Hi Karie, Thank you for yours. Will be posting my findings, as I go along, on the Colby site. However my main aim is to put the research into some kind of printed private publication as I already have over 500 photos of Colby portaits, churches, monuments, mansions and estates. I always think that illustrations make genealogical writing a little more digestible! It can be a rather dry subject when one is confronted with endless variations of the same name! I also have much research to do on the early American Colbys. Just come across yet another branch of the family from Great Hale in England. The honorable trade of Blacksmith seems to have been this branchs' particular profession. The records start in 1751/2 with STEPHEN COLBY, blacksmith & Ann his wife followed by records of a further 10 Colbys who were blacksmiths right up until the late 19th C. The skill must have been handed down from father to son. A second shoot took up the craft of shoemaking. NON OMNIS FRANGAR (motto from the Coat of Arms of Colby of Great Torrington, Devon, England. Some what apt, as I believe it means 'Dont be discouraged by everything,! But, no doubt, I stand to be corrected by some Latin scholar.! Best wishes Tristan Colby Salazar.
Hello Kate, Thanks for yours. Am musing on the early Colbys as the sun sets on the English landscape, a somewhat rare occurence if you are familiar with the British weather! I have just now discovered The Irish branch of Colbys! Where will it end I wonder. The first Colby arrived in Ireland in 1399. He was a very learned priest ( unlikely then, by the very nature of his chosen profession, that he would have had any children, mais on ne sait jamais!) His name was THOMAS DE COLBY and due to his eloquence and mastery of many languages was noticed by King Richard II, who promoted him to the see of Lismore and Waterford in Ireland. He died in 1406 and as Archbishop was buried in his own cathedral. ( yet another place I will have to visit to see if his tomb is still there!) Hopefully one day I shall be able to fly to the States and give a lecture and slide show to the Colby family gathering! Wouldn't that be nice to to meet all the various Colbys. Am not sure what the collective noun for a mass of Colbys would be- Perhaps a Collation of Colbys! Best regards Tristan [email protected]
Hi Karie. Thanks for yours and your interest. If you keep checking the Colby site I will be posting snippets as I go along in my research. As you can imagine, there's a mountain of info out there! I really need to visit the Colby places in England as there are many mounments, houses, churches and lands connected to the Family that all need photographing and recording. DUM SPIRO SPERO ( while I breath I hope) One of the Colby family mottoes! Best regards Tristan
Kate, I really am incredibly grateful for your long e-mail regarding the arrival of one Colby in the New World. The last wills are amazing documents too. If you would be so kind as to send me your address I will send you a cast of the Colby coat of arms I moulded from the a wall monument to Captain Charles Colby, as a thankyou. He, poor fellow was killed by a Tiger in India in 1852 whilst serving in the British Army and was a member of the Colbys of South Wales. Despite a few exceptions, many of the various branches of Colby employ on their coat of arms 3 escallop shells surmounted with a crest depicting a mailed arm holding a broken dagger. Your research will proove a valuable addition to the mass of Colby papers I have in my possession. Quite extraordinary that there is a record of Colbys arriving in America at such an early juncture. The family certainly has its fair share of important historical figures. There is even one Colonel Colby who as head of the Pembrokeshire militia, stopped the only incursion of British soil by an invading foreign force (French) since the Norman conquest in the 11th C. Here is another reference to the very early family members taken from Charlton's History of Whitby, p. 180. "About 1227 WALTER DE COLLEBY, influenced by Divine piety, at the request of his wife Margaret, gives to the monks of St Hylde of Middlesland 3 acres of land in Colleby field and other things. MARGARET DE COLLEBY at the time of her widowhood continues the grant her late husband, Walter de Ribbestein, gave in the town of Coleby. In another place HUGH DE COLLEBY is a witness" Any more goodies regarding the family would be greatly appreciated. Tristan. [email protected]

Hi Kate, Thank you for your message. It would be most kind, if you could supply me with any details regarding the Lincolnshire Colbys. I am trying at present to corrolate as much information as possible so as to track the spread of the family from Norfolk. As you might be aware I am writing a small (actually not so small!) illustrated history and would be more than delighted to share my findings with you. Isn't it interesting that there is a small village by the name of Colby only 15 miles from where the first Colbys are recorded? Of course many family names are place patronymic in origin. People often took their names from the town they lived in. I look forward to hearing from you. Tristan Salazar [email protected]

Hello Christina, I was very interested to note your posting regarding research into the Colby name. I am currently trying to write an illustrated history of the family which, as I am sure you are aware, is one of considerable age. As far as I can gather, the first Colbys ( the name was to begin with de Colbi, meaning from the place called Colbi ) originally settled in Norfolk (England) at a place called Cawston, about 10 miles north East of the City of Norwich . On the A140 North of Norwich sits the village of Colby which would seem likely to have taken its name from the family. or perhaps vice versa.! The ealiest recorded Colby was one ROBERT DE COLBI and his brothers WARINE and SIMON who were alive in 1199. Here is an extract from Blomefield:- "At the survey Coleby was a berewic, belonged to Cawston, and the whole continued with that till Will. de Burgh severed it by granting half the town and half the advowson from Cawston, which in 1199 ROBERT DE COLBI held with WARINE DE COLBI and SIMON DE COLBI, his brothers. The Colbys' manor here, called Oldstead Hall, descended in that family from ROBERT DE COLEBI." Exciting stuff, Eh? So here we have the first 3 Colbys alive in the 12th Century, nearly one thousand years ago, and not only that but the name of the first Colby Manor House- OLDSTEAD HALL!! I am planning a trip with camera to see if there still a house there and of course to visit Colby Village and the surrounding countryside in search of our earliest recorded ancestors. It would seem that the 6 main branches of the family are, in chronological order:- Colby of Norfolk , England 12th century. Colby of Yorkshire, England 13th century. The Yorkshire spelling of the name was COLBYE during the 17th Century. Colby of Suffolk, England 16th century. Colby of Massacheusetts, U.S.A 17th century. Colby of South Wales, Great Britain. 17th century. There is some speculation that this branch of the family is an off shoot from the Yorkshire Colbys. Colby of Great Torrrington, Devon 18th century. I am sure that there are many more branches of the family yet to be discovered. I would be most interested if you could kindly tell me about your branch and perhaps be so kind as to let me have any family trees pertaining to your branch. I live in Cirencester, Gloucestershire and am descended from the South Wales Colbys. Look forward to hearing and sharing information. Tristan Colby Salazar. [email protected]

Hi Tina - My name is Katie Colby - I live in Middletown, New Jersey. I am also researching my Colby line... I have it as far back as the early 1800's with Jeremiah S. Colby. But that is where I am stuck. I know he was born her ein the States in New Hampshire. He was born in 1821 He married Mary Baldwin who was horn in Maine in 1829. They both appear on the 1850 census in Medford, Middlesex County, Massachusettes. I know the "Colby" Homestead in the States is in Amesbury Massachussetts. The Colby-Macy House still stands and it is the site of reunions of the entire COLBY CLAN every so often. I have all this information and the information on Anthony Colby who came to the States from England and settled in Amesbury in the 1600s'. If you access the Colby Clan Association Website, you can see what I am relating to. PLEASE email me back - keep me posted and I will go thru my information and see if I can get anyone traced back to Leeds. My significant other - over here in the States - was born in Southend on Sea any where near you? He is returning home on May 9th to visit him mom who is not well at this time.
