Shirley was born September 28, 1935 in Mansfield, PA the daughter of the late Donald and Thirza Hall Colby. She was a graduate of Galeton High School in 1953. She married her first husband, Perry Deacon, who pre-deceased her on August 14, 1978. Shirley married her husband, Stephen R. Mathews, on June 30, 1990 and they would have celebrated their 12th Wedding Anniversary on June 30, 2002. Shirley was the Branch Manager of Elmira Savings Bank at the Arnot Mall prior to her retirement. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Horseheads prior to moving to Virgina. Shirley was pre-deceased by her sister, Beverly Jean Hurd. Shirley is survived by her husband Stephen R. Mathews; daughter and son-in-law: Sheree & Warren Novick of Virginia Beach, VA; grandchildren; David Novick and Rebecca Novick both of Virginia Beach, VA; step-children: Stephen & Christina Mathews of Ft. Myers, Florida, Bruce & Connie Mathews of Horseheads, NY, Kenneth & Janet Mathews of Locke, NY, Brenda & Keith Miller of Elmira, NY, Rosanne & Andy Moroneso of Atlanta, GA, Cynthia Mathews of Elmira Heights, NY, and Mary & Stuart McLean of Dunkirk, MD; 14 step-grandchildren and 4 step-great grandchildren; step-mother-in-law: Lena Deacon of Owego, NY; sister-in-law: Rose Mathews of Shamokin, PA; aunt: Eleanor Hall of Towanda, PA; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Van Buskirk-Lynch Funeral Home Mill St. & Grand Central Ave. Horseheads, NY on Tuesday July 2, 2002 from 6-9 PM. Shirley's Funeral Services celebrating Her Life will be held on Wednesday July 3, 2002 at 10 AM at The First United Methodist Church of Horseheads 1034 West Broad Street Horseheads, NY. The Rev. Dr. Robert O. Sherburne will officiate. Interment in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Elmira, NY. The family will provide their own flowers and those wishing may remember Shirley through memorial contributions to the First United Methodist Church of Horseheads Building Fund 1034 West Broad Street Horseheads, NY 14845.
