I found my Smith COLBY line in the 1855 Franklinville, Cattaraugus, New York State census. This is located very close to Holland and Sardinia, Erie, New York. The family was listed as: Smith Colby, head, age 27, born in Erie Co., New York Amanda Colby, wife, age 28, born in Montgomery Co., New York Edwin Colby, son, age 5, born in Erie Co., New York Marvin Colby, son, age 4, born in Erie Co., New York Fannie ? Colby, daughter, age 2, born in Cattaraugus Co., New York Duane Colby, son, age 1 month (as of June 14, 1855) born in Cattaraugus Co., NY At least Smith and Marvin moved to Ogle Co., ILL before 1859. The wife Amanda and all her children EXCEPT Marvin, never appear in another census. Smith Colby remarried to Samantha Robinson on April 4, 1959 in Ogle Co., ILL (the marriage index list his name as CALBY). By the middle of 1860 Smith and Samantha were living in Douglas, Bremmer Co., Iowa. Marvin is left behind in Ogle, ILL with a family by the name of William and Theresa KNIGHT. Marvin lived there until his death at the County Poor Farm on Dec 23, 1903. As the mother of four it is impossible for me to imagine myself leaving one of my children behind as I moved off to a new life, with a new spouse in another state. Is there anyway to find out if there was some type of disease or epidemic that "may" have killed his entire family in Cattaraugus Co., NY or in Ogle Co., Illinois between 1856 to 1859? Marilyn -- I apologize for the delay in replying -- we have been out of pocket much of the last six weeks, and your message got buried in a "pending" folder. The Abraham Colby who died in a house fire in Madison on 23 Dec 1852 was the son of Hubbard Colby (1767-1826). Hubbard was the younger brother of my 4th great grandfather, Col(e)man Colby. This Abraham Colby was a prominent citizen of Eaton and was quite well to do. He served in the War of 1812, and later in the New Hampshire state legislature. He had nine children, two of whom were indeed named George and Charles. This is a collateral line for me, and I have done no independent research on it, so I cannot tell you whether any of Abraham's children went to Chicago or seved in the Civil War from Illinois. My great grandfather, Guy Irving Colby, removed to Chicago from Lawrence, Massachusetts in 1887 or 1888. He subsequently moved to Springfield, Illinois in 1895. However, there were many other Colby families who came to Illinois in the latter half of the 19th century. The 1860 census shows 42 Colby households in the state (15 in Cook County), and the 1870 census shows 93 (25 in Cook County). The Illinois Civil War Project website yields 37 hits on the Colby surname (but none with the names of George or Charles). I have done very little research on Illinois Colbys whose arrival preceded that of my great grandfather. Sorry I cannot be of more help. Guy I. JRN, Thank you so much for taking the time to look at all the headstones. I have been trying for years to find out who my gg-grandfathers parents were. He was named Smith Colby and was born in Erie Co., NY, in 1828. In 1850 he and an Amanda and Edwin Colby were living with a family in Sardinia named Flavel and Lydia OSBURN (I have never found Flavel and Lydia in any census past 1850). I don't know if Amanda was his wife and Edwin his child or if they were brothers and sister. Edwin was young enough to be a child of Smith and Amanda if they were married to each other. He moved to Ogle Co., Illinois by 1859, where he married my gg-grandmother, and then to Iowa from there. I have been checking census records from 1840 and 1830 and the Peter Colby you listed in Protection Cemetery was one of the Colby men who could have been his father as he had a son under 5 years old in the 1830 NY census. Most of the other Colby men in those census years with sons the correct age have been researched or had wills listing their childrens names and my Smith Colby was not listed in their wills. Thank You again for taking the time to go to the cemetery and find all that wonderful information! Nancy Colby Shockey

Frankly, Nancy, I would be very much surprised if there will be any building at all, tho I haven't been down that hill in 35 or 40 years. I will look for an OSBURN headstone, however. ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Tuesday, September 06, 2005 6:37 PM Subject: Re: [COLBY] Protection Cemetery JRN, If you make it to Protection Cemetery and if they have an office could you check to see if there is a Lydia Osburn buried there? I think she may be the mother of my Smith COLBY and that could be her surname in the 1850 census from a remarriage. Thanks. Well! It looks to me like it has to be: 1. son of John & Susanna Davis Colby born 28 May 1782 in Newton, New Hampshire 2. son of Zacceus & Mary Calfe Colby born 6 Oct 1784 in Pembrok, New Hampshire 3. son of Archelaus & Jemima Johnson Colby born about 1786 in Dunbarton, New Hampshire I think most likely #3 because Dunbarton is the closest to Warner. Anyone have any more information or ideas? I have been in contact or had reports of several of our Colby relatives that live in Louisiana or Alabama. All are doing pretty good except for some frayed nerves. Brand-new message board has been created for discussion on Katrina. http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=hurricanekatrina2005&m=1 Ron Colby
