?Mye Goodye Cosynes !!! I am new to the BACON list. I do not know the latest status for Bramford lines as such. Maybe someone could give me a quick run down. I have been looking at this Bacon for two days or so. http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/BACON/2001-06/0991689875 http://www.selectsurnames.com/bacon.html If we go to a map first, about 8 kms S. of Ipswich is Woolverstone [Lydia Ward who m. William Markham who had sons William Markham b:1621 and of Hadley NE, and also Samuel Markham (died?)], then about 6 kms SW of Ipswich is Copdock, W. of Copdock is Chattisham, above NW. of Chattisham is Hintlesham, between Hintlesham to Ipswich is Sproughton, and 3 kms NW. of Ipswich is Bramford. The person I am concerned with is Andrew Bacon of Bramford Suffolk who comes out to NE 1635, one of the first settlers of Middletown CT, and his nephew Nathaniel Bacon comes to and lands up in Hartford CT. It seems all of Nathaniel Bacon's children m. into the Wetmore/Whitmore family. Uncle Andrew Bacon is the son of Thomas Bacon of Bramford Suffolk. There is a will for him and his son Thomas it seems. >From what I can see so far, this line of Bacon is more centred in and around towns about and in Ipswich rather than from Stretton. There are several Nathaniel Bacons all around. This Nathaniel Bacon would have m. Anne Miller. That should be the correct marriage and persons in question here. In Earls Colne Essex, the James + Abraham Markham living there: They are more than likely brothers, but was it Abraham Markham who connects to one Hitchcock in Earls Colne ?. The surname of Hitchcock is also found in Bramford too. The Collins (Collens) family in question is from Bramford. Martha Collins who m. James Markham of EC should be a (great) grand dg of the John Collens 'Sailcloth Maker' of Bramford who m. three times, and I think he was buried 1594 in Bramford. By say about 1598, his widow Abigail (Rose) Collins (buried in Braintree Essex near Earls Colne) and two known sons usually mentioned together, being John Collins and Daniel Collins (Merchant of London). This son John Collins will be the father of Martha Collins ('Goodwife' Markham) of Earls Colne, and should also have another dg named Sibel Colenes living in London who m. Mr. (Henry ?) Linch. There is only one Sibbel Colenes in all the London records I can find, and she is the dg of one John Collins. That is her, in the right place too. I have not read the Bacon archives at all. I suppose you know about it ?. The known Nathaniel Bacons from Bramford to Ipswich area: It seems Andrew Bacon has a brother Nathaniel Bacon who has a son Nathaniel Bacon. === 1645: Matthew Hopkins. Robert Hitchcock a watcher at Copdock, Chattisham, Hintlesham. Mary Skipper implicated by Nathaniel Bacon of Chattisham. Matthew Hopkins met at Chattisham Nathaniel + Mary Bacon. Confessed to a Watcher. Basic Quote: "Another Nathaniel Bacon from Bramford possibly Nathaniel Bacon's son, fled EN to CT soon after". === One Matthew Hopkins is a 'Watcher' or 'Witch Finder'. He's going around checking people out and watching people from a distance to see if they are into superstitious practices. An 'imp' seems to be a 'winged demon'. Now this Bacon family in general seems to be high standing. I am thinking it must be this Nathaniel Bacon of Chattisham, one town away, who is probably the father of this Nathaniel Bacon who goes to NE ?. So I can only suspect that the father and mother [Nathaniel + Mary Bacon] were hauled off and maybe not heard of again or so. This would leave the son Nathaniel Bacon to his relatives. I will send the book page ref. when I can find it again. This Anne Miller wife will be a very close relative it seems of Nathaniel Bacon (son). This Miller family must be previously and closely related it seems so far. Very close. Short Note: Bramford Suffolk I think is the place quite well noted for the scary. I think it is here one of Alfred Hitchcock's stories? were filmed, ''Rosemary's Child'' was it ?. http://books.google.co.za/books?id=pzAwAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA33&lpg=PA33&dq=Nathaniel+Bacon+Connecticut&source=bl&ots=8XDSKmEq_w&sig=hd1qGr2IsierRvHf2SgZAODi284&hl=en&ei=rHanTI2hB8ucOtvkkbkM&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=9&ved=0CC0Q6AEwCDge#v=onepage&q=Nathaniel%20Bacon%20Connecticut&f=false So this Nathaniel Bacon the son is ''of Bramford'', where his father's brother Andrew Bacon resides. He must go to New England with his uncle Andrew Bacon, and this Bacon family would obviously be known to the Collins family of Bramford which is small enough place as it is. I need to come back to this point, but the Bacon of Stretton must be related to this Bacon of Bramford, it is only the parentage of this Nathaniel Bacon son that is in question. The Nathaniel Bacon from Bramford (son) is probably the one shown in the above reference ?. I 'think' this is a list of 'householders' in Middletown CT in 1670, which would make this