Bernard who had Miner's Card # 6053 issued in Sept 1914. Others listed are Douglas, Harry L, Jean, Joe, and John. My O'Brien & Moynahan ancestors were in Leadville before moving on to Cripple Creek in about 1895.Perhaps the Bernards did the same. Hope this helps a bit. Al O'Brien

    3. As always looking for new info on: JOSEPH H. WELLS- mine owner and County Clerk for three terms. Years in Lake County:1860-1882, he moved to Villa Grove in 1882 to his ranch but maintained business ties in the county until his death in 1898. MOLLY (Mary) ROACH WELLS, his wife. - I have a bounty out for a picture of her at one of the social gatherings she helped hostess in Leadville in the 1870-80 period, or any picture of her at all in Leadville. Also anything on her family. THOMAS SMITH WELLS - JOSEPH'S older brother, well known mine owner and businessman. Years with business in Lake County: 1860-1906. He made $25,000 in 1860 in California Gulch and more later. KEITH HALL, brother-in-law of Thomas and Joseph, businessman and land owner in Malta. About 1860-?? He was the first or one of the first butchers in the area. Later he moved to Saguache County and was well known there. I am interested in the Lake County information. I have all the history book information on them - looking for something that is different if it is available. 2. Gail, Please, could I have a look-up? I have two children listed on the 1880 census with their father and mother (Timothy and Catherine Harrington) but they are not listed as being in school or at home etc. THere is just a dash. I think this might have meant that they died that year. Could you see if you have their names anywhere: Maggie (age 8 in 1880) and Kallie Harrington (age 2). They were Catholic if that helps. Thanks. Dianna Wickern P.S. I love any Harrington info......

    2. Mary Cosepalmer
    3. Hi! Mary Cosepalmer sounding off! I am still interested in all the COSE information in Lake County! My COSE families migrated from England to PA, NJ, Michigan and then Leadville Colorado. They were miners in England and US until my Great Uncle and my Grandfather homesteaded in Rio Blanco and Garfield Counties of Colorado then they became farmers. My COSE lines migrated to Colorado and they loved it there and have made it home since. My Great Uncle Alex Alexander COSE died in a mining accident in January 1912 in Leadville. Shouldn't there be information about that somewhere ? His widow and her children moved to California and there are lots of his descendants there! I would be ever so grateful for any help! Also, I do own the 1880 Census from LDS library and would be willing to do Colorado lookups. ----- Original Message ----- From: Gail Meyer Kilgore <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, October 05, 2001 6:27 PM Subject: [COLAKE] ROLL CALL!! > How about a roll call to wake everyone up? Hi Gail and all, I have about given up on my Leadville connection. I think my man must have been a rolling stone. He was listed (at least one of the same name was) in the city directory in 1883 but by the time of the 1885 census went missing again. 1883 Leadville Colorado City Directory lists: John H DEVERS, shoemaker residence 422 E 9th Leadville, Co Earlier the 1880 US Census CO Nederland township Boulder County lists John H. DEVERS on page 344 (but in 1870 there was no Devers family meaning that this guy was a transient like most). Before that I know that my greatgrandfather was drummed out of the US Cavalry for desertion in 1871 but am only surmising (hoping?) that he was the same man as the above. You can read the whole story of my brickwall at: http://members.home.net/jahbartlett/genealogy.htm I won't hold my breath but maybe someone new has joined the list and has just the info I want... 1. [COLAKE] Laurila in Leadville
    2. Gail and others, I forgot to mention that the pictures that I have were taken by a P. Carlson photography studio in Leadville. Does anyone know if records of this studio are available from any source? The pictures are probably early 1900's. I would like to be able to identify all of the people, if possible. Thank you! Carole

    1. Re: [COLAKE] Laurila in Leadville
    2. Gail, How exciting! Several things have fallen into place since I received the name Laurila in a letter yesterday from my new-found relatives in Finland. Laurila is the married name for the Tilda Rapakko I had written to this list about previously. From your note, I would understand that Tilda was not the mother of Oscar's daughter Viva - is that correct? In Ellis Island records of 1906, I find Oscar and Tilda Laurila with baby "Lila" and a "Tenna" Laurila, age 10. Would Tenna possibly be Viva? Laila visited my mother in Duluth, Minnesota a few times when I was little, but I couldn't remember her last name, and didn't know how she fit into the family history. I thought only that my mother had referred to her as a cousin. My mother's mother (Tilda's sister, Emma Rapakko) died very young (age 29 in 1907) in Leadville and my mother and two little brothers were sent back to Finland where they lived until 1916. As a result, I think that her ties to the Rapakko-Laurila's in the States were somewhat weakened. But I do recall Laila visiting a few times and I thought she had come from Colorado. Since yesterday I found record of Laila's death 29 August 1989 in San Mateo, California. Also, apparently Oscar died in California, though he is buried in Leadville. Would you have record of the other children in the family? Was there a boy named Edwin, born in 1907? I received a picture yesterday thought to be Tilda. Do you, by chance, have pictures of the family that you would be willing to share? This picture shows her with a young adult lady and two children, possibly Laila and ?. I am desperately searching for a picture of my grandmother Emma (Tilda's sister) - so I am trying to determine if the young woman in this picture could be her, with the children being my mother and her brother at 3 and 1 years of age. Perhaps I should scan it to you to see if you can identify the people? Thank you so much for the information that you sent. I appreciate whatever help you can give!
