I did find "William W. Carter", miner, in the 1880 directory, but I am not certain it's him. I have seen no indications of a middle initial in other records. I am not sure when he moved to the US. I was unable to find him in the 1880 US census, so he may not have arrived by that time. He was also not in the 1881 England census, so he had probably left Yorkshire by then. He was definitely in Yorkshire 21 April 1879 registering the death of his wife. On that document he was listed as a lead smelter, though he had also worked as a lead miner, according to earlier census records. I don't know how long it might have taken William to decide to emigrate after his wife's death, settle his three surviving children with other local family, then head out for the US. I don't know if it was a direct trip to Leadville, or a circuitous route. Do you know when the 1880 directory would have actually been published? Was the information likely to have been gathered in 1879, for publication in early 1880? How frequently were directories published for Leadville? Thanks again for these rich resources.
