Good stuff. Your post mentions Colby Hill and being named by Merrill Colby. I've read somewhere that it is near Meriden, NH. This tidbit of info seems to further substantiate the Merrill--Jesse--Newell connection. I read some, I can't find the source right now, Newell Colby surveyed and named the town Meriden, KS after his hometown in NH. Appears that Newell was a busy surveyor. In addition to Meriden, KS he did some work in Iowa as per the following link: http://iagenweb.org/state/places/blackhaw.htm Brooklyn Located in both Black Hawk (Spring Creek Twp.) and Benton counties. Surveyed 3 April 1856 by Newell Colby. The plat was filed 22 June 1860 with H. N. Brooks as proprietor. The town never prospered and was known only in name. In addition here are a few things about Newell Colby while he was in Kansas. This is from Cutler's History of the State of Kansas (1883) and can be found on the following link: http://www.kancoll.org/books/cutler/jefferson/jefferson-co-p20.html Meriden is located on the southwestern quarter of Section, 7, Township 10, Range 17, east It as surveyed and platted in October, 1872; and was on the land owned and occupied as a farm by Albert Owens. The first building was a railroad section house, erected in fall of 1872. The next was a small building by N. Colby, a part completed the first dwelling in November. About the same time blacksmith shop was started in a building moved from Mount Florence. The above constitute about all the improvements of 1872. http://www.kancoll.org/books/cutler/jefferson/jefferson-co-p3.html In August, 1857, a Free-state election took place for State officers and members of the Legislature. From Jefferson County, Geo. S. Hillyer was elected Senator, and Dr. S. S. Cooper and Henry Owens, representatives. A. G. Patrick, of Jefferson County, was elected Clerk of the Supreme Court. In September, a Free-state mass convention was held at Grasshopper Falls, to discuss the contest for the control of the Legislature. The members of the party from the north side of the Kansas River favored a contest, while those south opposed it. After a boisterous session it was determined to put a full ticket in the field. Immediate action was taken. The convention for Jefferson County was held the same month, at Osawkie. The Pro-slavery party put a ticket in the field headed by C. A. Buck, and the election was held in October. There is no record of the election, but the nominees of the Free-state party were elected, it is claimed, by about one hundred majority. They were A. G. Patrick, member of the Territorial Council; S. S. Cooper and Henry Owens, Representatives; Robert Ward and John Hughan, County Commissioners; J. L. Spear, Probate Judge; Ephraim Bainter, Sheriff; Henry Evans, Treasurer; John W. Day, Recorder; Jacob A. Boucher, Corner; Newell Colby, Surveyor and Lewis A. Cobb, Assessor. This was the first election in which the two parties participated to any extent, and the first at which Free-state men were elected to county offices. and the other link http://www.kancoll.org/books/cutler/jefferson/jefferson-co-p5.html At the first election of county officers, after the admission of the State, in 1861, M. R. Dutton was elected Clerk; S. C. Gephart, Register of Deeds; N. W. Taylor, Sheriff; S. S. Cooper, Treasurer; Jno. W. Day, Judge, and Newell Colby, Superintendent of Schools N. Chapman, J. P. Barnes and Allen Griffin were elected Commissioners. Hope this post wasn't too long. Not in my line that I know of but thought the list might find this interesting. from <http://www.hhpl.on.ca/GreatLakes/search/Search.asp> COLBY, JAMES L. , (Prop.), 1890 Port Huron, Nov. 17. - The new steamer launched Saturday at West Superior is named the JAMES L. COLBY. She is 265 feet long, 30 feet beam, and 22 feet hold She is calculated to run 17 miles an hour. Saginaw Courier-Herald Tuesday, November 18, 1890 . . . . . The new steamer launched Saturday at West Superior is named the JAMES L. COLBY. She is 265 feet long, 30 feet beam, and 22 feet hold She is calculated to run 17 miles an hour. Port Huron Daily Times Tuesday, November 18, 1890 AN EXCITING TRIP But a bare mention has heretofore been made of the daring passage of the St. Lawrence Rapids by the whaleback steamer J. L. COLBY last Tuesday, and the following