Cloud City Chronicles >From The Herald Democrat Dec. 10, 1950 ·Haircut Price Advanced in Leadville Shops The cost of a haircut in Leadville barber shops advanced twenty-five cents on December 1st. V.C. Williams, secretary of Leadville Barbers Local No.513, stated that the price increase is necessitated by ever increasing costs of supplies and materials and is consistent with the price increase in other communities and cities in Colorado. The prices effective in Leadville shops are $1.25 for a haircut; 75 cents for a shave with a haircut; $1 for a shave without a haircut. The Leadville barber shops are under the jurisdiction of the Fifth Judicial District which also embraces the barber shops in Climax, Dillon, Minturn and Eagle. ·More Toys Needed at Fire Station Toy Shop Fire Marshal Joe Plute has issued an appeal to Leadville residents for more broken or discarded toys which firemen can repair for distribution among Lake county's less fortunate and underprivileged children in order to keep alive their faith in Santa Claus this Christmas season. The members of Leadville's fire department are hard at work each day putting new parts into broken toys, painting them bright and cheerful colors and concentrating on making some of Leadville's children happy when Christmas rolls around. This is an annual project undertaken by the fire department but it requires more than the efforts of the firemen to make it a success. ·Cars Straddled Sidewalk on West 8th Street Apparently in the belief that there was a connecting road between West 8th and 9th streets on Pine Street, the drivers of two cars this morning found themselves suddenly at the bottom of a hill with their cars straddling the sidewalk at the beginning of the 200 block on West 8th street. The two cars, one a Nash sedan with a Summit county license, the other owned and driven by an unidentified Pueblo salesman, were hauled back up the hill and safely onto the road again shortly before noon by a wrecker crew of the Hockett Motor company. Driving west on 9th street, the drivers noticed that Pine Street south had been plowed-only to the alley, however. Both made left turns but on reaching the alley between 8th and 9th streets were confronted with a slope so steep that they were unable to stop the vehicles. Both cars slid to the bottom of the slope, coming to a rest side by side astride the sidewalk with the front wheels aloft some distance from the ground. Apparently no damage was sustained by either car. ·Leadville Really Having Some Snow This December "Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow" might well be Leadville's theme song at the present time as the "white stuff" continues to fall, converting the area into a "Marshmallow World in Winter". Since sunday, it was learned today from the local US Weather Bureau, about 18 inches of new snow has fallen, contributing to 25 inches of accumulated snow on the ground at the present time. It continued to snow today, going into its second twenty-four hour period without a let-up. It was also reported from the weather bureau station that up to December 13 last year there was no snow on the ground except in spots. Only 3 1/2 inches of snow fell throughout the entire month of December last year. It will be recalled by many that a year ago the opening of the Cooper Hill winter Sports area was postponed from the scheduled date of December 2 until the weekend prior to Christmas because of insufficient snow. Just a comment... That alley between 8th St and 9th St. happened to be the alley that we had to drive up all the time for get to my in laws house and the kids could not play with their sleds in the alley as then the cars couldn't pull the climb from 8th to 9th St. Many a time I slid down it in the car hoping I was going to get to 8th St. before I went sideways or hit a garage. Oh, for the winters that I do not miss in Leadville.