Nathaniel Bacon born about 1629, since he died 1706 aet 77 yrs. It means he would have only been about 5-6 years old when his parents were taken away from him and/or the time he came to NE. Several of this Collins family were born in Bramford too. And there you can see the direct descents being Nathaniel Collins and Samuel Collins. They are related to Edward Collins there, who is the uncle of Daniel Markham (and probably the Nathaniel Markham who died in his house there, son of Abraham Markham of Earls Colne), where Daniel Markham is the son of James and Martha (Collins) Markham of Earls Colne Essex England. You can also see the name of Thomas Miller, a relative of this Nathaniel Bacon. Is he the father of this Nathaniel Bacon's wife ?. That Edward Foster might relate too, and also that Edward Turner. So this seems to be a Bramford Bacon family coming in here (!!!). That Samuel White 'might' also connect to White of Bramford somehow. I don't know all these trees. The other Nathaniel Bacon around Ipswich Suffolk is the ''Recorder of Ipswich'', and he must undoubtedly be related to this same family from Bramford Suffolk it seems. There is whole story of a change of land in Bramford connecting to this Bacon family, this can be sought further to one Gertrude Bacon whose attorney is John Curtis. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/records.aspx?cat=173-ha61&cid=-1 <<< [Note]: Collins - Acton - Eldred. >>>: That Wm. Whitmore is more than likely the same family to the Whitmore of New England etc. That [Wm. Borlas, Esq. of Bockmore in Medmenham, Bucks.] is also the same person dealing with land sales to the Collins family there. John Carter is the 'Clerk', but also the clergy figure in Bramford, who is directly and closely related to the one John Acton there via Bezaleel Carter 'Clerk'. John Acton and Gertrude Courthois. [To John Acton, Esq. of Bramford and Edward Shepperd, gent. of Ipswich and Thos. Goodall, gent. of Barnards Inn property in Bramford with covenant of Gertrude and Barbara Courthois promising to convey same to Edward Shepperd and Thos. Goodall for purpose of common recovery by John Acton. Marked on back: "Where John Cutting now lives 1758]. [Mortgaged by Courtois 1662 and descended to Gertrude and Barbara Courthois who sold to John Acton]. ==== [1653 Memorandum of agreement between Nathaniel Bacon (Recorder of Ipswich) and John Curtis On appointment of a ...]: This should be the same Curtis family etc. === OK, I think I found it. You can read before and after this page: http://books.google.co.za/books?id=B5Yl4DiTo9MC&pg=PA100&dq=Nathaniel+Bacon+Bramford&hl=en&ei=Um2nTLrDC82TjAeb3MzJDA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=5&ved=0CDsQ6AEwBA#v=onepage&q=Nathaniel%20Bacon%20Bramford&f=false === I think what might have happened here, is that a high standing family has like one brother who dabbled a bit. The 'Watcher' was like 'Watching', a confession, and after that I don't yet like know. This info seems to make a lot of sense though. The Deacon Daniel Markham of New England is a wall that needs to be chipped away slowly. I would add this piece of info to the Top 10 items for further review to see if it is or is not: [m:08-11-1664: John Markham of Ipswich, sailor, widower, and Mary Baily of the same, widow.]. I would suspect that here must be some maritime connection to this line of Markham at least via sailors [Not NL lines !!!]. There is an entire realm of associated families being connected to Aldermen and Mayors of London, Ipswich area and Norfolk etc. === The one Thomas Bacon of Bramford had lands there ''inter-mingled'' with other lands, and so some latter ''trespass'' records might have come about. [Maybe a 'No Entry' sing on his front gate ?]. http://books.google.co.za/books?id=ldJMtRTV9ZgC&pg=PA237&dq=Matthew+Hopkins+witch+finder&hl=en&ei=2L2nTOe1BtjPjAfH18TDDA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=8&ved=0CFkQ6AEwBw#v=onepage&q=Matthew%20Hopkins%20witch%20finder&f=false Macfarlane (Allan ?): Only 23 out of 291 persons accused of witchcraft were males, 92% were females. === - S.K.M. - [!!!] ============================
My Collins family lived in Quebec, starting in 1795. But they had come to West Brome, Quebec from Vermont>New Hampshire>Massachusetts. These two brothers were descendants of "Henry the Starchmaker" Collins of Lynn, Mass. The two who migrated to Brome in 1795 were Henry Collins and Ebenezer Collins, both US veterans of the Revolutionary War (not Tories). Henry was the first settler in West Brome, and there is today a large "COLLINS" stone erected on the original cabin site by the Brome County Historical Society in 1895. (we drove up to visit this stone in 2001). They remained in Canada for 20 or 30 or so years, having many children there. Some children stayed behind - some serving in the Candian armed forces. Both brothers returned to the US by 1840, both moving to the Chicago area. (Henry to Lake County @ north end of Chicago, and Ebenezer to Will County near Joliet). Could your Charles Collins be a descendant of one of these brothers? Warren Collins sounds like he could be a grandson of one of these men. Still trying to connect our James Collins, b. abt 1847, d. 1898, married Sarah Ellen Wall/Walls in 1864 in Grainger County, Tennessee..moved to KY. Have received 67 DNA matches, but no definite connection. Thinking perhaps he may link to Benjamin Collins.....anyone researching Benjamin Collins in TN? Betty