interesting account of the trip, written by a New York Press reporter, who was aboard the boat, will not be out of place. The COLBY left Prescott at 3 p.m., drawing six feet nine inches aft and five feet six inches forward. "The COLBY was in charge of two French Canadian pilots. After experimenting with her steering gear, the pilots ordered her to go ahead. She entered the first rapids, the Galops, flying, increasing her headway eight miles an hour. As she pointed her head in to the edge of the rapids and her bow sank into the water, to an observer on the extreme stern of the vessel she seemed like a mammoth toboggan just starting down a steep chute. At the pitch in the Galops the water runs twenty miles an hour, and with undiminished speed, the COLBY plowed into it. She went through the few breakers perfectly. At the foot of the Galops a sharp swing was made from the Canadian toward the American shore. She obeyed the helm like a yacht, and old Willette, the pilot, grinned all over, saying: 'We'll make Montreal, sure.' The Iroquois Rapids were run easily. At Morrisburg the small tug ALERT steamed out and followed the COLBY the rest of the trip, so as to be near with a line in case of an accident. "At Farran's Point, six miles above the Long Sault Rapids, the water begins to run at an alarming rate of speed. A sharp turn was made at this point in a very narrow channel, but the COLBY was equal to the emergency. Then the Long Sault Rapids, a rapids nine miles in length, with breakers like ocean waves at the head, was in sight, although there is comparatively still water the rest of the distance. This is the first of the really dangerous rapids. The breakers ahead look impassable, but she headed into them. Down hill she plunged. There was not a roll, not a shake, only a gentle undulation as she tossed through the waves. On she went, in and out, from point to point, running so close to the shores at times that it seemed as though she must strike the bank, but the pilot was ready at every turn and brought the steamer around with seemingly marvelous skill. She grated bottom twice near the head of Barnhart's Island, but it was only a rub on the gravel bottom. Pilot Lafrance stepped aboard the tug to follow the COLBY, leaving Willette in charge. The steamer once more started ahead, and began the most perilous part of her voyage, shooting the Coteau, Cedar, Split Rock and Cascade Rapids. "At the Coteau Rapids the engine was stopped, as these and following rapids are extremely shallow, the bottom is full of sharp rocks and the danger is doubled. She jammed into the first rapid with terrific speed and was within ten feet of the rocky shoal that stood far out in the water. She grated the bottom four times, once hard enough to give her a perceptible shake, but she passed through Coteau Rapids safely. Cedar Rapids are six miles below, and the water runs like mad the whole distance. "Just after leaving the Coteau, the cord of the signal whistle broke. Everybody aboard realized the danger, and everyone was gazing intently at Willette, who stood firmly clasping the wheel, and on whole looked neither to right nor left. The signals to the engineer were made by the big whistle, and also repeated by men stationed at convenient points. The steamer grated the bottom a dozen times between the two rapids. Next she entered the Cedar. The waves here are so choppy that the vessel was given a most peculiar rolling motion, but she did not strike, and went on to the most dangerous rapid yet, the Split Rock. Every person on board held his breath. The entrance to these rapids is a narrow passageway between two masses of rock, the sight of which is enough to apall a passenger on a steamer that is running with great speed seemingly directly toward them. "Captain McDougall stood immovable, but great beads of perspiration broke out upon his forehead. If the COLBY was wrecked, the attempt to get a fresh water whaleback to the ocean would not be made again. If she passed through safely more would follow, and every trade on the ocean would be open to this unique craft. On, on she rushed, gaining speed at every second, until she was in the entrance, and with fearful speed dashed through. There were long breaths of relief, but the Cascades were right ahead, the