    1. More NY Colby's
    2. I found my Smith COLBY line in the 1855 Franklinville, Cattaraugus, New York State census. This is located very close to Holland and Sardinia, Erie, New York. The family was listed as: Smith Colby, head, age 27, born in Erie Co., New York Amanda Colby, wife, age 28, born in Montgomery Co., New York Edwin Colby, son, age 5, born in Erie Co., New York Marvin Colby, son, age 4, born in Erie Co., New York Fannie ? Colby, daughter, age 2, born in Cattaraugus Co., New York Duane Colby, son, age 1 month (as of June 14, 1855) born in Cattaraugus Co., NY At least Smith and Marvin moved to Ogle Co., ILL before 1859. The wife Amanda and all her children EXCEPT Marvin, never appear in another census. Smith Colby remarried to Samantha Robinson on April 4, 1959 in Ogle Co., ILL (the marriage index list his name as CALBY). By the middle of 1860 Smith and Samantha were living in Douglas, Bremmer Co., Iowa. Marvin is left behind in Ogle, ILL with a family by the name of William and Theresa KNIGHT. Marvin lived there until his death at the County Poor Farm on Dec 23, 1903. As the mother of four it is impossible for me to imagine myself leaving one of my children behind as I moved off to a new life, with a new spouse in another state. Is there anyway to find out if there was some type of disease or epidemic that "may" have killed his entire family in Cattaraugus Co., NY or in Ogle Co., Illinois between 1856 to 1859?
