Shields Salem Jean Colby Shields, 80, of Salem, S.C., died peacefully in her home on Tuesday, April 10, 2007, after a lengthy illness. Born on September 27, 1926, in Rochester, N.Y., she was the daughter of Gladys (Williamson) and Bernard A. Colby. She was educated in the Longmeadow, Mass., public schools, graduated from Classical High School, Springfield, Mass., in 1944, and from Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, N.Y., in 1948 with a BS degree. She was a member of the First Church of Christ, Congregational in Longmeadow, Mass., a former member of the Junior League of Springfield, Mass., and Hartford, Conn., president of the Springfield, Mass., Skidmore Club, and an honorary member of the Dartmouth College Class of 1952. Various life insurance companies employed Jean as a secretary from her graduation from Skidmore through 1956, when she became the secretary to the president of the Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company until 1988. She was predeceased by her husband, Reed, in 2006, and her brother, Donald B. Colby, in 1994. A stepdaughter, Margo Dufresne of Pennsylvania, survives her. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of your choice. A date for her memorial service will be announced at a later time. Cremation Society of South Carolina.
