Colby Jr., 65, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Orange, Calif., the morning of Jan. 25, 2006. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at Maple Hill Funeral Home, 32nd Street and Shawnee Drive, Kansas City, Kan. Charles was born in Kansas City and grew up in the Turner area, where he graduated from Turner High School in 1958. He joined the typographical union after serving his apprenticeship at The KC Labor Beacon. He worked at The Kansas City Star before moving to Denver, Colo., in 1967, working for The Denver Post. In 1983, he moved to Canoga Park, Calif., to work for The Daily News. In 1999, he moved to Santa Fe, N.M., to work for The Santa Fe New Mexican. He started as typesetter and learned computers to manage the MIS department. He retired in 2001 due to vision problems, moving back to California when his last grandson was born. He enjoyed traveling, reading, visiting with friends and neighbors and watching his grandson grow. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Rayetta Hartford Colby; two children and spouses, Ronald and Debora Colby of Denver, Colo., and Kelly and Scott Andre of Orange, Calif.; three grandchildren, Michael Blackston, Jason and Garrett Andre; a sister, Janet Ward of Kansas City, Kan.; and a brother, Terry Colby of Dallas, Texas. He was loved and will be missed by his family and friends.
