Author: RonColby41 Surnames: Colby, Hasty, Tapscott, Minnich Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.colby/1227/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Aline Cecil Tapscott Minnich 5/16/15 ~ 1/20/04 Aline was born in Hart, Michigan in 1915, one of a pair of twins, daughter of Leslie V. Colby, father, and Cecil G. (Hasty) Colby, mother. The family moved to Gervais, Oregon in the early 1920's. In 1934 she was married to Bangs C. Tapscott. They moved to Riverside, California, where they had one son, Bangs L. Tapscott. They were divorced in 1948. Aline later moved to Lancaster, California, where she met her second husband-to-be, Joseph Minnich. They were married in 1959, and moved to Susanville, California, where they bought a ranch and raised sheep. Joe died of a heart attack in 1979. Eventually, Aline moved to Woodburn, Oregon, just a few miles from Gervais where she grew up. She lived there until 2001, when she moved to Salt Lake City to be near her son and daughter-in-law. She died the evening of January 20, 2004, after a short hospital stay. She was 88 years old. Aline had a remarkable memory for friends and acquaintances, and maintained correspondence with many she hadn't seen for years. She remembered birthdays and anniversaries of all of her friends and relatives, and always sent cards and gifts. She treasured many little gifts she had received over the years, and liked to tell who had given them to her and when. She had a soft heart for animals, and especially loved wild birds. In Woodburn, and again in Salt Lake City, she maintained bird feeders and bird houses, and enjoyed watching the sparrows and others raise their families. A year or so before moving to Utah, she was adopted by a young homeless cat, whom she named Lucky . He stayed her faithful companion for the rest of her life. Aline remained independent, living in her own apartment in a retirement community, right up until her final hospital stay. She was preceded in death by her husband Joe, her twin sister Eileen Seely, her younger brother Roscoe Colby, her younger sister Flora Carmical, and her dear friend Pearl Vogt. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Bangs and Fran Tapscott, grandson Chris Tapscott and wife Julie, granddaughter Teresa Tapscott, great-granddaughter Ryley Tapscott, and her uncle Carroll Hasty in Michigan, plus many nieces, nephews, and friends. Aline requested cremation, and that request has been observed. There will be no formal funeral ceremonies. A small private memorial gathering will take place at a later time. Those wishing to honor her memory may do so by making a donation to the Audubon Society, or other organization devoted to birds or animals. Jul 11, 4:29 PM EDT Colby, Shea win Mt. Washington bike race PINKHAM NOTCH, N.H. (AP) -- Bicyclists shared the grueling road up New Hampshire's Mount Washington with a moose on Saturday for the annual Newton's Revenge race to the summit. Anthony Colby of Durango, Co., raced of sight of everyone else as he covered the 7.6-mile course in 53 minutes and 50 seconds, four minutes ahead of the second-place finisher, Christopher Hong, of Lutherville, Md. Marti Shea of Marblehead, Mass., led the women at 1:08:42, seven minutes ahead of Karen Smyers of Lincoln, Mass. A moose shared the road with the 142 cyclists, wandering onto the course at the three-mile mark. It retreated to the woods before the riders passed by. Newton's Revenge is held on the same course as the Mt. Washington Auto Road Bicycle Hillclimb which attracts 600 riders each August.

