James Singer Colby b. Mar 1822 married Eliza L Nelson b. abt 1826 New York I have a death date of 28 Jul 1893 for Eliza. James married abt 1883 Harett (Harriett) L Van Horn b. Aug 1844. This marriage date comes form the 1900 census which says they have been married 17 years. Question: Is this dod for Eliza correct, did James and Eliza get divorced? why the overlapping dates. I think this is someone else. The birthdate for him on that census looks more like 1825 than 1822. Of course, looking for another James S. Maybe this will help - maybe it is someone else. George James Colby born in Boston 28 Aug.1839 had been a member of Ellsworths Zouaves. There was a Charles Colby whose photo is in a Zouave group photo in one of the two Vol. Andreas History of Chicago. It was a photo of Ellsworth Zouaves cadets, maybe pre-civil war. I got this info 4th or 5th hand so offer it for what ever help it might be. Ronald Colby <[email protected]> wrote: I was ask to forward this to the list. Interesting. I suppose that between the 1850 & 1860 census Eliza, Harris & Isaac died. But where did Demetrius & Wellington come from? They were old enough to have been on the 1850 census. And, who is James? Too old to be Joel & Polly's child! Then, on the 1870 there is Jasper age 22 - where was he in 1860 or 1850? At least Alice is the same on 1860 & 1870!! I think "Wellington" & "Jasper W." are the same person. "Harris" & "Demetrius" seem to have both been born in 1844. But we need both of them to make the count of 8 children that Polly claimed. Is it possible that "Joel" is another child of Nicholas & Sarah Howe Colby??? They were supposed to have had 12 children and I only know of 11. Could it be that simple???
