    1. Re: [COLBY] Smith Colby
    2. Gordon, Smith Colby's obituary said he was born in Erie Co., New York, in 1828. He is lived in Sardinia, Erie, NY in the 1850 census (with a Flavel and Lydia Osburn, his wife Amanda and son, Edwin). In the 1855 New York State Census he lived in Franklinville, Cattaraungus, New York, with his first wife Amanda, and children, Edwin, Marvin, Fanny and Duane. As to the SHOCKEY question. All people with the surname SHOCKEY are related to each other. It was not a surname until our original ancestor immigrated to the USA in 1737 and his surname of SCHACKE was "Americanized" to SHOCKEY. He was the only known Schacke who had his name Americanized to SHOCKEY. So if your last name is Shockey you are related to all other Shockey's in the USA. I've been married to "two" different Stephen Shockey's and have traced both of them back to the original immigrant ancestor, John Christopher Shockey (AKA Johann Christoffel Schacke, who settled in Bucks Co., Pennsylvania after entering America through Philadelphia, PA). The Shockey family settled in Pennsylvania before moving into Maryland and other surrounding states in the 1700's and 1800's, now of course they are in all states. Nancy: Two questions for you. Could your Colby line have come from Pennsylvania ? Is your husband relatedto the Shockey's of Franklin Co., Pa. ? Gordon crooks
