    3. Dauwalders Celebrate 50th Wedding Year at Taft Home TAFT—It was a rosy world in the spring of 1900 when C. P. Dau- walder and Mary L. Colegrove were united in marriage in Montrose, Mo. The calendar gate the date as April 4. The 26-year-old bridegroom had already attained a degree of success in the business world. Manager of a furniture and hardware store, on paydays he had the comfortable knowledge that when he laid his monthly check, in the lap of his 25- year-old bride he was bringing her the top salary of the firm, an ade- quite $32.50. The bridal couple lived in Montrose four years and then made a number of successive moves over the years. But when they left Montrose a son had been added to the family, Francis Colgrove. Later they were to welcome Donald D. who was born in Hotchkiss, Colo., June 10, 1911, and Kenneth C., who arrived ia Myton, Utah, August 23, 1813. Partnership Remaining in the furniture and hardware busniess Mr. Dauwalder secured a partnership in Nevada, Mo., and later added a mortuary partnership as well. Planning to beat the rail- road into the Uintah basin, Dauwal- der opened a furniture store and with a span of horses and a wagon hauled freight SO miles over rugged country. Delivery service, also by team, extended for a radius of 40 miles. Came West Mr. Dauwalder retired in 1935 and moved to Los Angeles and to Culver City. Back in the Uintah basin the people are still waiting for the railroad. The couple's golden wedding anniver- sary was celebrated Sunday at the home of Danald D. Dauwalder, super- intendent of the West Side Hospital district. Decorations were in keeping with the occasion and gifts included gold rings from Donald and his wife Julia, and their sons John and Peter. Coming from Los Angeles to join in the festivities were Kenneth C. and Verta Dauwalder and their children Robert and Katherine and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hawthorne. 2. The Fence Post [Greeley, CO], Monday, May 24, 2010, p. 113 L. [Larry] W. “Corky” Colgrove, 80, of Fort Lupton, Colo., passed away May 13, 2010 at Longmont United Hospital in Longmont, Colo., after a lengthy illness. Corky Colgrove was born in Mott, N.D., to Edgar W. Colgrove and Fern Acklin. He grew up in Regent and New England, N.D., until graduation from high school at which time he joined the newly formed U.S. Air Force. Corky had a love of aviation that lasted his lifetime, and he earned his private pilot’s license when he was a teenager. Corky served in the Berlin Airlift operation and upon his discharge started his career with United Airlines that spanned 35 years. He married Avis E. Colgrove on Aug. 18, 1955, in Great Bend, N.D. Corky had many interests and was involved in numerous community projects during his lifetime. He had a deep love of his community and offered countless hours to the city he called home for more than 50 years. He was active with the city council, planning commissions, Trapper Days committee, Fort Lupton Historical Society and the Lion’s Club to name only a few. He was known as the “Johnny Appleseed of Fort Lupton” with his Fort Lupton Re-Forestation Project. Because of his love of trees, he volunteered his time over the years to planting trees in the Fort Lupton area, including the city parks and schools. Most dear to his heart was the “Sky Ranch for Boys” in Buffalo, S.D. He was recognized as an especially meritorious supporter in 2000. The other organizations that Corky belonged to included the Elks Lodge in Brighton, Moose Lodge in Greeley, Colo., and the American Legion of Fort Lupton, Colo. He was a member and supporter of the Air Force Association, Air Lift Tanker Association, Berlin Air Lift Veterans and Foundation, The U.S. Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio, National Rifle Association and Smithsonian Institute. He is survived by his wife, Avis E. Colgrove of Fort Lupton; his son, Hugh W. (Angela) Colgrove of Jacksonville, Fla.; a brother-in-law, Willard (Betty) Hoeft of Hankinson, N.D.; his sisters, Bobby (Larry) Ketterling of New England, N.D., Carol Jung of Dickinson, N.D., Linell Patchin of Joplin, Mo., and Linda Peterman of Sioux Falls, S.D.; his sisters-in-law, Dorothy Mueller of Fergus Falls, Valeria (John) Bohlig of Minot, N.D., and Marlys Hoeft of Wahpeton, N.D.; and his granddaughters, Ashley S., Audra D. and Arhryn A. Colgrove, all from Jacksonville, Fla. He is preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar W. (Fern Acklin) Colgrove, and two brothers-in-law, Eugene Hoeft and Art Mueller. Services were held May 19, at the Fort Lupton First United Methodist Church. [Note: I checked censuses and found his paternal grandfather was William Colgrove, born either in Australia or at sea. William’s father was Levi Colgrove born VT or MA. As often happens the surname is spelled both Colgrove and Colegrove. This is not my line, just an obit I spotted for whomever it may help.]