MGC: There is a whole circle of related families joining up over and over and between each other for this DDM research. You will start to find the pattern and some truly amazing marriages that will start to show good patterns for possible Markham links etc. These are just hand-picked items and an incomplete list. I would like to give out another 2-3 lists for the other sites I mentioned previously. I have also added a few other surnames for fun. Not all of these places are full of Markhams at all, but they are full full of related families, Nacton Suffolk is one of them. Add Nacton Suffolk to your list of places. You will just how much these families are connected, and for long too. I will comment later below on some of these marriages. Make sure to look on map where these places are, you will see the pattern there too. Woolverstone is just over the river there. There is some feeling that the William Markham (1621) of Haldey CT might eventually connect up with your DDM, but from maybe near line from that TL, but a separate line nonetheless, I can't say right now. Sometime soon, one would want to get a dna match from living persons. The Markham surname is also written slightly differently, I don't have it at hand right now. There is also a NL Markham line close by, and would need further review. MGC: Like the Noble Line of Markham, these Markhams were severely linked to certain several families like Strelley, Sutton, etc. Your Collins and DDM Markham families are the same for at least 1500 - 1800+, yes that far !!!. These families are still being extensively related back in Old England, as well as in New England, and then between. Markham is still aligning itself to these Collins and associated families in a big way. There is a large number of these important associated families here for what we are looking at, just a few here in no order: Cole, Haywood, Spink, Cotton, Turner, Prentice, Acton, Aldred (!!!), Ward, Porter (!!!), Wilson, Spark(e)s, Cripps, Graves (!!!), CLARKE CLARKE and CLARKE (!!!), King, Rose and Rose and Rose, Hales, Pierce, Moore, Smith, Stevens, Harrys, Bedel, Burde/Birde, Lanne, Stonard/Stonnard, Jackson, PORTER PORTER and PORTER (!!!), again, Webbe/Webber, Munnings, Alden, Bower, Allen, Mott, Swallow, Stebbing, Sheppard (!!!), Adams, HART(E) and HART(E) and HART(E), Cutting, Christmas, DANIEL/DANNEL, Lee, Wicks/Weeks, Wicke, LITTLE and LITTLE and LITTLE, DAY and GREENE (!!! !!! !!!), Reynolds, Browne, etc., to name a few. Also add SCARLETT, GRAY, BUTTON (!!! !!! !!!). Please make a list of these names and the ones I have pointed out from previous posts. Also a list for hotspot places. You won't be able to do these Markham and Collins trees without adding all of these families, once you do, you will start seeing the bigger picture I am seeing and find a lot more. At a glance, these Markhams of Marlesford + Campsey-Ash in Suffolk, could be yours. Nearby is also of note, Hacheston and Tunstall. Here I am giving out what would seem at first, the most excellent chance of one of your DDM surviving lines back in OE. I have only just noticed Hacheston and Tunstall is nearby. So it seems your line of DDM was using the A12 motorway quite a lot (?). http://www.phillipsplace.net/genealogy/ps02/ps02_424.html http://www.phillipsplace.net/genealogy/ps05/ps05_103.html [m:27-12-1738 William Clarke Elizabeth Spink Woolpit] As above: One must also add some hotspot places where there are few or no Markhams etc., since these places will hold much for related families and find some links of note, like this Clark - Spink marriage of huge note. Also: [William Spink m:12-11-1787 Elizabeth Marcom in Bardwell Suffolk] [Michael Spinke m:27-12-1663 Elizabeth Rose in Ipswich Suffolk] Correction to previous email: The Margaret Lan I spoke of is probably relating to the Lanne family instead. But my placement of that link remains unchanged. I would also currently say that the Markhams of Bardwell + Marlesford + Campsey-Ash Suffolk are clearly associated, and probably yours, until we know better. === Here is a trick to use a certain search engine: Go here: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountryEngland.htm#PageTitle Click on say Suffolk, then click on say Bardwell, M011943 (1651-1756), a new window will open up and in the top right field box the cursor should flash there or click once in the field box with your mouse. Don't type anything in, just press the Enter button once and leave it. The page will bring up all of the records '' ''it has'' '' for that location. It is this way you can get all the records for once church. but also see who else is there. It is this seeing who else is there that is making a huge difference. At the bottom of the page you can click on next to go to the next page etc. I go right through the whole lot picking out all of the immediate ones I can see. One will have to go back a few time to get more related surnames as they become known. Not all of the records are in, and then one can just go here to look further: http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp I am using this a lot to find glaring patterns. Also in the aforementioned field box, you can just the surname you require and it will in most cases bring up the soundex results for a surname given. At this point in time, I do not know if the MARKIN/MARKN surname will have any further bearing to this DDM lineage, but I follow the path I am on and wherever it will take me. There are way too many things for me to point them out individually, so I will take time to put out some posts of info I have. You will also notice the Graves family going to come in back in OE. The COPPING here might COPPIN, and I suspect in some cases COLLINS might in some few cases be spelt COLLING etc. But if you look further for each person in case, you will find a better spelling to use. The current spellings for the DDM line seem to be: MARKHAM - MARKAM - MARCOM in OE. I am clearly in the right place for associated families, it just remains to be seen if we have the correct dna Markhams. We need know Suffolk and London Markhams. North Ockenden is place we must still go ... ... ... - S.K.M. - [!!!] ==================
MGC: This post is [Pure Speculation]. My one intention is to put out some patterns to follow. I can't write every item I have written of before, like precise places etc., but one can go back on my previous emails on the Markham-UK list and get that info. I find it difficult going back on some things. Takes too long. It seems that a whole chunk of large numbers of related families hopped out of England into NE + VA etc. http://www.bowyerfamily.org/rose/1.htm http://www.bowyerfamily.org/rose/17.htm We know that Thomas Rose from Exmouth in Devon came to Suffolk to a place near Ipswich in Suffolk ?. It is here at Elmswell in Suffolk you might find one Robert Rose m. Margery. This line of Rose comes into Branford + Wethersfield CT NE. You can notice the huge naming pattern of the children of Robert Rose. I can only assume Thomas Rose and Robert Rose are of very near kinship !. Assuming that to be correct, let us take look further: We know the Collins family of Bramford Suffolk is where the contingent of Collins we are concerned with were mainly born, but, not really from there, only there by association with the Acton family etc. This Collins family is in London L1 area and EC and Braintree, etc., and the epicentre given out. We know of one William Markham of Bardwell Suffolk which is close to Bramford Suffolk. There are quite a number of associated surnames found here in Bardwell, that is for sure. I will give some of these out when I can get to it. We know that nearly every single person married a relative, and so there must be a link through families into Bardwell or any other place and connection etc. And so father or son or brother or daughter, or thereabouts, would often show a link back into another associated family etc. But this link would also include say the m. of a Collins family into another family, and then that family was closely linked to the m. family say wife of a Markham. So there will be this married link between two focal point surnames. Or more simply put, through families of related spouses etc. William Markham m. Mary Caston of Bardwell Suffolk had a dg Elizabeth Marcom m. William Spink(e). The Spin(c)k(e) family clearly has a contingent of Spink in Ipswich Suffolk. But not only that .... Super Ken Says: 'Let it be Remembered Forever that': [Michael Spinke m:27-12-1663 Elizabeth Rose St. Mary Stoke, Ipswich, Suffolk]. Markham - Spink - Rose - (Collins + Acton of Bramford). This [William Markham Shopkeeper in Bardwell Suffolk m. Mary Caston] actually goes into Bramford Suffolk (!!!). He also has a son John Markham m:03-11-1794 Susan Watson in Bardwell Suffolk. I have so far 12 children for this William Markham. This WM does not necessarily have to be one of the DDM lineages, but from the marriage side, he is related. This WM is also being sought for connection to: [Ancestor of Tasmanian Markhams is Robert Markham (born 1740s) lived in village of Shotley, Suffolk, England] if any ?. The interesting thing here, is the 100 year still related !. This is obviously worth following through.... The Spink family in Bardwell also m. into Barrell family, and the naming pattern is unreal. In Bardwell are families of: Goff, Baldero, Goslin (Josselin), Daniel, Day, Finch, Coppin, Aldred, etc. For DDM at least, make very good note of Day and Finch, it will form a good part of your tree eventually either ways. Also Harrison and Haywood, Wheeler, Meade. Parker, Stebbing, all round. - S.K.M. - [!!!] ========================
