Mr. Colby was born April 11, 1947, in Nashua, son of the late James T. Jr. and Rosaleen C. (Mason) Colby. He grew up in Litchfield and has resided in Nashua for many years. He worked as a millwright for more than 30 years with the former Improved Machinery and his successors, Ingersoll-Rand and GL&V. Mr. Colby was an avid baseball enthusiast and Boston Red Sox fan. He coached the Nashua East Bambino League for several years. He also enjoyed model trains and coin and stamp collecting. He was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam era and was stationed aboard the USS Taussig. Mr. Colby attended Litchfield schools and graduated from Bishop Bradley High School in Manchester, class of 1966. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, James T. Colby III, who died in 1955. Survivors include his former wife, Priscilla Levy of Nashua; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Thomas J. and Holly B. Colby of Nashua, James S. Colby of Philadelphia and David A. Colby of Nashua; a brother, Arthur M. Colby of Philadelphia; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Carrie Rose Colby and Brian O'Neil of Litchfield and Marion R. He was a Sheet Metal Machinist for many years. He was instrumental in the reconstruction of Medford Armory in 1992. Known as a "jack of all trades" he continued working in the construction trades until the age of 85. He enjoyed dancing, playing cards, cruises, and winter vacationing in their mobile home in Florida for the past 16 years. Casale, 89 NORTH ANDOVER - Helen Mary (Colby) Casale, 89, of North Andover, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 20, 2007 at Massachusetts General Hospital after a short illness. She was born on May 29, 1918 in Lawrence to Wilbur and Cora (Lavigne) Colby. Helen was retired from Western Electric Co. Helen will be remembered as a wonderful wife, mother and beloved friend. She was a quiet, gentle woman, loved by all who knew her. As a mother and a wife she was totally unselfish, always putting her family before herself. She loved all of her grandchildren and was especially proud of her grandson Father Gregory Nicholas Christakos. Characteristic of her personality was her kindness to the elderly, a wonderful trait she possessed throughout her life even in her elderly years. She loved all animals, especially her dog Katy and the Boston Red Sox. One of her greatest joys was spending time in Ogunquit, Maine with her daughters. Helen was quite simply the best wife and mother in the world (and a great cook). She will be terribly missed by all who loved her and had the pleasure of knowing her. Mom - we all love you so much. Helen is survived by her beloved husband, Peter Paul Casale of North Andover with whom she recently celebrated 72 years of marriage. She also leaves her sons, Peter P. Casale Jr. and his wife Winnie of Lawrence, Frank C. Casale and his wife Barbara of Andover, Richard J. Casale of North Andover; daughters, Patricia A.Casale of North Andover, Carol H. Christakos and her husband Christos of Methuen, and her Connecticut daughter, Joan Ryan. She is also survived by her brother, Ernest Colby of Londonderry, N.H.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and her beloved little dog Katy. ARRANGEMENTS: At her request, there will be no calling hours. A memorial Mass was held at St. Michael's Church on Main Street in North Andover at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2007. I think that some of these books free on the web may disappear at some time and the links may no longer be valid.  So when you find one please pass it on so that other family history researchers can read the text while it still exists. CAPTAIN ABRAHAM COLBY. Captain John Colby was the son of Gee and grandson of Obediah, and was born in Salisbury, Mass., November 28, 1785. Gee was born December 16, 1761, and died April 21, 1822 ; he had four children —Abraham, born in 1785; Mary O., born September 13, 1787; John, born March 27,1790; and Hannah, born in June, 1810. Captain Abraham Colby married Sarah, daughter of Colonel Jonathan Smith, and had two children, viz., Mary O. and Samuel S. Captain Colby in early life learned the trade of tallow chandler, and later in life was engaged in the fishing business, sending out vessels for that purpose, and was also employed for a time in the coasting trade. In 1812 he went privateering in the ship "America;" finally retired from active business and settled down to enjoy the fruits of his labors. He was president of the Amesbury and Salisbury Savings Bank for several years, and was one of the substantial citizens of the town. He died September 15, 1865. COLBY, 38, World War veteran, who saw service for 13 years in the United States Navy, died Tuesday [19 Sep 1933] night in Edward Hines, Jr., hospital at Hines, Ill., following a prolonged illness. Taken ill two years ago, Mr. COLBY had been confined to Hines hospital for the last 18 months. Death resulted from ulcerative colitis. Since being taken to Hines hospital Mr. COLBY had submitted to six major operations and a blood transfusion. The last of the operations was performed Friday, complications developing which resulted in his death. Born in Battle Creek Dec. 8, 1894, Mr. COLBY had been a lifelong resident of Battle Creek. At the age of 18 he enlisted in the United States Navy, re-enlisting during the World War period. Following his discharge from the navy eight years ago, Mr. COLBY returned to Battle Creek and for several years was engaged in general carpentry work. For six months prior to his last illness, he had been employed as assistant millwright at the Kellogg company. Besides, his widow, Mrs. Margaret COLBY, he leaves his father, Ernest COLBY, of this city, and a brother, Otto COLBY, of Union City. Military funeral rites will be held at 4:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at Hebble's Chapel. The Rev. Stewart B. Crandell, pastor of the First Baptist church, will be the officiating pastor and burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery. She was born in Waterford, June 29, 1926, the daughter of Clyde and Doris Brown Millett. She graduated from Norway High School, class of 1944. On June 14, 1952, she married Richard Colby of Paris. Survivors include her husband; a son, Paul Colby and his wife, Bonnie, of Buckfield; two daughters, Debbie Martel and husband, Mark, of South Paris and Faith Walker and husband, George Prevendoski, of Clifton Park, N.Y.; six grandchildren, Jeffrey, Jenni and Sarah Colby, Derrick, Elaine and Ellen Martel; two great-grandchildren, Jade Martel- Bixby and Isabella Colby; brothers, Charles Millett and wife, Marie, of Norway, Hartley Millett and wife, Lucille, of Mechanic Falls and William Millett of Norway; two sisters, Helen McKay and husband, George, of North Norway and Dorothy Millett of Oxford; and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Horion was the daughter of Sterling and Germaine (Hanel) Colby. She lived in Manchester and Litchfield all her life, attending Litchfield Elementary School, graduating from Manchester Memorial High, and Becker Junior College in Worcester, MA. June was a legal secretary in Manchester at area law firms and principal legal secretary in the Manchester City Solicitors office for many years. She was a member of the Litchfield Historical Society. In her retirement, she kept up an amazing correspondence to friends and relatives, sending them Manchester and New Hampshire tourism information, recipes, and clippings of interest. Family members include: brothers Robert Colby and his wife, Priscilla, and Richard Colby and his wife, Blythe; sister, Helen Doherty and her husband, Richard; 11 nephews and nieces; 11 grandnephews and grandnieces; many loving cousins; and a dear friend, Joe Costa, of Manchester. Following the cremation, a memorial service will be scheduled at a time when distant relatives can attend. Various life insurance companies employed Jean as a secretary from her graduation from Skidmore through 1956, when she became the secretary to the president of the Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company until 1988.     2. My husband had an uncle Ira but he was from Thorpe, WI.as was most of his Colby family. My father in law was from Thorpe, graduated from high school there went into the Army Air Corp and retired as a Colonel from the U.S.Air Force in remained in Shreveport, LA afterwards. Patricia Colby
