Pistol Wound Proves Fatal Sciotoville Man Is Found Dead Elmer Colegrove, 78, operator of a confectionery at Fourth St. and Harding Ave in Sciotoville, was found dead of a bullet wound in the head this morning. The body was discovered in a rear room of the business place wht a pistol nearby. Police chief Robert Edwards said death apperently was from suicide but a further investigation is under way. Ivan Culp of Minford Rt. 1, driver for the Leet Lumber Co. at Scioto- ville, a close friend of Mr. Colegrove, went to the confectionery about 8 a.m. and found the front door locked. He was unable to arouse the operator and notified Patrolman Joe Cook of the city police department. A door was forced to gain entrance. Mr Culp told Chief Edwards he made a purchase of a soft drink in the store Thursday night and at that time Mr. Colegrove appeared in his usual good spirits. Dr. James F. Scott, Scioto County Coroner, was at the scene at noon. Mr. Colegrove's son, Ellsworth, who makes his home in Wayne, Mich., was contacted by telephone. Services for Mrs. Colegrove will be held Monday at 3 p.m. at the Wappner funeral home with Rev. Samuel R. Parreh officiating. Burial will be in the Mansfield cemetery. Services for Colegrove will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at the Jones Memorial with Rev. Ralph Mount pastor of the Pleasant Valley Baptist church officiating. Burial will be in the Memorial park. Police said Mrs. Colegrove was shot in the back with a 12 gauge shotgun as she leaned over a crib in the Colegrove trailer home to pick up her 17-month-old son, Kenneth. Colegrove then fatally wounded himself in the chest. Both died instantly. Mrs. Colegrove was born in Mansfield July 10 1932, the daughter of Edward and Mary Stickle and lived her entire life in Mansfield. In addition to her son and father, she is survived by her stepmother, Mrs. Betty Jane Stickle, a sister, Mrs. Raymond Dale Mumaw, and a brother John Edward Stickle, all of Mansfield. Colegrove was born in Ashland, Ky., and came here with his parents when he was a year old. He served 18 months with the U.S. Army after world War II and spent eight months overseas, part of which was in Korea before the outbreak of the Korean war. He was discharged in 1948 and became an employe of the city garbage department July 14 1949. In addition to his parents and son he is survived by two brothers, William K. and elwood Colegrove, and two sisters Mrs. Paul Shoup and Mrs. Sara Turner, all of Mansfield. SOLDIER REPORTED KILLED IN ACTION Olive Hill, Ky., Sept. 18. (AP) Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Colegrove of nearby Gregoryville have been informed thier son, Pvt. Oliver Colegrove, was killed in action in Korea August 16. He was the first Carter county man reported killed in the Korean fighting. Colegrove, age 18, enlisted in the army October 7, 1948, and trained at Camp Breckinridge. He went overseas in January 1949, and was stationed in Japan before the Korean invasion. Mrs. Abigail Brooks Mrs. Abigail Brooks, 83, of 1219 McConnell Av, died at 2:20 p.m. Friday at Portsmouth General Hospital after suffering a stroke. She was admitted as a patient there nights before. She was born Oct. 20, 1865, at Minford, a daughter of Ezra and Mary Colegrove Snyder. She was married first to William Rowley, who died in 1893. In 1904 she was wed to Samuel Brooks, who also preceded her in death in 1929. Surviving are two sons, Jesse Rowley, 1416 Spring st, and Frank Rowley, 1765 Poplar st. Two Sons, two brothers and a sister also are deceased. Mrs. Brooks was a member of Central Christain Church and of the women's auxillary of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Fire- men.
