For several years I have been searching for the origins of my great grandfather, George Henry Colby born May 10, 1860 and married in 1883 to Anna Robson. They lived their married lives in Erie County, New York. I am aware of the pedigree on various websites, including Rootsweb, that have him as being born in New London, Merrimack County, New Hampshire. He is listed as the son of George and Elizabeth Colby of the same place. I am finally getting around to asking for the sources of this information because: Despite a page by page search of the 1860 and 1870 censuses of New London, I find no George or Elizabeth Colby. When I wrote to New Hampshire, their responce was that they have no birth record for George despite searching back to the 1700's. I have numerous records for George H. that give numerous conflicting places of birth. The earliest of these is the 1880 census for Bradford, Mckean Co., Pa. , where a 20 year old George is a bartender living with the Saloonkeeper's family named Daigle. George and the Daigles give their place of birth as Mass. with the origin of their fathers as Canada and mothers as France. Can anyone shed any light on this? Jackie
