Author: Pyroreb Surnames: Colby Gordon Worthington Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.colby/1220/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Looking to connect with anyone of relation to the Colby families of Hambden, Geauga County, Ohio or vicinity. The family I am referring to migrated out of Vermont to New York, then settled in Hambden Township Ohio (although I believe Thomas may have ended up in Waiverly, Bremer County, Iowa). I am most interested in connecting with descendants of the following family members: * Caleb Colby b. abt. 1777 in New Hampshire d. aft. 1850 in Ohio(?) (unknown wife) * Thomas L Colby (son of Caleb) born about 1808 in Vermont Eliza Ann Gordon (wife) born about 1813 in New York d. 1856 in Orange, Cuyahoga County, Ohio Children of Thomas and Eliza Ann Gordon: * Emily Colby b. abt 1831 in Ripley, Chautauqua, New York Thomas Chase (husband) * George Colby b. abt 1833 in New York (I believe he served in the Ohio 41st Volunteer Infantry during the civl war) * Amelia Ann Colby (my ggg grandmother) b. 28 Nov 1935 in Ripley, Chautauqua, New York d. 16 Mar 1930 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio, USA aged 94 years Daniel H. 2. >So, Colby Smith must be somehow connected to me? My ggg grandfather was Calvin Colby, who lived in Corinth, VT. Was this one of his brothers? A cousin perhaps? His father was Joseph Colby, and I have him listed as married to Rhoda Barrett. There must be a lot of "family" still in this area. I live maybe 20 or so miles from Corinth in Hartford, VT. Actually, if any of the Colby clan is going to the family reunion in August, I'd love to carpool. Surely! 3. Regarding Colby Camps. My Grandfather used to take me to the Rockford IL area in the Mid 1950s for the annual Family Picnic. There were hundreds of Colby's there in the summertime. Maybe that is what is meant by the word "camp"? 1. Re: [COLBY] Smith Colby
    2. Gordon, Smith Colby's obituary said he was born in Erie Co., New York, in 1828. He is lived in Sardinia, Erie, NY in the 1850 census (with a Flavel and Lydia Osburn, his wife Amanda and son, Edwin). In the 1855 New York State Census he lived in Franklinville, Cattaraungus, New York, with his first wife Amanda, and children, Edwin, Marvin, Fanny and Duane. As to the SHOCKEY question. All people with the surname SHOCKEY are related to each other. It was not a surname until our original ancestor immigrated to the USA in 1737 and his surname of SCHACKE was "Americanized" to SHOCKEY. He was the only known Schacke who had his name Americanized to SHOCKEY. So if your last name is Shockey you are related to all other Shockey's in the USA. I've been married to "two" different Stephen Shockey's and have traced both of them back to the original immigrant ancestor, John Christopher Shockey (AKA Johann Christoffel Schacke, who settled in Bucks Co., Pennsylvania after entering America through Philadelphia, PA). The Shockey family settled in Pennsylvania before moving into Maryland and other surrounding states in the 1700's and 1800's, now of course they are in all states. Nancy: Two questions for you. Could your Colby line have come from Pennsylvania ? Is your husband relatedto the Shockey's of Franklin Co., Pa. ? Gordon crooks

    2. The Hulda living with Smith COLBY and his wife Samantha in the 1870 census for Bremer County, Iowa, was the mother of Samantha (Robinson) Colby. The census should have said Hulda ROBINSON born in NH in about 1802. I don't know what Hulda's maiden name was. She was first married to a man with a surname of SCOTT in New Hampshire where he son Charles H. Scott was born in 1831. In 1838 in Granger, Ohio she married a Samuel ROBINSON of Vermont (b: 1785) I truly and surely wish that Smith was the child of Joseph and Hulda. For right now his parents names are unknown to me. 3. Here is the entire Obit. with the source. SOURCE: Ancestry.com, Newspapers, Nashua Reporter, Nashua, IA, 14 Aug 1929. " Ethel Colby, only daughter of Smith and Samantha Colby, was born near Waverly, 9 Feb 1865, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Maud Olney at South Elgin, IL, 6 Aug 1929. She grew to womanhood in Bremer County, moving with her parents to Pierre, SD, where she taught school. In Apr 1884 she was married to John O. Hinmon and to this union 10 children were born, two of whom preceeded her in death. In 1887 the family returned to Iowa, residing at Plainfield, Sheldon, New Hampton, Waverly and Charles City. she was a member of the Methodist Church, the Rebecca Lodge, Royal Neighbors and the American War Mothers. having one son who served in the Navy and one son in the Army during the World War. The husband died 2 Sep 1924. Survivng are the following children: Mrs. Maud Olney of Elgin, IL; Mrs. Ethel Finch of Rudd, IA; Mrs. Estelle Furuish of Detroit, MI; Everett E. and Willard W. of Charles City; Kenneth of Glenwood, Harry of Seattle, WA and John O. of Menlo Park, CA." Ethel Colby's husband, John Hinmon is my 2nd cousin one generation removed. My wife is a "Colby" so I was wondering how Ethel Colby might be connected to my wife's family.   