MGC: [Jeane daughter of Abrm Markham and Alice Markham christened 14.2.1636.]: This currently as I am seeing it and will need further review, probably the same person as [m:1665 Joan MARKHAM & Robert ADAMS N Ockenden]. You can put it in with a single [?] on the link. http://books.google.com/books?id=KO1ceziscVgC&pg=PA675&dq=abraham+markham+colchester&hl=en&ei=rbU_TJ6lB5aM4gaB3szCCg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CCkQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=abraham%20markham%20colchester&f=false http://seax.essexcc.gov.uk/result_details.asp?intOffSet=20&intThisRecordsOffSet=21 In and around EC and this area of research, there is going to be several NL Markham associated family names coming in it seems like Mortimer for instance, Saville, Neville, these are extensions of these families that have not been researched much yet at all. You can notice the m. of Elizabeth Franklyn of Middsx (Probably London) to John Cressener (1653-1715). This would be part of the Francklyn families of London no doubt. You can see the one link of Cressener to Russell to N. Ockenden and Earls Colne etc. So this Cressener should be related to the Collens family of London near Daniel Collins merchant of London via the Francklyn marriage there etc. The more I get into this saga, the : [m1:1603 John MARCUM & Elizabeth HARRIS Gt Burstead] [m2:1614 John MARCUMS & Alise LITTLE Gt Burstead] ... looks like it is going to connect up. They will be closely at the very least via Collins for one. I have already given out the epicentre for your Collins tree around Beauchamp Roding and Chickney etc. Here is one start to connect to this Little family in Gt. Burstead where several other related families will be found like Mott etc. [James Collin of Chickney hall in com. Essex m. Sarah da. of Jeffrey Little of Levenhall in com. Suff.]. Under 'Meade' should be your Collins: http://books.google.com/books?id=z0pbAAAAQAAJ&pg=PA23&dq=Henry+Collin+Chickney+Hall&hl=en&ei=m7xATI7AKdHB4gb0yb2-Dg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=3&ved=0CDEQ6AEwAg#v=onepage&q=Henry%20Collin%20Chickney%20Hall&f=false http://seax.essexcc.gov.uk/%5CViewCatalogue.asp?ID=152511 [18-01-1669: James Collin of Chickney s.& h. of James Collin s.& h. of John Collin s.& h. of Henry Collin. It seems the patterns are repeating themselves all over. There are a lot of associated families here that is for sure in Bardwell. We must maybe include the MARKHAM-CASTON connection too, there is great chance this might be a surviving line of DDM'ers (!!!): http://www.wedmore.org.uk/puckle/Merchant3.pdf This Calthorpe connection would mean the DDM line would possibly be directly related to the MARCON/MARKHAM lines of Norwich (!!!). This would be part of the same Booty family coming into Bardwell I assume. You can get the rest of the items from reading the chapter 3. Puckle - Calthorpe - Rich(es) - Booty - Parmenter of close association here (!!!). Great connections to Yarmouth too. William Corbet lives in Broad Street London. Walter Bening. East Markham, curiously, is just part of the pattern. This 'Day' family is connected too, also: King(e), Swallow (?), Garret, Long, Smith, Man, Prentice, Toft, Hayns, Palgrave, Turner, Puckle, etc. The military aspect is missing etc. This 'Church' family of EC just about that's all. I 'think' it was Roger Harlakenden who was involved with the 'Horse' in Yorks or thereabouts etc. Up thaddaways anyways. [Richard Harlackenden, William Harlackenden, Barnard Church, William Barnham, John Mann, Thomas Toft, Samuel Puckle]. Looking at the 4Acts, the theme runs as raising money, fighting, and then the settling of the military. It might be under the last clause? that you more than likely find the Col. Edm. Markham who comes back to Earls Colne and lives with Abraham Markham and EM dies not too long after. Bardwell is certainly one excellent choice for a connection to a DDM lineage back in England to pursue further. It has the Booty name and also goes back into Bramford too. Bardwell at the very least, has quite a number of associated families living there. This line of Markham of Bardwell either is or isn't. Maybe US researchers can look into it further.... Problems with DDM research: I do not know what surname I am under as yet, but: Markham - Markam - Marcum - Marcom - Marke. Nearly all of these people are excessively of near kin. Daniel Markham of EC would more than likely come out to NE with his uncle Edward Collins who would have had his own ship at least, and was a merchant. Surname Scarlett too. And so on .... - S.K.M. - [!!!] ==================
