    3. LIFE LOST IN CORNING FIRE ------ Three-Year-Old Child the Victim. ------ RESCUERS FAILED ------ Bert Cole Dashed Into Burning Room. ------ MOTHER RECENTLY DIED ------ The Child Was in the Care of Mrs Colegrove-Was Dead When Taken >From the House-Fire Stated From a Spark From a Match. Curtain Set on Fire. ------ Corning, Feb 29.--A serious fire oc- curred here this morning after 4 o'clock, in which a child lost his life. The fire occured at the home of Mrs. Susan Cole- grove on West Erie avenue. At 4:30 Emma Colegrove arose, and to see what time it was struck a match. The brim- stone lighted and flew off into some lace curtains. She worked heroically to extinguish the flame but it gained headway. This all occurred in the sitting room, and after she called to her brother upstairs for help. He responded and a general alarm was given and an alarm sent in to the department by George Hose, a neighbor next door, who heard the cries of fire. The mother of Miss Colgrove was recovering from pneumonia and was carried to a neighbors house after which the son attempted to go upstairs to get the three-year-old child of Autonia Sabine, but the stairway was a living blaze. The occupants upstairs attempted to go down- stairs, but were driven back and then leaped from the windows. The Sabine child was being taken care of by the Colegrove people, since its mother died a few weeks ago, and although great effort was made to rescue it, the child was dead when finally rescued. In all probability having been suffocated. Bert Cole, the plumber, made a heroic dash from a ladder into the burning room and grabbed the child, which he handed to Captain Ryan of the police force, who decended with it from the burning building, but the child was dead and its face slightly burned. The blow to its father, Antonio Sabine is a hard one, as he lost his wife from pneumonia only a few weeks ago. Mrs. Colegrove was nearly crazed over the death of the child, it having been in her care adn it is feared the excitement may be fatal, owing to her weakened condition from pneumonia. Both Colegrove girls were slightly burned, and were cared for by Dr. E. J. Carpenter. The faily lost most of the personal effects, including clothing. The loss on the home will be about $3,000.
