Is this William Raines Colby the son of Abraham Colby and Sally Lane? Ron The New York Times August 4, 1888 New York City, New York A ROGUE OF MANY PARTS. PECULIAR RECORD OF A CRIMINAL NOW IN SAN FRANCISCO. CHICAGO, Aug. 3. -- To William Raines Colby, formerly a medium in this city, belongs, according to the Chicago police, the distinction of having successfully posed at various times as Spiritualist, Baptist minister, gambler, and train robber. Colby is now in San Francisco, where it was arranged to arrest him to-day on a charge of robbing the mails. Last Week the Secret Service officers got on his track, and interviewed detectives here who told them all they knew of Colby, and through a friend discovered that gentleman's San Francisco address. The Federal officers left for San Francisco on Sunday night, and if they have not already captured the fugitive are expected to get him to-day. Three years ago Colby was playing the medium at 2,626 Stat-street, in this city. He was extremely successful. His séances were crowded, and he was making a big income. His manner was prepossessing, and in private life he appeared an estimable citizen, who paid much attention to his wife and two children. While Colby was thus prospering L. B. Ind, and armory detective, took rooms in the same house and succeeded in getting on intimate terms with the medium, who proved to have more worldly tastes than anybody suspected. This excited Ind's curiosity, and he wrote for information to some of the places in which Colby told him he had lived. Replies came saying that no Colby had ever lived in the towns in question. Ind thereupon sent out photographs of his friend and they proved more effective. In every case the picture was recognized as that of "Parson Raines." "An interesting story," said Ind to-day, "came from Hearne Junction, Texas, about Colby, or 'Parson Raines.' In 1875 'Parson Raines' was a Baptist preacher in Hearne Junction. He was very active in religious work and was especially prominent as a leader in revival meetings. On Jan 21, 1875, he was leading a revival when, in the midst of the services, a mail train which stopped for dinner pulled in. 'Parson Raines' asked an assistant to keep the meeting going for a few minutes, and, after the mail clerk had left the car to go to his dinner, broke into the car and stole $3,000 in registered packages. To accomplish this feat he had previously scraped acquaintance with the mail clerk, John F. Lipphard, now editor of the American Flag, New-York City, and induced him, as a precautionary measure, to use a lock on his car door which he (Raines) furnished him. It was not long before suspicion pointed to Raines, and he was arrested. The proofs of his guilt were absolutely convincing and he was sentenced to five years in the Huntsville Penitentiary. He only served two years, as the President was deceived into pardoning him on the plea that Raines was in the last stages of consumption." While Ind had been making his investigation Colby, the medium, took to gambling. One day he won $4,000, sold his household effects, and disappeared, after acknowledging to Ind that he had been concerned in the Texas incident. Ind traced him to San Francisco and learned that he was flourishing as a medium in that city. In his researches Ind accidentally discovered, as short time ago, that Raines was guilty of mail robberies previous to the one for which he was punished Thereupon he put the United States officers on the medium's track.

Contact your local library and see if they have microfilm of old newspapers; if there is a Family History Center near you, they might also have old newspapers on microfilm; or they could order it for you from the main center in Utah. You could also contact the cemetery and see if they have any old information on file for your ancestors that may be helpful. You could also check Ancestry.com and see if they have any NH newspaper databases; you'd have to pay to view them, but you wouldn't have to leave home! I hope this has been helpful. Good luck! I have Colby's, a last name derived from my Charbonneau's, who emigrated from Canada, probably in the early to middle 1800's. The moved from Quebec Province. Many of my Colby's/Charbonneaus changed their name as they settled in Holyoke, South Hadley, Springfield, Chicopee, MA. I have lots more, but will begin with the information above,. Nancy Curry

USCIS Establishes Genealogy Program WASHINGTON — Customers can now turn to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) for help in researching their family’s immigration history through the agency’s new Genealogy Program. USCIS maintains historical records documenting the arrival and naturalization of millions of immigrants who arrived in the United States since the late 1800s or and naturalized between 1906 and 1956. Until today, the process to request these records was handled through a Freedom of Information Act / Privacy Act (FOIA) request. “In many cases USCIS is the only government agency that has certain historical records that provide the missing link which genealogists or family historians need,” said Jonathan “Jock” Scharfen, USCIS’ Acting Director. The agency anticipates interest in genealogy to continue to grow. In the past four years alone, USCIS received more than 40,000 FOIA requests for historical records. The new genealogy program will create a dedicated queue for genealogists, historians and others seeking genealogical and historical records and reference services that generally require no FOIA expertise. As a result, USCIS will provide more timely responses to requests for records of deceased individuals. Individuals may submit genealogy records requests by using the new forms, G-1041 -/Genealogy Index Search Request/, and G-1041A - /Genealogy Records Request/. Both forms are available on the new USCIS Genealogy Program page at: http://www.uscis.gov/genealogy. The fees include: * Genealogy Index Search - $20 * Copy of a File on Microfilm - $20 * Copy of a Textual File Copy - $35.