MGC: [Speculative Post]: I want to go into my next phase of this search for Markham. I am waiting to see which is the next list I am going to join up on. It should be Prentice at least. +R- you might want be on the MARKHAM-UK list if not already to follow posts I won't be sending to this list. Follow me wherever I go. To DDM'ers, make sure to keep this page for Prentice etc. http://www.prenticenet.com/news/2001/henry_prentice_wigenhall_england.htm [m:1668 Elizabeth MARKHAM & Daniel YEOMAN Gt Totham]. Here I clearly do not know at all just yet, but ... ... I am going to place this one as ''probably'' the same person as the dg of Abraham? Markham of Earls Colne (EC) with a full [???] on the link. The Prentice family is clearly connected to Great Totham in Essex, and for some time it seems. Elizabeth Markham would be going there more than likely via a Prentice family connection. We will be going into whole sets of completely different name patterns compared to the NL Markhams lines. These would eventually become the standard naming patterns and one would get used to them like old hat, one day ... This connection here looks about right. TL is perfect. I suspect the url for Prentice family is going to be the correct Prentice dna family line so far. We will find that in the region of grandchildren still being closely connected to grandchildren from another line etc. This would be close for it to be like that. Close family ties. Nothing unusual about that I suppose. In the last week I have put out that the names of Valentine - Daniel - Clement - even Nicholas and Susan, are fine for this arena. There was a Bishop Valentine I think. Here we go: Abraham Markham m. Alice Turner [EC], her father was Clement Turner [EC], her sister Elizabeth Turner [EC] and ET m. John Prentice. John Prentice's parents are Valentine Prentis of [Felstead Essex] b:1561 and d:1605 and his wife is Marie Luke of [Felstead Essex] m:15-01-1585 at [Felstead, Essex, England] it seems. This [Valentine Prentis 1561] dies in 1605. His father is given to be [John Prentis b:1540 d:1597] + mother [Elizabeth Harrod]. This [Valentine Prentis 1561] has THE son [Valentine Prentis b:02-1598/9 d:1633] who m. [Alice Bredda]. [Valentine Prentis b:02-1598/9 d:1633] dies in 1633 in [Roxbury MA]. [!!!]. [Valentine Prentis 1561] + [Elizabeth Harrod] also have a son [Daniell Prentice of Felstead Essex]. You can look the rest up etc. and so on.... For this Prentice family any connection to Great Totham would be huge (!!!). === For now, using this Prentice tree, one can make maybe as a focal starting point like Collens tree, to [Wigenhall Norfolk] which is near King's Lynn. The immediate Prentice line is in Felstead Essex. I do not know the exact primary record, but the [Francis Prentice Felstead Essex b:05-1605] is either in the correct place or dg of the son John Prentice ?. [John Prentis] the elder d:1597 it seems, so she would then be dg of JP the Jnr ?. I don't know to what extent this will apply further here just yet, if the case at all ?. This Collens and Markham and Prentice trees will have these far apart naming marriage connections at first it seems. There is also a large Bacon-Ward connection it seems about this TL. At this TL, the Prentice family is going into London, and to Collens and Prentice and even Buntinge to Earls Colne etc. Remember Buntinge a bit too... [21-06-1635: Clement Prentice of Stoke Ash Suffolk, yeoman, to Richard Pretyman of Narford, Gent., on property in Stoke Ash, Braiseworth and Thornham in Suffolk.] http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=REG&db=hendersonscholes&id=I20780 With these Valentine Prentiss you with also find a connection to Black Notley a huge Collens domain. Or thereabouts .... [Exception Note]: There has to be a much greater all round connections to CLARK (!!! !!! !!!) etc. === Title: ''Who killed Who, and let that be the Question'', or alternatively placed as, ''A Day in the Life of John Collens'': [Specs]: I must just end off by saying the following: I still feel the need to come back here again. I gave the texts out in my last posts. >From here immediate, I need to go back and check my notes: I did say that the John Collens Goldsmith of London had a son John Collens (!!!). After reading this again (and again !!!), this [John Collyns] living 1564 and son of ['Thomas Collins his father'], and of great note, ['of Braintree'], already, ... , quite probably sways to the Thomas Collins Alderman of London near in actually in Old Broad Street etc. Cheers - S.K.M. - [!!!] ===================
