Nov. 20, 1935. Two other daughter's that I know of at this time: was Mrs. Rosa Tharp of Tulsa & Mrs. Anna Allen, Berryville, Ark.; three sons: Will Collins of Bronson, KS, Tom Collins of Hockerville and Charles Collins of St. Louis. My grandmother's home was in Picher, OK. My great-grandfather was buried in Miami, OK G.A.R. cemetary. His wife's name was Debra Ann Alberta Josephine Belcher Collins. . I have some wives, children in connection. I would like to hear from anyone who thinks there may be a connection. I'll be glad to add what information I have. Hope this helps us both. Thanks for your time. skisling@janics.com
Does anyone have any information on a Dr. J. Lloyd Collins (J. is either James or John - I have both) who practiced in Washington, D.C. for several years. I know he was practicing in the 1950's when his wife Verle died. He is still licensed in D.C. I also know that he had a son J. Lloyd Collins who lived in Camargo, OK during this same time period. Any help would be greatly appreciated! This may be the only living link I have to my father's family. Thanks, Kim Hoffman

I'm writing in regard to a couple of messages that have appeared on the list recently. The first, which appeared on October 28, listed James Collins, who married Mary Doolin in 1802 in Clark Co., KY, and appears in the 1850 Knox Co., IL, census, as a "most wanted." I suspect that my great-great-grandfather Albert G. Collins was James and Mary's son. He was born in KY in 1803, and although I don't know that he was born in Clark Co., he was married there, in 1831. Some circumstantial evidence of his being James and Mary's son is that he named his oldest son James - and that, according to the October 28 query, James and Mary's daughter Tabitha apparently had a son named Albert (perhaps named for her brother). Albert G. Collins and his wife, Permelia (Foster) Collins, moved to Missouri in 1838, then eventually - in 1845 or 1846 - became two of the earliest settlers of Dallas, Texas. Tragically, three of their sons - Joel, Billy, and Henry - were killed because of involvement with the Sam Bass gang (although it's not clear that Henry was guilty of any crime). (A query on October 27 mentioned these three brothers as "most wanted" - an unfortunately apt term in this context!) Other sons - James, Joseph (my great-grandfather), and John Foster - were apparently quite respectable. Albert G. Collins died in 1888 or 1889. I'm interested in information that would further link Albert G. Collins to the James Collins mentioned in the earlier query - or that would identify any of his siblings. John Glenn

I just received this and thought some of you who are looking for city directories would be interested. CITY DIRECTORIES ONLINE <<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>><<<>>> ======================================================= Primary Source Media has launched a new site with City Directories online. There are currently directories for 99 cities for the year of 1859, with plans to add more cities periodically, beginning in January 1999. The database "offers full-text searchability, making it possible for the user to search city directories using any word or string of words. For example, you can enter a last name, address, occupation, cultural or business institution, and do a search across the entire database or on a single directory. In addition, you can view full facsimile images of each directory page, providing convenience, speed, and authenticity. Advertisements and city maps are also searchable - an important consideration for art and social historians as well as students of advertising and consumerism." Although results for most of the cities can only be viewed by subscribers, Primary Source Media is offering free searches for Atlanta, Chicago, Galveston, Philadelphia, New York City, and Sacramento. Primary Source Media is also offering free, 30-day trials of our Online Products to libraries that wish to test the full online databases. For more information, visit the Web site at: http://www.citydirectories.psmedia.com/ And for a great article on city directories, go to: "City Directories: A Forest of Family Trees" by Leslie Corn (A Professional Genealogist and Consultant at the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society) http://www.citydirectories.psmedia.com/city/essay_main1.html Ancestry.com subscribers already have access to the following directories. Look for more in the near future as Ancestry is currently working on adding several more of these valuable resources. Well, here is my wish list and what I DO have about it... Would dearly love to find this Enoch Collins who married Fatima Knight... Their granddaughter, Martha Ann, married her second cousin, the son of the brother of Fatima. All this was going on in Georgia, and I have the Knights tracked back to 1325, so it is pretty frustrating to not have something on my Collins or Granthams... I also have the Roberts family back to the Revolution, and the Meadows family back to the 1600s... Can anybody help? I am seeking information on James Collins and his wife Helen Kelly. They are said to have come from county Claire, Ireland, and settled in Buffalo in the early 1880's. They lived in the First Ward and attended St Brigids. I have located three of their children in the St. Brigids baptismal records and Helen and her surviving children in the 1892 census in Buffalo. No further trace of any of them until the 1920 census in Buffalo and Niagara Falls. The children are: * Catherine Collins born about 1878 * Charles born about 1880 * Mary born 1882 * Jane "Jennie" born 1885 * Helen born 1887 * Margaret born 1889 Related families are BRILL (Jane), HALL (Margaret), HUGHES (Mary), and THOMPSON (Catherine). Thanks. David Cornell
Hi all: I paid a visit to the National Archives Mid-Atlantic branch on Friday and came back with some interesting records on a few of the Collins of VA that fought in the Revolution. I suspect that several of these folks might be brothers of my Robert Collins, so if anyone makes a connection, please let me know. This info was taken from an index to the muster rolls. As usual, this was what I found right at closing, so I didn't get a chance to actually look at the muster rolls themselves for further info. Hope these tidbits help someone. Robert Collins (not mine) was a fifer in Livingston's Batallion of the Contential Troops. Robert Collins (again not mine) was a Dragoon/Private in the 4th Regiment of the Light Dragoons Continential Troops. Robert Collins (THIS one is mine) Private in the 8th VA Regiment Peter Collins - served in 8th, 4th and 12th VA Regiment as well as the Corps of the Invalids John Collins was a Private in the 4, 8, and 12th VA Regiments Charles Collins served in 8th VA regiment James Collins served in 4, 8, and 12th VA Regiments. I suspect that all these Collins in the 4, 8 and 12th VA were related, but maybe it was just a coincindece. Let me know if there are any matches. Thanks -- Ann

hihi all, It's been a while since I posted my family information, so here it is again, slim though it may be. I am searching for John Robert Collins, born between 1830 - 1860 either in Virgnia or Ohio, married to Rebecca Middleton (no known information about her at this time.) Their children were: Frances W. (dau) Martha "Matt" (dau) Belle (dau) Arthelia (dau) Xeia (dau) Fannie (dau) Nancy (dau) Robert (son) Roy (son) Freddie (son) Russel (son) Clifford (son) Charlie (son) John (son) Frances married Charles Taylor Tarpenning and had three children, Helen Leona, b. Feb 23, 1895 in Springfield, Ohio, Mae, and Richard. This branch of Collins has Indian or Melugeon ancestors according to my grandmother. So, does this ring any bells or make any connections?
