I came across these two guys and wonder if anyone recognizes them. Martin Colby was born 7 July 1896 and Lewis Fred Colby was born 8 August 1904. Both on the Happy Camp reservation in Siskiyou County, California. They are listed on the1928 California Indian Census and Allotment Roll. Their father was Fred M.T. Colby, born March 1869 in New York. Their mother was a local girl named Mary. Any ideas??? -- Alice Colby Volkert www.volkertservices.com skype A.C.Volkert
Ron, I don't know if Sampson is the correct parentage. Just a note to all. I saw a TV program last night that was fascinating in the research done on identifying a body discovered in a construction site dig. If you get a chance to catch it on TV the information on tracing the genealogy of the body and identification through DNA of identified descendant is worth watching. Mystery Boy in Iron Coffin Identified Randolph E. Schmid, Associated Pres Sept. 21, 2007 — Researchers have solved the mystery of the boy in the iron coffin. The cast-iron coffin was discovered by utility workers in Washington two years ago. Smithsonian scientists led by forensic anthropologist Doug Owsley set about trying to determine who was buried in it, so the body could be placed in a new, properly marked grave. The body was that of 15-year-old William Taylor White, who died in 1852 and was buried in the Columbia College cemetery, they announced Thursday. "The mystery of this young boy's life and a strong sense of responsibility to properly identify him kept me and the entire team focused and determined. This was not a one-person project. It took more than three dozen people nearly two years to make the ID," Deborah Hull-Walski, an anthropologist at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, said in a statement. http://dsc.discovery.com/news/2007/09/21/coffinboy_his.html?category=history&guid=20070920160030 Bob Colby

Who is Moses Colby who married Abigail Eastman? Who are the parents of this Moses? It has been sugested that he is the son of Sampson Colby and Betty Hoyt. In Sampson Colby's probate the only son's listed are Ebenezer, Sampson and Abner and they are listed as Ebenezer, the eldest son, Sampson, the 2nd son and Abner, the youngest son, which leave's doubt that this Moses is Sampson and Betty's son. I like how people post obituaries for the "current" Colby families. But are there any reliable websites and/or databases where people can post these types of things, maybe from their local papers, and where they can be searched by others? I'm not just talking about current obits, but old ones as well. I was thinking if someone wanted to go to a library or local museum that housed old newspapers and they wanted to transcribe and then upload them to share with other genealogists and family historians. Is there such a vehicle available? Thanks. Aboard the Arbella: The ship that carried the colony's charter By John Goff/Preservation Perspective Fri Mar 21, 2008, 03:21 PM EDT Salem - Last week’s Salem Gazette carried a front-page article about the 17th-century Massachusetts Bay Colony Charter. Some speculated that Salem’s Endecott Charter “may be the only original copy of the [Massachusetts Bay] charter in the United States.” Perhaps it is not. A second copy, reportedly the original that crossed the Atlantic with Gov. John Winthrop aboard the ship Arbella in 1630, is preserved today in the Massachusetts State Archives in Boston. The Arbella was also known to history as the Charter Ship. Here let us describe what else is now known about the Charter carrying ship called the Arbella. One of the primary players in Salem’s early settlement and in the 1630 founding of Boston, Charlestown and the Massachusetts Bay Colony was not a person at all, but a finely framed galleon-like sailing ship. She was hewn and assembled by skilled English shipwrights who worked with traditional post-Medieval adzes, mallets and chisels. Framed up on an English waterfront not yet known to this author, she was crafted from mammoth timbers cut into keel, frames, planks and other ship parts. The parts were then all finely joined and caulked, in that significant year the Pilgrims first landed at Plymouth —1620. The stunning new vessel, reinforced with ship’s knees, iron rods and wood tree-nails or trunnels, was the mighty three-masted English ship Eagle. She also became known to history as the Arbella. She was a large vessel for those times, rated at between 350- and 400-ton cargo carrying capacity. She had an eagle figurehead, three masts and carried more than 20 cannon. Her crew consisted of 50 to 100 able-bodied seamen, needed in those days to hoist anchor, haul lines and, in cases of armed conflict, man the deafening guns. She was likely more than 100 feet long and about 30 feet wide. excerpt: http://www.wickedlocal.com/salem/archive/x1564565328 Bob

Author: RonColby41 Surnames: Colby, Prentice, Cussen Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.colby/1182.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: OBITUARY: Warren K. Colby, 95 Bolton - Warren K. Colby, a 50-year resident of Bolton, died at his home in Cape Rosier, Maine, on July 14, 2008, at the age of 95. He was a vital man with boundless energy and an insatiable curiosity. Born in Newton in 1913, he claimed to have been a strong student, and judging by his recollections, a stronger baseball and hockey player. He spent many summers at an old family home in the then-rural community of Epsom, N.H., where he honed his appreciation for old homes and farming, and where he developed the Yankee ability to build it, repair it, recycle it, or do without it. He attended Yale University, where he received a classic education and played varsity hockey and baseball. After graduating, he worked for Eastman Kodak Company. He combined the ready access to film and cameras with his love of skiing and took reels of film documenting early skiing in New England which he recently provided to the New England Ski Museum. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy Bureau of Aeronautics in Washington, D.C., the United Kingdom and the Pacific. In 1941 during a two-week leave, he married Mary (Mariah) Prentice; they spent their honeymoon in Stowe, Vt., where because of the war they had Mt. Mansfield to themselves. Upon discharge from the Navy, he and Mariah moved to Bolton, where they bought an old farm and the local general store (The Cracker Barrel) in the town center. He later lamented his poor business timing, as it was just at this time that supermarkets were coming into vogue. Parting with the store, he took a job with Browne and Nichols School as business manager. While there, he found time to develop and teach an anthropology course, as well as coach numerous hockey teams. In the early 1970s, he left Browne and Nichols and applied his business skills to various environmental causes. He helped write and pass open space legislation in Massachusetts, and subsequently worked for the Mass. Horticultural Society and finally the Dept. of Agriculture where he was instrumental in developing, promoting, and lobbying for the successful passage of the Agricultural Preservation Restriction legislation. One of his proudest achievements, this legislation enabled Massachusetts to purchase development rights from farmers, making it easier for farmers to keep their land in farming. This program, one of the first in the nation, has successfully preserved many acres of Massachusetts farmland, including several farms in Bolton. During his time in Bolton, he was active in town government. He was a member of the early regional school committee that established the Nashoba Regional School District and initiated construction of the high school. He helped establish the Bolton Conservation Commission as well as the Bolton Conservation Trust, and served as chairman of both for many years. After retiring in the early 1980s, he was able to focus all his energies on his many varied, lifelong interests. He skied regularly (well into his 80s); raced sailboats; built boats, his retirement home in Maine, and pine furniture; canoed the Allagash and cruised the coast of Maine; raised sheep, vegetables, and "poseys," and sang in various chorals and choruses. Well into his 90s, he was still exercising his mind by participating in colloquies, and tackling environmental and social issues by penning letters to editors of his regional newspapers. He is survived by his daughter, Betsy Cussen, former Bolton town clerk, now living in Denver, Colo.; three sons, J. Prentice Colby of Marlborough, N.H., Herb Colby of Bolton, and Andy Colby of Orlando, Fla.; their spouses, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family will celebrate his life at memorial services at Cape Rosier, Maine, and Bolton, in the near future. Remembrances in Warren's memory can be made to the Brooksville Free Public Library, P.O. Box 38, Brooksville, Maine, 04617, or the Bolton Conservation Trust, P.O. Box 14, Bolton, MA 01740. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