MGC: The realization of Drake will have quite some impact on the area of this tree no doubt. +-R your tree is going to be very high in stature, and one must consider Bishops, several of them, associations to even Presidents, Drake (!!!), place of Padua, surgeons, several Bishops came from the weaving industry etc., waterways into inland England, and all the way up those rivers, like London, Earls Colne, up by Yarmouth, Devon, Somerset, Ipswich, Colchester, etc. I am going to place names of note like this one to be noted: [Jennings!!!]. This [Rich Haiward] of EC should relate to the one [Haiwood] in Colchester: [1713 Elizabeth MARKHAM & Edward HAIWOOD Colchester All Saints]. This possibly means that there is at least one surviving DDM line coming out from Colchester to after 1700. Dale, Artes, the World: I need to know who this Elizabeth Markham is (!!!). I can now see a clear connection of several families to Devon (!!!). A lot of people here in EC have become extremely closely related and to DDM lines. [Rich Hayward, [EC] m. [Tabitha Maninge]. This surname will equate to [Mannings] or similar, which is also Drake related and will include [Robert Muninges of Hethersett Norfolk]. [Jn Pennifather deceased Joan Adams his daughter wife of Wm Adams vicar of Earls Colne is his executrix]. To DDMers: You will seriously want to start adding all of the associated families to any surname around the Abrm Markham of EC, i.e., Prentice, Adhams, Andrews, Potter, Turner, Heywood, Abbott, Bowles, every Collins, Martin, Harris(son), Litle, Man, Hatch, Allen, Cook, Jennings, Smith, etc. I can't name them all. It is said that Captain Thomas Cook was probably b. in Earls Colne. This Hatch family of EC will be related to he DDM line via m. This Allen family is a truly large family to follow that is clear. Your DDM is probably related to Harlakenden in several close marriage ties. One must clearly note what is on this 'Diary of RJ' website. Several of these families will connect to Devon around place names I have already given out. This is not a small tree, it is huge with many many branches to follow. Wods !!!. *** ***: You might recall one side note of mine: [Edward Collins of Medford, attorney of Miss Mary Cooke of the Parish of Martins-in-the-Fields, to John Rolph (Rolfe) of Nantucket Island.]. Not sure, but she might be the wife of [Samuel Annesley, Esq. of Westminster] who was [1662: Ejected from St. Giles, the Foes follow him out of Anglican church to become a non-conformer]. There seems to be this Cook - Wilcox - Briggs - Cory connections. The [Parker] family of EC must connect I suppose too. Possibly for Thomas Markham lineage: It can be noted that the Greenleaf family coming into NE in MA is from one Edmund Greenleaf from Devon. They connect to the Gookin? family there too. The Greenleaf family is also supposed to be in Colchester too, and possibly Ipswich ?. The Thomas Markham and Susan Greenleaf of VA was it ?, some mention of food for thought was that there might be some connection to John Rolf there (Woolf ?). The Greenleaf family, as one might expect now in this arena, is possibly from France. This surname ''might'' also be spelt ''Greenhough'' ?. From the St. Mary Woolnoth church in London register there is: [1609 May 6. John Greenehocke, of St. Margaret, New Fish Strete, and Johan Rolfe, of this Parish, servant to Mr. Herringhooke.] Here one John Greenleaf/Greenhough (?) m. Jane Rolfe in 1609. The TL is excellent for some further meaning. In the early 1600 and later on, French Huguenots came to England etc. Some notes: John Rolfe, Planter [Nantucket-Newberry-Camb-VA] m. Mary Scullard and had with others Rebecca Rolfe who d. in [Medford, MA]. http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/MARKHAM-UK/2009-01/1230863375 http://www.scribd.com/doc/28425271/Cooke-Genealogy Above: The very long Cook and Joslen connection etc. in London etc. This Sir Thomas Cook connects to Gidea Hall, and primary residence at St. Peter le Poer London (!!!). http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~albgenealogy/Wilcox/borpafg02.htm I do not know, but [Bayles] might be Bales, Upshaw might also be Upchur? back in England ?. This [Church] family of EC must be noted (!!!). Several persons of interest might be found in the 'Register of Scholars admitted to Colchester School' (?). The Goldsmiths of London in this L1 area must all be noted and listed. The John Collins Goldsmith of London should be yours +-R (!!!). He is yours. This ''Friday Street'' in London must be noted whenever you see it. It will have further meaning to your tree. I might be a church there, but also people living in that street to be noted further. We truly do require a proper list of all the mayors and aldermen of London, and the one to note as well, is one Sir Martin Bowes Alderman of London. The surname of Martin must be noted all round too. [1548: Pacyence, daughter of Martyn Bowes, son of the said Sir Martyn Bowes, Citizen & Goldsmythe of London.] The NL Markhams are not far away at all. He also m:1611 to Frances dg of Francis Gavell of Cobham Surrey and has issue, and also m1:abt1600 to Emme dg of Richard Turner of Tarvin in Chester and had issue. So JA had m3 and issue from each one. Blandina dg of John Penvin was also m. to Henry Skipwith. This John Acton is the son of Thomas Acton who m. Jane Pollor. Here is something interesting: This John Acton Goldsmith of London's parents are Thomas Acton and Jane Pollor [Merington Worcs], and his parents are William Francis Acton [Acton Hall Elmley] and Elizabeth Dudmasonn [Acton Hall Elmley], and his parents are William Acton [Acton Hall Elmley] and Freya Princess of the Swedes from Sweden. One item that caught my eye was one Mr. John Action a Military Colonist of Roanoke, an early arrival there for about one year about 1586-7 (?) or so. [Sp. 