She was born April 28, 1929, in Akron, Ohio, the daughter of Clair C. and Ruth C. (Noon) Phillips. She was educated in schools in Akron, Ohio, and graduated from Business College in Ohio. She married Ray O. Colby in 1951, who predeceased her in 1993. Betty was a homemaker and worked as a secretary at Unity College for several years. She attended Dixmont United Methodist Church, was a member of Dixmont Ladies Club, Dixmont Extension, North Star Grange, Brooks Senior Citizens and Red Hatters Club. She was the exhibits co-coordinator at the Bangor State Fair for a year and also worked as a reporter for a local newspaper. Betty loved to laugh, loved her family and friends, enjoyed traveling, meeting people, playing Canasta, laughing and enjoying life all along the way. She is survived by three sons, Dale Colby and his wife, Annette, of Wasilla, Alaska, Ronald Colby and his wife, Sue, of Litchfield and Jerry Colby of Palmyra; one daughter and her husband, Sally and Greg Richards of Corinna; one brother, Clair Phillips of Santa Maria, Calif.; two sisters, Joan Tanner and Shirley Stavroff, both of Akron, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Michelle, Scott, Adam, Luke, Neal, Sarah, Jason and Laura; two great-grandchildren, Ryder and Utah; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Memorial services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, at Dixmont United Methodist Church, Route 9, Dixmont, with the Rev. Charles Langbein officiating. Immediately after the service a potluck reception will be held at Dixmont Goldcrest Riders Snowmobile Club, Gates Road, Dixmont.
