One of Charles' grandsons, Thomas WOLVERTON, was a Loyalist from Sussex Co., NJ, who emigrated to New Brunswick in 1783. Because the name Joseph is prominent among Thomas' descendants, I thought that Joseph WOBERTON of Maine might come from this line and for some reason had changed his name on returning to the US. This hypothesis has been unprovable up to this point, and I am coming to think that the name is indeed WOBERTON. The only earlier WOBERTON that I have found is John WOBERTON, who appears in the 1800 census of Tolland Co., CT (p.675), aged 26-45, with 2 females aged 16-26, 3 females aged 10-16, 2 females under 10, and 1 male under 10. This son, b. 1790-1800 is a candidate for the Joseph WOBERTON of ME, whom census records show as b. 1790-1794. I would like to hear from anyone with information about Joseph WOBERTON. I have copies of land records and other miscellaneous information on the family in Gardiner, Kennebec Co., ME, that I would be happy to share.
