She also took her food and things and sat with her when she was not well which I gather was frequent. I can only imagine how very hard it would have been to be middle-class in Leadville let alone that poor. She said that her brothers used to collect tailing from the coal wagons as they passed by and if they got a good amount would take some over to Baby Doe to help keep her warm. Apparently a lot of old-timers did what they could for her but times were pretty hard for everyone. For those that have not see where Baby Doe lived out her latter days it is a very tiny one room shack, no more than boards with papers creating a bit of insulation. No way you could be warm with out a good fire. My bedroom is larger that the house. ~~C Sullivan Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Here is the book that looked to be fairly comprehensive that I wondered if the library contained: History of Leadville and Lake County, Colorado: From Mountain Solitude to Metropolis by Don L. Griswold and Jean Harvey Griswold (Hardcover - Sep 1996). It was over $100, so it didn't seem like a likely buy for me. I hope to visit Leadville next August when in Denver, but until then, am trying to gather what we can from afar. Thanks again! We have 25,000 digitized pages of our old newspapers online and are working on two more orders now. Keep checking back. Anderson. His wife was Maria Johnson Anderson. We actually seek pictures of Hilder and/or his family, as we are related, and have no pics. If anyone knows of a Leadville or Lake County historian who may be reached by e-mail, we would be most grateful, having searched for this on the Web to no avail. Or if anyone knows of any digital archives that have saloon pics of Leadville during this period, a link would be appreciated. We did see one showing at least one of the saloons on Chestnut Street.
