I am new to this list but I’ve read the archives. I am searching for information about an ancestor Louisa COLBY and I hope someone on this list can help. When I was in high school, my mother's mother, Marion CLAPP gave me the sampler she had, which was made by Louisa COLBY. I don’t remember being told how we were related, nor can my mother, just that we were. I was given her name COLBY as my middle name. Well, after I got married, my mother gave me the collection of coin silver, which had also been her mother's. The sampler had her name, Louisa COLBY, as a 12-year-old, but no date. The silver is engraved L. C. Q. So the other day, I just happened to be looking at the silver. Later that afternoon I asked Mom if she knew what the Q. stood for, and it just popped into her head, Louisa COLBY QUIMBY. She even said, "I have no idea how I remembered that but asking about the silver and giving me the initials, I remembered. I remember my mother saying her name. And 'COLBY QUIMBY' is sort of strange so I remembered it because of that too." So suddenly I had a lot of new information. The sampler has no date -- it just says "12 years." So I looked on Ancestry for Louisa QUIMBY and I found her- and her mother, Lydia COLBY, was living with her!! And in 1860 and 1870 she lived in Ballston, Saratoga, NY, which is where my grandmother lived and right near where my mother was raised. The Ballston Spa Village Cemetery is full of CLAPPs. Below is what I know about Louisa COLBY so far. I still don’t know how the COLBY’s overlap with my grandmother, Marion CLAPP. She was born 11 OCT 1893 in NY. Her father was George Fox CLAPP (1860-1945) and her mother was Mallie L. BARNES (1862 – 1941). George’s parents were Russell P. CLAPP and Madelia FOX. Mallie’s parents were John BARNES and Caroline C. UNKNOWN. I know more, but that is enough for this email! Louisa COLBY – born ca. 1812-1813 in Massachusetts !850 census: she was living in Wentworth, Grafton, New Hampshire with her husband John QUIMBY, her mother, Lydia COLBY and her daughter Emily, age 16. 1860 & 1870 census: She was living in Ballston, Saratoga, NY with her husband and mother. 1880 census: she was living in Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana with her husband, daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter. John QUIMBY was born ca. 1812-1813 in New Hampshire. The 1850 and 1860 census list him as a shoemaker. In 1870 he was a horse dealer. In 1880 he was a retired hotel keeper. Emily (Emiley) QUIMBY was born ca. 1834 in New Hampshire. She lived with her parents and grandmother in 1850 as stated above. She got married sometime after 1865, when her husband’s first wife died (I think). In 1870 she lived in Richland, Shelby, Indiana with her husband William MIDDLESWORTH and his 4 of his 6 children by his first wife, Louisa Ann WALDEN. In the 1900 census she is widowed and living next door to her step-son Hugh in Indianapolis. She died 7 JUL 1901 and is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis. As far as I know, she never had any children of her own. Lydia Colby was born ca. 1786-1787 in Massachusetts. Since she was not on the 1880 census, so I assume she died between 1870 and 1880. Her husband was born in Massachusetts and that is all I know about him. Do any of you know any more about these people?