last rapid to pass on the perilous trip. Through the Cascades she went in rapid time, and was safe on Lake St. Louis. "As the old pilot left the ship's side and boarded the tug, a shout went up like that of a small army and the whistle blew as it never did before. For nearly an hour no one had spoken above a whisper except the captain as he gave orders. It was the most daring and crafty piece of piloting that has ever taken place in the rapids. The COLBY is the first screw steamer that has ever attempted to run them, and great credit should be given, not only to those who risked their lives to bring her through, but to the company who placed their property at such a risk." Detroit Free Press Tues., June 23, 1891

I think you guys are correct on Jesse's father being Merrill since I think the last child of Jesse & Lydia is MERRILL not MERRIT F. Do you think that Merrill, Jesse's father could have come to Plainfield from Salisbury, MA - son of Jacob & Sarah Merrill Colby? The Merrill Colby who married Elizabeth Colby daughter of Valentine [HOW APPROPRIATE!] and Hannah Kimball Colby? The ages fit the adult ages in those census reports. I believe this is the same Jesse Colby that is listed on the 1830 US Census for Plainfield, NH on page 291. That census indicates one adult male, 1 adult female, and one 1 year old boy. That 1 yr old would be Newell Colby. Also, on the 1830 census there is a Merrill Colby listed who has the proper age to possibly be Jesse's father. I have no birth records, but I'm fairly certain this is the case. I've been able to complete a decent papertrail on my line -- Newell Colby and wife Cynthia Ticknor Wood -- all the way to present day. Among other things it should be noted that Cynthia Ticknor Wood is a descendant of MAYFLOWER passengers Stephen Hopkins and daughter Constance Hopkins. In addition the Ticknor line can be traced to early Mass colony (King Philip's War). Willing to share/compare notes. Ej I checked all the census for Merrill Colby in Plainfield, NH and found the following. 1800 males under 10: 1 26 to 44: 1 Females under 10: 3 26 to 44: 1 1810 Males under 10: 2 10 to 15: 1 26 to 44: 1 Females under 10: 1 10 to 15: 1 16 to 25: 2 26 to 44: 1 1820 Males to 10: 1 10 to 16: 1 16 to 18: 1 16 to 26: 3 over 45: 1 Females to 10: 2 10 to 16: 1 16 to 26: 1 26 to 45: 2 over 45: 1 1830 Males 15 to 20: 1 20 to 30: 1 50 to 60: 1 Females 15 to 20: 2 20 to 30: 1 30 to 40: 1 50 to 60: 1 1840 Males 40 to 50: 1 70 to 80: 1 Females 70 to 80: 1 Jesse is also in the 1830 and 1840 census. Which leads me to believe you are correct in that Merrill is probably Jesse's father. Next question is, who married Merrill and who are all these children? Ron ----- Original Message ----- From: "EJ & Chris Marohn" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, February 05, 2005 4:23 AM Subject: Re: [COLBY] Jesse Colby/Lydia Scott I have some help, and would be interested where you got the wedding date info for Jesse/Lydia. Co. Chicago, 1885 p. 85 O. C. Colby was born in Danville, Vt., Dec. 8, 1837, a son of Ira and Mary Colby. His educational advantages were limited, but being ambitious he obtained a good commercial education. He came West with his parents in September, 1840. Being a cripple he was unable to work on the farm, and in 1858 went into the store of O. W. Owens to learn the jeweler's trade. He remained with Mr. Owens a year, and then engaged in business for himself, combining drugs with jewelry. In 1867 he went to Central Illinois, and remained there and in Southern Missouri till 1877, when he returned to McHenry, and in company with his brother opened a general store, having a branch store in Nunda. In 1882 they divided the stock, O. C. taking the store in Nunda. He carries a stock of $15,000 or $18,000, and has an annual sale of about $30,000. Mr. Colby was married June 12, 1864, to Emma E., daughter of W. and A. Colby. They have five children - Bert W., Lule E., Carl O., Earl H., and Ernest E. ! Politically Mr. Colby is a Republican. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity. He and his family are members of the Methodist Episcopal church. (Ed. note: Mr. Colby died November 16, 1916, per his obituary)
I have some help, and would be interested where you got the wedding date info for Jesse/Lydia.
