The President Mine was in the St. Kevin mining district and had two shafts. In 1887 they were shipping ore and getting 25 to 35 ounces. [Doesn't seem like a lot of ounces considering they shipped 75 tons to the concentrator???] They had a crew of 15 men. Gail
Teri, The only O'Rourke that I knew in Leadville was John and Inez O'Rourke and they have both passed away, John in 1978 and Inez after 1980. I have no idea about his lineage except he was one of Leadville's old-timers. I am not sure if I ever heard that they had children so I am really of no help to you. I don't even show Thomas as being buried in Leadville. Gail
Teri, I wanted to forward this to the list as some of your surnames are being or have been searched. My ggrandfather Sinon (Simon) O'Rourke was in Leadville from about 1880 until 1895. We believe other members of his family were in the area also. One in particular a Thomas O'Rourke who was in the area abt. 1870 and died there about Aug- 1929. Just before his death it said in his obit he held the office of Justice of the Peace. It also said in his obit that he had part ownership of the president mine. I have his death certificate, hoping it would lists parents or place of birth (no luck). I am basically trying to find out for sure if he is one of ours. I am willing to share all and any information that I have on Leadville, If I could just fine a bit more on him or any of the O'Rourkes in Leadville. I think that there should be more information on someone who spent more that half his life in Leadville. Can you help me??? Half your luck, Albert, and may your research in Leadville be successful! If you see mention of the James Griffiths family (in Leadville from about 1878 until some time before 1900) then do tell me! I have collected a few photographs of Leadville - interesting! Compares in a strange way with the mining towns that evolved here in Australia at about the same time. Lois
Mary, Nothing in my book...sorry! Gail
Has anyone in their Lake County Reference Books come across any references to any of my COSE miners? Would likely be after 1878 through 1920. If they are COSE and in Colorado at that time, they are mine! Thanks for any tips or names of books I can obtain through my Library exchange program. Mary Cospalmer
I am sure about George Hooper Rickard. His body was never recovered after the cave in, but is listed at Evergreen Cemetery in Leadville. I have no info on a Louie Rickard so I don't know if he is related. The children of Elizabeth Ann and George Hooper Rickard were: George Hooper Rickard Jr. (My Grandfather) Elizabeth Rickard Jennie Rickard Joseph Rickard William Rickard Richard Rickard Could you please tell me about the notations on the Rickard brothers and Rickard Shaft. I have two more notations, one on Ruben and several on T. A. Rickard and several on Thomas Rickard. Gail

Hello, My name is Albert Rickard. My family comes from Leadville and I am seeking info on them. I am planning a trip to Leadville on Sept. 8Th to find records of births, marriages, deaths etc. I am seeking any advice on where to look and who to talk to etc. I am especially interested on the date of death of my great grandmother Elizabeth Ann Rickard, and the mine in which a shaft was named after my Great Grandfather George Hooper Rickard known as Rickards shaft. He died in a cave in on May 24th 1909. thanks, Albert
As some of you know I have been collecting Colorado history books, especially if they contain history of Lake County. There was one book that I kept putting off buying until last fall. I am very sorry I did not purchase it earlier! If you are interested in the mining history of the area from the first strike at Granite (it was the county seat of Lake for a few years) to - California Gulch - to the mining at Climax this is a wonderful book to read. The title is "Leadville A miner's Epic" by Stephen W. Voynick, and it is published by Mountain Press, Missoula MT. It is a paperback edition and I purchased it for about $10 either from the Colorado Historical Society, in Denver, or the Book Mine in Leadville (Book Mine, (719) 486-2866, 502 Harrison Ave, Leadville, CO 80461) but I am sure it can be purchased through other sources. Gail, When you were in Leadville, where did you purchase the Griswald books? I would like to look at the index prior to purchasing them and thought I could do so when I go. Thanks for your great list!! MJ Watt [email protected]
Should that be so, I'd be delighted if someone could have a look for my James Griffiths, probably in Leadville in 1885. The below info was found on the CO Archive site. Does anyone know if an alphabetical index was made for Lake County for the 1885 CO Census? 1885 Colorado Census The 1885 Colorado Census was a special state census done in conjunction with the federal government. As such it is different from the other federal censuses. For instance, the Soundex system does not apply to this census. Also, there is a completely separate alphabetical extraction of names which includes age, race, gender, nativity, and marital status. The alphabetical extraction is organized by county and thereunder alphabetically by first letter of last name. Of the 40 counties that were organized at the time, an alphabetical extraction was done for 20. The extractions do not refer to a sheet and a page number in the census which sometimes makes it difficult for researchers to cross reference a name. If a researcher is looking to see if a person lived in a certain county in 1885 or needs only basic information about an individual, then the 1885 alphabetical extraction is useful and can be quicker to search than the actual census.