    1. [COLEGROVE] Dignity on Wheels - John V Colegrove
    2. Decatur Daily Review Thursday, July 7, 1892 Dignity on Wheels Hon. John V. Colegrove commenced the year 116 of the American Independence with a brand new suit of clothes. 'Squire John looked at himself in the glass. The suit looked well, fitted well, felt well, became him, and in short the 'squire looked charmingly. But he not only looked charmingly he felt that way. It was a feeling of serene happiness which the 'squire hadn't experienced for a long time. He seemed to like this feeling and concluded to experience it some more. He kept on experiencing and at last got gay. Now, as the 'squire is naturally of a melancholy turn of mind this gayety affected him greatly, he himself didn't just exactly know how. This much, however, he did not know, viz: that something had to be done, and the 'squire actually did something, 9snother astonishing occurence). the first thing in the line of amusement that suggested itself to the 'squire's mind was a bicycle ride. Of course he had never ridden one of these animals: but this fact didn't discourage him, for he reasoned, and reasoned logically, that as he had never before worn a first class suit of clothes, and yet the very first effort in that direction ahd been crowned with success, therefore what would be the matter with a bicycle? Why nothing." Without any further deliberation the 'squire went and hired a wheel, and not being fond of notoriety he took the creature to a back alley. It was with considerable trouble that John managed to get on it, but strange as it may seem after a spin of less than ten steps it was without any troublew whatever that the machine managed to get on him. The bicycle rode the 'squire until some sympathizing friends, that is - of the 'squire's, not the bicycle's - took it off him. The 'squire's new pantaloons are now at the tailor shop undergong a series of repairs. For further particulars it might be well to state that his honor reached the repair shop by the aid of a couple of newspapers in lieu of less transparent nether garments. 1. [COLEGROVE] More on Prof F.W. Colegrove and the SnowBound Train
    2. In addition to an article previously posted by Terry Colegrove: Newark Advocate (Newark, Ohio) Thursday, April 3, 1902 Train Stalled by SnowDrifts North Dakota Passengers suffer from the cold and hunger One man attempted suicide and hastened the rescue of the entire party - sidetracked four days and five nights St Paul, April 3 - Passengers arriving on a Great Northern train, due last friday, tell of being snowbound for four days and fie nights on the prairies of North Dakota in the midst of the worst blizzard the Northwes has seen in many years, with only food enough for two frugal meals a day, and with such a small amount of fuel that the ladies had to wrap themselves in blankets and the men to wear their overcoats day and night to keep from freezing. The train was completely lost to the world. Late Thursday afternoon it picked its way out of Williston in the hope of being able to reach Monit, 14 miles away, before night. Almost midway, at a little stopping place called Ray where there is only a siding, a coal shed, and awater tank the train stalled. The engineer thought he could run the engine back to Williston and get aid, and, taking the conductor with him started on the trip. The lone engine was stuck in a dried in a cut a short distance out of the town and had to be abandoned. This left the train of eight coaches and about 250 passengers alone on the siding and with all communication cut off. Then started the long siege, during which the cold had to be borne and hunger stifled. There was much suffering and there was an incipient riot the first day. the second class passengers insited that they must have as much or more food than the others, and as they were in larger numbers and had more ravenous appetites it was difficult to confine them to their quota. Many were not willing, as they first class passengers insisted, that the women and children should be taken care of first, but after some argument they were prevailed upon to yield. Monday evening, Prof. Colegrove of the University of Washington, who was enroute East on a vacation trip and who had been despondent and morose, attempted suicide by cutting his throat with a razor. There was a physician on the train but he had no facilities for performing the necessary operation and it ws absolutely necessary to get into communication with one of the neighboring towns. In their desperation the passengers broke open everything in the train's chest, and in the conductor's box found a telegraph instrument. A young man, an electrician, on the train faced the blizzard and tapped one of the wires and attached the instrument. He knew little about telegraphy and notified the operators at both Minot and Williston of what had occured. From each place a snow plow was started in front of an engine bearing a surgeon. The one from Minot after a hard nights work reached the siding early the following morning and the wounded man was removed on the first train to St. Paul where he was cared for at the City Hospital. The almost famished passengers who had suffered from the cold and exposure were given food and warm berths in the first train pushed through the drifts. The rotary plow made one trip through the drift between Ray and Minot, but the snow piled so rapidly that it was necessary for the rotary to pass through and then precede the train through the cut. Prof. Colegrove was brought to st. Paul yesterday. The jugular vein is partially severed and it is not believed he can recover. He has been ill from too close application to work, and had decided to spend a month with relatives and friends in Hamilton, N.Y.