Ron and all, I found references to a "Justice J.A. Jack Colby and his family in Charleston, Coles County, Illinois in 1917. Any information on this family? I found: Sarah E. Ashby born in 1861 married J.A. Colby. Maybe she was his wife? Apparently Jack Colby's wife and children were killed in a 1917 tornado. A little ironic that today is Tuesday here in Illinois and the tornado sirens are sounding off on their weekly test at 10:00 a.m as I am typing this. I found Mary Colby in the Illinois Death Index. Maybe she was one of the Colby children killed in the tornado. COLBY MARY F/W UNK 0004857 1917-05-26 COLES CHARLESTON 17-05-28 May 26, 1917 A major tornadic thunderstorm took a 293 mile track across central parts of Illinois and Indiana. Once believed to be a single tornado, later study indicated it was likely at least 8 separate tornadoes. The first touchdown was about 20 miles southeast of Quincy. The tornadic storm tracked due east, before beginning a northeast curve near Charleston; separate tornadic storms then curved southeast from Charleston. The towns of Mattoon and Charleston bore the brunt of the tornado. Damage from this severe tornado in Mattoon was about 2.5 blocks wide and 2.5 miles long, with over 700 houses destroyed, while the Charleston portion was 600 yards wide and 1.5 miles long, with 220 homes damaged. Damage in the two towns amounted to about $2 million, in 1917 dollars. 53 people were killed in Mattoon, and 38 were killed in Charleston. Overall, 101 people in Illinois were killed during the tornado outbreak, with 638 injured.. http://www.crh.noaa.gov/ilx/?n=mto1917 Charleston, Illinois Tornado May 26, 1917 50 KILLED, 115 HURT AT CHARLESTON http://www.gendisasters.com/data1/il/tornadoes/charleston-tornado1917.htm Terre Haute, Ind., May 27.--Information received here early Sunday morning through indirect wires to Charleston are to the effect that fifty were killed and 115 or more injured in a tornado which struck that city late Saturday afternoon. Physicians from this place were rushed to Charleston to render assistance. Wires in all directions out of Charleston are down and information is meager. The bridge between Mattoon and Charleston was blown down, cutting off all rail connections between these cities. The Daily Review, Decatur, IL 27 May 1917 CHARLESTON DEATH LIST. His father was a native of New Hampshire, and his mother of Connecticut. Mr. Colby was married to Mary Ellen Bone, daughter of Robert and Nancy Bone, in 1869. To them were born three children, only one of whom, Mrs. Nellie Cherry, wife of Rev. John T. Cherry, is now living. A man of industrious habits and excellent business qualifications, Mr. Colby has been rewarded by success in his vocation, that of farming. Of a retentive memory, his fund of useful information on many subjects has been a store house from which he could draw when occasion demanded. He is quick of decision, and his opinions are valued by his neighbors. He is an interested student of State and National affairs, and seldom fails to express his sentiments at the polls. A regular attendant at Sabbath School and church, and well versed in the Scriptures, for many years he has been teacher of the Men's Bible Class. Author: RonColby41 Surnames: Colby, Bone Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.colby/1224/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Mary Ellen Colby (Mrs. Henry H. Colby) MARY ELLEN BONE COLBY (14 Mar 1848 - 30 May 1915), wife of Henry H. Colby and daughter of Robert S. and Nancy Bone, was born March 14, 1848, almost within the shadow of the church she so loved, and in the work of which she was so deeply interested, being a devoted, consecrated Superintendent of the Primary Department of the Sabbath School forty-five years. Many of the older people in the present congregation, and most of the younger ones, received their earliest Sabbath School instruction from her. She was progressive and made use of the best methods in teaching and holding the attention of her pupils. No child ever had a more loving friend or a more earnest teacher; nothing seemed too much trouble for her to do for the enjoyment or benefit of the children, and to the last days of her life she was planning for her class. Sympathetic by nature, her heart went out to any one in need of help, and many can testify that her hand obeyed the impulse of her heart in rendering prompt and substantial assistance. She was a great lover of flowers and her gifts of blossoms and plants brought cheer to many a sick room. Four little orphans were taken into her home and cared for as tenderly as her own children. Two of these died in infancy; of the other two one is now a trained nurse, and one a young farmer. She lived to serve; and in service to others she found her greatest happiness. Marilyn, I knew it was a hoax when you sent it. These e-mail scams, are not only annoying, but they are worse when they take up space on genealogy e-mail lists. There are a number of websites that will debunk most of these e-mails. http://www.hoax-slayer.com/area-code-809-scam.html http://www.hoaxbusters.org/ http://www.snopes.com/ http://www.smartcomputing.com/editorial/article.asp?article=articles/archive/l0804/47l04/47l04.asp It only takes a little reason and, common sense and a simple search of Google. Just enter a few words you see in the e-mail subject and add these words: "hoax scam email." You will be rewarded with results showing that a particular e-mail is nothing more than a scam. The worst for computer users though is that some of those e-mails that prey upon uninformed users or rely on a persons view that the world is a rosey place will sometimes contain a virus or worm if there is an attachment included.
