    3. William M. Colby (abt 1831-1863) served as Captain in Company F, 130 Illinois Infantry. He joined Aug. 7, 1862 at Camp Butler. He was killed in action May 22, 1863 at Vicksburg, Miss. I believe that he was the son of Simeon Colby and Charlotte Sylvia Mudge. According to his enlistment record he was born in Huron Co (?) N.Y. The 1850 census for Bunker Hill, Macoupin Co., IL lists Simeon Colby with his daughter, Sarah age 13. Nearby was Charles Colby, age 19-farmer-living with a farmer's family. Nearby is listed William Colby, blacksmith, age 17, next to his sister, Mary, age 15, living with a blacksmith's family. Charlotte Colby died earlier in the year. Looks like William was apprenticed to a blacksmith and Mary was the hired girl to take care of the small children in the household. William married Hannah Updike and they are listed in the 1860 census for Greenville, Bond Co., Illinois along with their three children, William A. age 4, Harry P. age 2,Carrie V.age 1. Living in the same household were William S. Updike and his sister, Sarah (brother and sister of Hannah Colby) William's sister, Mary Maria, b. 9 May 1835 in Albany, N.Y. Married 1) John T. Laws (Sept. 7, 1856 in Bond Co., ILL) and they had two children, Charlotte S. age 3, Sarah M age 2 (1860 census for Greenville, Bond Co. Ill) John T. Laws was killed in the Civil War, 16 December 1864 in Nashville, Tenn. Mary M. Colby married 2) William A. Updike 31 March 1867. They had two children, Elizabeth Mary, b. 28 Dec 1867 and William, b. 1870 who died as a small child. Mary M. Colby Updike died 20 June 1910 in St. Louis, MO.