I have a lot of info on the Hinmon's, that goes back to my Fuller family.   Bob Fuller ________________________________ From: "Nshock2@aol.com" <Nshock2@aol.com> To: colby@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, May 31, 2009 8:50:10 PM Subject: Re: [COLBY] Smith Colby This would be "my" Smith Colby family. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: RonColby41 Surnames: Colby, Miete Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.colby/1219/mb.ashx Message Board Post: WHITEFIELD, ME -- Doris E. (Colby) Miete, 91, passed away May 20, 2009, at Country Manor Nursing Home in Coopers Mills, with family by her side. Born Nov. 17, 1917, she was the first of seven children born to Chester and Marieta (Kennedy) Colby. Doris attended the Coopers Mills grammar school and graduated from Cony High School. She then went to Gorham State Teachers College in Gorham. Doris taught school in both of the one-room schoolhouses in Somerville. During World War II, she worked at Bath Iron Works, piloting training planes to teach new pilots how to fly. During the Korean War, she was a civil defense airplane spotter in Coopers Mills. In 1946 she married Olavi (Ool) Miete. They had one son, Jon. Doris went back to school at the University of Maine at Orono, then taught fourth grade at Sheldon Street Grammar School in Farmingdale until her retirement. She loved teaching and was very passionate about it. In her spare time, she took classes in oil painting, tole painting, pottery, stained glass and many other crafts. She had an insatiable hunger to learn new things. She would master one thing, then move on to something new. Her hunger to learn was as strong as her hunger to teach. Doris was more than a grandmother to her granddaughter, Jessica. She helped tremendously in raising her. Doris had a vegetable garden. Most years, her pride and joy was having peas before the Fourth of July. She loved to spend summers at the Colby camps on China and Sheepscot lakes. She would go to Pemiquid Trail and stay at Vi McCormic's camp with other teachers every summer for a couple of weeks at a time. In her spare time, she enjoyed a good game of golf with her sister, Joanne, and husband Richard. She enjoyed every season and had an activity that she enjoyed for each one. In the fall, she loved to go leaf peeping. She was a member of St. Giles Episcopal Church in Jefferson and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She devoted more than 15 years and countless hours to delivering Meals on Wheels for Senior Spectrum, based in Hallowell. She always said it was so much more than just volunteering to drop off meals. "Sometimes I might be the only person they see, and it's that smile I get when I walk through their door that makes me feel so good," she said. She always put others ahead of herself, and it gave her great satisfaction to do just that. Doris was predeceased by both her parents; brothers Rufus and Russ Colby; and a sister, Margaret Mooney. She is survived by her son, Jon A. Miete, of Whitefield; the granddaughter she raised, Jessica J. and husband Dustin Ward of Whitefield; special great-grandchildren Matthew J. Miete and Shauna M. Wade, both of Whitefield, and Morgan J. Ross of Colebrook, N.H.; sisters Jaunita Foye, of Coopers Mills, Joanne Gross and husband Richard, of Farmingdale, and Jeanne Feyler and husband Clint, of Mount Vernon; her brother, Jerre Colby and wife Carolyn, of Windsor; along with several nieces, nephews and friends. 1. [COLBY] Genealogy Alert: Geocities to close this year
    2. Ronald Colby
    3. Genealogy Alert: Geocities to close this year You may have heard that Geocities will be closing down later this year (2009). There are many genealogy sites on Geocities, and sadly, many of these sites may be lost if the webmasters don't move the sites to a new location. Yahoo is not notifying anyone about this by e-mail and many webmasters have not updated their sites in years, so--more likely than not--are not even aware the pages they have posted will be lost. You or someone you know may have genealogy information posted on a Geocities site. USGenWeb & Rootsweb also have had links to Geocities sites. Please help spread the word so genealogy websites won't be lost-- http://ancestorsearch.blogspot.com/2009/04/my-genealogy-site-is-on-geocities-now_29.html http://ancestorsearch.blogspot.com/2009/05/my-genealogy-site-is-on-geocities-now.html http://ancestorsearch.blogspot.com/2009/05/my-genealogy-site-is-on-geocities-now_05.html Ron Ronald Colby ronaldcolby@gmail.com Kearns, Utah 801-680-1317 Grandchildren don't make a man feel old; it's the knowledge that he's married to a grandmother. ~G.
