Cousin George G Colby born at Greece, Monroe Co., N.Y., May 1,1840 and was mustered into the Army December 12, 1861 as a private at Chillicothe, Mo. for three years. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on January 7,1862 and served at Chillicothe until March. His Regiment, the 23rd Missouri Infantry, Co. K. moved to St. Louis until April. During the battle of Shiloh, Tenn. (Pittsburg) on April 6,1862 the whole regiment was captured. He was held at several locations and suffered from exposure and starvation. He was held at Montgomery, Ala, and then Madison, Ga until Oct 4,1862 then to Richmond until Oct 11, 1862. His name appears on a list of Lieutenants, C.S.A. delivered at Aiken's Landing, Va., and exchanged for Lieutenants of the Federal Army. He was listed as age 24, 5'9" a nurseryman. Nov.25,1862 a hand written letter of resignation was written at New Brunswick, N.J. by George Colby. By special order of the Adjutant Generals Office, Washington, D.C. dated Nov. 11,1862 he was honorably discharged as physically unable to perform duties. George was later employed as a clerk in the office of 2nd Auditor of the Treasury in Washington from July 1864 to Oct 1886 and from Oct 1893 to May 1905. He often suffered and/or missed work because of chronic rheumatism and liver trouble that he got while in rebel prisons. He married Lillie K Boothby at her home in Limerick, Maine on Aug.12, 1875 by Rev Albert Cole. She was born about 1854. Their children were; Guy B Colby b 9/3/1876; Wilmer Colby b 12/26/1880; Wm G Colby and Geo G Colby Jr b 7/4/1883 (twins). George went on pension about 1890 until his death Sept.13,1915 at Limerick, Maine. Lillie died Aug.27, 1926. (17)
