If anyone is interested I read some interesting news stories on Ancestry.com that were about Colby's. The newspaper was from Mitchell, South Dakota and was called the Mitchell Daily Republican. The articles were from the 1891 and 1886. One of the stories was about a young man named S. A. Colby who was possibly killed when he fell from a race horse he was racing when the horse slipped in the mud and fell on him. The race took place in Dubuque, Iowa in October 1891. The other article was from Aug 21, 1886 and concerned an incident that took place in Hillsboro, NH. A team of four girls was crossing the railroad tracks when they were struck by a train. The were Jessie Colby who was instantly killed, Blanche E. Colby (fatally), Nellie Flanders and Norah Colby who was severely injured. (I did find the girls on Ancestry and they were sisters and were daughters of Moses Colby and Ellen Morrill.) This story appeared in different newspapers in four different states. If anyone is interested let me know and I will let you know what the full articles said. There was one other news story about a William R. Colby who was going to be arrested in San Francisco by US special agents, for a train robbery he had committed in Austin, Texas in 1872. The article was written in Aug of 1888. It seems as if William was quite the rascal. He posed as a spiritualist, a Baptist Minister, a gambler and a Medium. Nancy Colby Shockey

My grandfather posed as a medium, doctor, and spirtualist. Sounds like cut from the same cloth! I would love to have more info about this San Francisco Colby! Thanks!!
