She also took her food and things and sat with her when she was not well which I gather was frequent. I can only imagine how very hard it would have been to be middle-class in Leadville let alone that poor. She said that her brothers used to collect tailing from the coal wagons as they passed by and if they got a good amount would take some over to Baby Doe to help keep her warm. Apparently a lot of old-timers did what they could for her but times were pretty hard for everyone. For those that have not see where Baby Doe lived out her latter days it is a very tiny one room shack, no more than boards with papers creating a bit of insulation.
