Bob, thank you This brings up a big question on the children you have listed for James Colby and Catherine Floyd. The first thing to mention is that Weis has James that married a Catherine as the son of James B. Colby and Elizabeth Godfrey. James and Elizabeth were married 26 Feb 1793. He lists all these children; Charles down to Mary E. as their children. This seems to be inaccurate because James Colby would have been born abt 1793/4 and Catherine abt 1793/4, this would have made them only 16 when they started to have this family, a little young for those days. Weis also says that James B. Colby that married Elizabeth Godfrey and James Bryant Colby who married Susannah Story as one in the same. And here again lies another problem. If James B. Colby and James Bryant Colby are one in the same, why did James Bryant Colby have two son's named James, one born in 1793 and one in 1804, unless the older one died young. So this makes me question if the son James b. 1793 survived. This would lead someone to believe that James Colby married to Catherine Floyd did not belong in the above line. So my question to you is what is your sources to support that James Colby b. 1784 and Catherine Floyd belong to William Davis Colby and Elizabeth Straw. I notice you also have two more daughters, Betsey and Sally for them. The 1790 census for William D. Colby Hopkinton, NH lists 2 males over 16; 5 males under 16 and 3 females. Note all of James Colby and Catherine's children were born in New London, NH. SOURCE: Index to births, early to 1900 New Hampshire. Registrar of Vital Statistics. Hopes in getting this family straight. Inquiring minds would like to know.. There is Alma J. Colby, daughter of George Joseph Lunt Colby & Arabella Thompson who was born 19 Apr 1848, Newbury, Massachusetts. But, she is certainly not a close relative, so what she would have been doing living with them is beyond me!!! The Alma J. on the 1850 shows as born in Maine. Who is the Charles Knight? Also, on the 1870 there is a Flavilla E. Colby age 5 - who then does she belong too? It appears as if she could be Alma J.'s daughter. Did they just take in stray kids???? Maybe, call them "Colby" if they did not come with a name??? Illinois State Archives Databases http://www.sos.state.il.us/departments/archives/databases.html He knows thousands of Ill.'s Civil War soldiers February 20, 2006 BY ANDREW HERRMANN Staff Reporter Advertisement Illinois State Archives director David Joens says, "You can't write the history of the Civil War without Illinois.'' And, he might add, not without some help from Fred Delap, either. Key players from the Prairie State include Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant. Although there were no Civil War battles on Illinois soil, the state provided 150 infantry regiments, 17 cavalry regiments and 10 artillery batteries for the war. And Delap? In looking over some of my older entries after getting an inquiry and updated information on the descendants of Samuel Silver and Judith Colby. It brings up a question of which Judith Colby married Samuel Silver. Samuel Silver b. 27 Jul 1730 m 6 Nov 1750 Judith Colby But which Judith Colby did he marry. We have two Judith Colby in this time frame and either is a candidate. Judith Colby b. 2 Jul 1725 d/o Isaac Colby and Hannah Getchell Judith Colby b. 9 Mar 1733 d/o Timothy Colby and Hannah Heath. Samuel Silver and Judith Colby had the following children: Martha Silver b. 27 Nov 1751 Mary Silver b. 4 Jul 1754 Anna Silver b. 7 Jul 1755 John Silver b. 22 Dec 1763 Daniel Silver b. Oct 15 1765 d. Feb 27 1772 Samuel Silver b. Aug 12 1767 Timothy Silver b. May 12 1769 Abner Silver b. 5 Apr 1771 Daniel Silver b. Mar 7 1773 Joshua Silver b. Nov 17, 1774 Samson Silver b. Jun 29 1777 Sarah Silver b. Mar 3 1779 Weis has that Samuel Silver m Judith Colby b. 1725 d/o Isaac The book "The Silver family lineage of Anna, Charles, Mary and Elisabeth Silver and their children : with biographical and historical notes" by Arthur E. Silver, Upper Montclair, N.J.: unknown, 1966, 81 pgs. Says that Samuel Silver m Judith Colby b. Jul 19 1733 d/o Isaac Colby and Hannah. In this book the dob for Judith is in error for their daughter was born 2 Jul 1725. Here are some facts that I noted. (1) If Judith Colby b. 2 Jul 1725 married Samuel Silver, she would have been 54 years old when their last daughter Sarah was born, probable but not likely. If Judith Colby b. 9 Mar 1733 was the mother she would have been 46 when Sarah was born more probable and much more likely. (2) the naming patterns for their children don't fit the normal trend of those days of naming children after parents, grandparents etc.. None of their children were named Isaac nor does Isaac appear in other generations. You will note that they have a Timothy, John and some of the other names that fit. Any ideas?? Ron

His name was Herbert Forrest Colby born 1863 (in Mass.??), died July 2, 1929 Springfield, Mass. He married Abbie Partridge Lewis (born Sept 17, 1871) on Feb 8, 1890. Family stories tell me that he was a captain of a ship out of Boston. They had many children: John Eaton (b Dec 5, 1890 d Aug 1891) Ethel (b Nov 30, 1891 d Sept 1892) Jane Lewis aka June (b Nov 4, 1892) Annora Stearns aka Nora (b Nov 4, 1894) Ann Catherine aka Cathy (b April 25, 1896) Walter Jeffards (b Sept 22, 1897) Frederique Augustus aka Freddy (b Aug 31, 1900) Samuel Francis (my Grandfather) (b Jan 11, 1903) Herbert Forrest Jr. (b Feb 19, 1904) George Carlton (b Feb 28, 1906) Sometime between 1906 & 1910 he moved to Vancouver, Canada (due to some sort of legal trouble?) and changed his last name to Lacy. He sent for Abbie who went to Canada with just 4 of her 8 children (George, Sam, Cathy & June) and left the others behind ("farmed out"). He started a refrigeration business in Vancouver and they had 3 more children: Robert Warren Lacy (b Jul 31, 1910) Abbie Rose Lacy (b Oct 25, 1911 or 1912) Baby boy stillborn Nov 20, 1913 Around 1929 Herbert & Abbie returned to the US and he passed away on July 2, 1929 in Springfield, MA. Abbie lived with her children until her death on March 7, 1947. This information has been graciously written down for our family by one of Herbert & Abbie's granddaughters who had the good fortune to hear this history first-hand from her grandmother and she has the original address book that her grandmother wrote important dates in. If anyone can help me find any further information on Herbert Forrest Colby, it would be greatly appreciated. Spencer D.
