    3. How wonderful to have this great tool to find our families!! Thank you to those that did this task for all of us. Be careful when you look at it and look at all spellings of a name and those that sound something like what you are looking for. The WELLS "boys" Thomas and Joseph are listed as WILLS and Jason B. HALL is listed as James B. Hall so there may be other names that were not listed correctly on the original records. We must remember that the census takers wrote in long hand and some spelled the names as best they could as they marched up and down the mountains trying to find everyone. I am always amazed when I stop to think of the hardships people were under as they did tasks we now take for granted. Also, thanks to your sensible advice, I went back to re-spell devers in as many different ways as I could imagine, but found nothing. Believe it or not, that is what I hoped for! My mystery man, John H.Devers, bootmaker could not have been there until 1871 and only shows up in the 1883 city directory. At least I now know there was not a family of bootmakers already established in Leadville. If anyone has come across 'Our Jack' between 1871, when he was drummed out of the US Cavalry, and 1883 in Leadville, I would be eternally grateful. A later sighting would not be amiss either. BTW since serving as a census representative earlier this year, I do NOT take such a task for granted, even today! Getting the truth is not easy. I wonder about Pikes and Rocherfellow, retired merchants from Prussia at the ages of 20 and 21 in 1870? See my brick wall at: http://members.home.net/jahbartlett/genealogy.htm -- Best regards, John mailto:[email protected]
