Hi, I am new to the board and hoping someone can help fill in some blanks. I am looking for information on my great-grandfather to see where/if he fits into the Anthony Colby line. His name was Herbert Forrest Colby born 1863 (in Mass.??), died July 2, 1929 Springfield, Mass. He married Abbie Partridge Lewis (born Sept 17, 1871) on Feb 8, 1890. Family stories tell me that he was a captain of a ship out of Boston. They had many children: John Eaton (b Dec 5, 1890 d Aug 1891) Ethel (b Nov 30, 1891 d Sept 1892) Jane Lewis aka June (b Nov 4, 1892) Annora Stearns aka Nora (b Nov 4, 1894) Ann Catherine aka Cathy (b April 25, 1896) Walter Jeffards (b Sept 22, 1897) Frederique Augustus aka Freddy (b Aug 31, 1900) Samuel Francis (my Grandfather) (b Jan 11, 1903) Herbert Forrest Jr. (b Feb 19, 1904) George Carlton (b Feb 28, 1906) Sometime between 1906 & 1910 he moved to Vancouver, Canada (due to some sort of legal trouble?) and changed his last name to Lacy. He sent for Abbie who went to Canada with just 4 of her 8 children (George, Sam, Cathy & June) and left the others behind ("farmed out"). He started a refrigeration business in Vancouver and they had 3 more children: Robert Warren Lacy (b Jul 31, 1910) Abbie Rose Lacy (b Oct 25, 1911 or 1912) Baby boy stillborn Nov 20, 1913 Around 1929 Herbert & Abbie returned to the US and he passed away on July 2, 1929 in Springfield, MA. Abbie lived with her children until her death on March 7, 1947. This information has been graciously written down for our family by one of Herbert & Abbie's granddaughters who had the good fortune to hear this history first-hand from her grandmother and she has the original address book that her grandmother wrote important dates in. If anyone can help me find any further information on Herbert Forrest Colby, it would be greatly appreciated. Spencer D. Colby Saskatoon, Canada

Hi Ron-They had four children-two boys, two girls (1840 census for Macoupin Co.) I found the names of Charles, b. abt 1831, William, b. abt 1833, Mary b. 1835, Sarah, b. abt 1837( 1850 census for Macoupin Co, ILL) The census was taken in November. Charlotte Sylvia Mudge Colby died in 1850, no doubt earlier in the year. Some genealogists claim that Simeon Colby died on the California trail in 1852, although I have not found that fact. Interestingly, there is a Charles Colby, age 39, b. N.Y. in the 1870 census for San Francisco. Did he go to California with his father? I don't know what happened to Sarah. I noticed that Mary Colby Updike named her two daughters with John T. Laws, Charlotte for her mother and Sarah for her sister. Mary Colby Updike was my husband's great-grandmother. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ronald Colby" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, February 12, 2006 7:33 PM Subject: Re: [COLBY] Regarding Civil War veterans > Hi Marilyn > > For Simeon Colby and Charlotte > how many children and names do you have for them? > > Ron > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Marilyn Woodrich" <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Sent: Sunday, February 12, 2006 7:19 PM > Subject: [COLBY] Regarding Civil War veterans > > > William M.
