Peter was a Gold Miner, b. ca April 1846-Ohio, living in Malta, Lake County, in 1880 with wife Elena, b. ca 1849 Kansas and three children: Oscar Wallace Pitz, b. June 16, 1873 Nebraska; Walter Milo Pitz, b. ca. November 1876, Iowa; and Franklin (Fred) W. Pitz, b. ca 1879, Kansas. Found Peter Pitz in 1900 in Pueblo, with a second wife named Mary, b. ca. Feb 1854, Sweeden, and three step-children who were all born in New Mexico: Joseph Smith, b. Dec 1883; Fred Smith, b. Aug 1885, and Louisa Smith, b. January 1888. The Denver Public Library GAR member listing has one Peter Pitz, GAR 45, who enlisted in Milwaulkie, WI, and served in the 9th Wisconsin Infantry from September 20, 1861 to December 3, 1864. Believe GAR Post No. 45 is located in Smith County, Kansas. Second wife, Mrs. Mary J. Pitz is found living alone in Colorado Springs from 1902-1906, but not present in the 1910 census. Eldest son Oscar Wallace Pitz, b. June 16, 1873 married Maude M. Smith 11 Sept 1899 in Central City. Maude had one daughter named Gertrude Ede from a previous marriage to John Ede,which she had married on 20 March 1890 in Gilpin County. Oscar and Maude moved to Denver, Colorado, where they died in 1955 and 1957 respectively and are buried at Crown Hill Cemetery in Wheat Ridge. In the May 17, 1921 obituary published in the Denver Post, for Mrs. Harriet Reno (widow of Thomas Thornton Reno) of Arvada,Colorado, Oscar W. Pitz is referred to as her foster son living at 3436 W. Moncrieff Place in Denver. Mrs. Reno (Harriet Wilson) arrived in Colorado in 1863; lived first in Golden with first husband Lemuel Flowers (1818-1871), an Overland Stage Coach Manager; and secondly married Thomas Thornton Reno and they lived in Arvada. The second son Walter Milo Pitz, b. Nov 1875, ore hauler, is living in Anaconda, Teller, County in 1900 with his wife of two years, named Lizzie, b June 1869, Scotland. By 1910 Walter and Lizzie are living in Bisbee, Cochise, Arizona, working as an Inn Keeper. In the household is a sister Emily Smitley, 34-CO, widow; and a young married couple referred to as a niece and nephew, married one year named John Larson, 23-IA and Rhoda Larson, 18-CO. By 1920 Walter Pitz is employed as a ship boiler maker in San Francisco, California, with wife Lizzie; and lodgers John Larson, 34-IL, Rhoda Larson, 27-CO, and Gladys Larson, age 10-AZ. The California Death Index shows Walter Milo Pitz died November 26, 1947 in Santa Clara, California. The third son Franklin (Fred W.) Pitz, b. ca 1879, Kansas died in 1902 in Denver, Colorado per the "William P. Horan Burial Index" reference resource index at The Denver Public Library. Since two of the sons have the middle initial "W" and it is known that Oscar's middle name is Wallace, could this be the maiden name of first wife Elena? Is there anyone researching this family?
