Their names were George MAXWELL and Henry NILES,and they were reportedly fighting over a gambling debt. It sounds like it was QUITE a fight... a la Mike Tyson. This was scanned from an original issue of an 1887 newspaper, and you can see it online here: http://theoldentimes.com/ldvlfight87co.html I hope it's of interest! Hi Gail. That one doesn't ring a bell with me at all. The Jewish Synagogue had a circular stained glass window in the front featuring a star of David, and the roof had one or more of those round air vents. I believe that a house has been built on the site one, with a large yard which includes the corner lot opposite St. George's Church. I don't remember just when the synagogue was torn down. Maybe the party who runs the site can give that information.
Hi Ed, Yes, I remember Minnette Miller, very much so..and I guess now I remember that she was of the Jewish faith but had forgotten. Also, I had met Sally too but would not have remembered to connect any names until you mentioned it. Guess that is what happens when you are wearing blinders.... I know where St. George's was but don't remember the Jewish building and that is also like I was trying to remember the big building behind us when we lived in Ken McElroy's park on 2nd St. We lived down on the very end..was that Pine and 2nd???? and behind us was this big huge building that was vacated and was a bar and dance hall, I think. There was an alley and this building and then Vienna Grocery was in front of it but up from it, as I used to walk across the field and go in the back door of the grocery. It was always vandalized and the police were always in it at night playing hide and seek with the vandals.. I want to say it was Ice something or Crystal Palace...maybe that was it...sound familiar?? Gail
Hello All. Can anyone recommend where I can locate the enumeration district # for 1910 Census for 401 Helen Street in Leadville ? Thanks, Denise Perhay Minnesota
Hi Gail. The address for the site is obviously someone's home. The Mitchells lived on East 8th street, just about 208, maybe 210. It was that big blue house with the pillars on the porch. The Jewish cemetery has recently been restored. It is at the southern end of Evergreen, and across the road from the Catholic Cemetery, but I don't think you can get in from that end. There are quite a number of graves in that cemetery. Do you remember Minnet Miller? She used to run the social services for the county. Her father was the last rabbi for the congregation in Leadville. The Millers lived on East 7th just below where my Mom lives. The house is now an "Antique" place. The building that is pictured on the site was down on West 4th Street, in the second hundred block, facing north, almost across the street from St. George's church. To the best of my recollection the Millers were the only family left from that community when I was growing up. It was just Minnet and her sister Sally. Sally later got married and moved away.
Hi, I found this web site interesting and didn't realize that there was this much of a Jewish community in Leadville and most of all, I don't remember the buildings. http://www.jewishleadville.org/index.html Also, while you are in the site, take a look at the obituaries....very interesting... Gosh, wasn't 208 W. 8th St. about where the Mitchell's lived?? Ed, can you remember the address? Gail Meyer Kilgore Casa Grande, Arizona I believe that friends are quiet angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly.
Hi Cory, My grandparents were in Leadville at the same time as your ggrandparents. I don't know about school records; but the local library has good city directories for that period. In fact it appeard hat the library had excellent records of the history of Leadville. Jean
With respect to Cory's inquiry St. Mary's School (Roman Catholic) started in 1878/79. It did, eventually include twelve grades, but when that occurred, I do not know. If there are any records they would be at the office in the parish office of the Leadville Catholic Community at 609 Poplar Street, Leadville, CO 80461. There were several public schools in the Leadville area during the early years, some were in the camps near the town, Adalaide Park, Oro City, etc, and in the town, on Carbinate Hill. None of these exist today. I know the last one burned down and I would presume the records were all destroyed. The existance of records from the public schools for the years in which you are looking is doubtful, but should they exist, the best source would be the Supt. of Schools Office. I don't know the address, but assume it can be located using the web and the yellow pages, and/or the white pages. I wish you the best of luck in your search
Cory, What school did your Grandmother go to? If she went to the Catholic school, the Catholic church has those records and with a donation to the church, will look her up for you. I cannot answer about public school since none of my relatives went to public school. I hope this helps. Good luck! Hi Kathy Egan. There was a McMorrow family who operated a furniture store in Leadville for a number of years in the 1930/1950 period. Don't know what happened to them after that. Ed Kelly
My great-grandfather Dennis Leahy immigrated from County Cork, Ireland to Ontario, Canada, in 1825, then to Albany, New York and was naturalized there in 1846, and then out to California. I don't recall any mention of Colorado on that side of the family.