'ACTION']. You can read on it on the net. I clearly do not know if he an ACTON. But he is associated with Sir Francis Drake and possibly a Master of a ship ?. We can see that one line of Acton is very high stature. Not just that: John Drake of Winsdor: http://www.xroyvision.com.au/drake/history/hist33.html [The will of Philippa Drake, which appears in print, names both William and Acton, in the same line! He was the son of Richard Drake of Esher, equerry to Queen Elizabeth. John Drake (son of his cousin William) who was in New England in 1633, was probably the John who came here in 1630 and finally settled in Windsor Conn. where he died 17 Aug. 1659. The Johanna Hooker named as being in New England, was probably Joanna, daughter of Rev. Thomas Hooker of Hartford Conn. who married Rev. Thomas Sheppard of Cambridge Mass.] This [Salmon] surname a few days ago when looking into Colchester area etc., there is an alias surname into [Salmon], can't remember what it was from right now(!!!). Wood and Ward families (!!!). Clackton (Clacton) in Essex: This one of the 3-4 places I have just mentioned recently in Essex that pertains to the main Collens tree I have just pointed out to be +-R's tree etc. Here again we are back to this Griggs and Greene and William + Abigail Markham ale Marchant of Ipswich England. This Markham of Ipswich will be related as I have said. And with a wife named Abigail, it is almost a foregone conclusion ?. Is she a Ward ?. Even in Myland there one Ward family there too. Anyway, this web page must be kept for future ref. ***: I have to mention that is there not a Fitz-wauter in or around Colchester ?. There is, ... ... ... , I think, not one John??? Markham alias Walter? around Colchester ?. The place name is probably here again meant to be Bramford in Suffolk, probably confused by the writer with the family surname of Bamford no doubt.... It is the slip of the pen after having so many people surnamed Bamford around the text. The Wheeler family will be related it seems back in EN. Stiles too. http://www.webpak.net/~cdm2/kimball/pafg175.htm [Some Notes]: Now there seems to a COLLENS (Collyns) family in and about Wiscombe Devonshire (!!!). Mr. Wright m. Collens Drake in Wiscombe Devonshire. [COLLENS]. Robert Collyns b:1588 Wiscombe Devonshire m:1621. (England) Joan Drake b:1592 Wiscombe Devonshire. This all puts a slightly different perspective to what I am looking at ... ... ... - S.K.M. - [!!!] ==================== "I sometimes wonder how many people can actually sit back and consider how lucky one can be to experience a Human life on Earth? To be able to have one chance to see the Universe and wonder about it. Can you imagine a Universe without Life, nothing would know it was even there at all !!!". S.K.M. ====================
MGC: Acton (5Meg pdf): http://www.sothebys.co.uk/images/home/flash/shrubland/ShrublandFamilyTree.pdf You can see the Buxton connection again, this Fowle surname comes in, and Greene (!!!), Bowes, Lee, etc. - S.K.M. - [!!!] ===============

Charles -----Original Message----- From: collins-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:collins-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Linda Pearson Sent: Monday, June 28, 2010 7:35 PM To: COLLINS@rootsweb.com Subject: [COLLINS] Stephen Collins b. 1802 Kentucky I believe Stephen Collins who was born somewhere in Kentucky may have married his first wife also from Kentucky and moved to Henry County, Illinois (near Weller)where daughters, Emiline b. 1841 and Clarissa, b. 1834 as well as other children were born to the couple. I'm not sure if Clarissa was actually a sister but the two women married their respective spouses within a few days of one another, and are shown living in close proximity all of their married lives. Clarissa married an Irishman named Luke Carrigan and Emiline married an Italian immigrant by the name of John Thomas Belt. The women's mother (my gggrandmother) may have died around 1848-49 as Stephen married Ann Fenn (b. 1830 in Illinois) in Henry County Illinois in 1849. The Belts, The Carrigans and Stephen and Annie Collins along with several children all removed by covered wagons to Jackson Twp, Macon County, Missouri around 1866 where they lived out their lives. Emiline passed away in 1876 and her husband J! ohn Belt is said to have later married her younger sister, Nancy (Jane) Collins who was born in 1850 in Illinois. I cannot find an 1850 or 1860 Census for a Stephen Collins from Kentucky, living in Illinois where all his children were born. If anyone has information of knowledge on this family, I would appreciate hearing from them. Emiline Collins was my great-great grandmother and I would like to trace this line but have so little to go on.
