I volunteer at the LDS church and they pay for a subscription to Genline. If you are interested just email me and I will help you in learning how to read the records. I don't read Swedish but have learned to read a lot of it. They put the original church records on there. We also started a Swedish club in Denver and they have CD's on Swedish records. I ended up finding my family on it and going to Sweden to meet them. It is a wonderful source of records. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I think they would have had to have current information, much as a modern day phone directory. They were published yearly except for, I think, 1896 and one other year. I am not at work right now and I am not sure. Anyway, good night and please email me at work tomorrow. Janice Fox Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I did find "William W. Carter", miner, in the 1880 directory, but I am not certain it's him. I have seen no indications of a middle initial in other records. I am not sure when he moved to the US. I was unable to find him in the 1880 US census, so he may not have arrived by that time. He was also not in the 1881 England census, so he had probably left Yorkshire by then. He was definitely in Yorkshire 21 April 1879 registering the death of his wife. On that document he was listed as a lead smelter, though he had also worked as a lead miner, according to earlier census records. I don't know how long it might have taken William to decide to emigrate after his wife's death, settle his three surviving children with other local family, then head out for the US. I don't know if it was a direct trip to Leadville, or a circuitous route. Do you know when the 1880 directory would have actually been published? Was the information likely to have been gathered in 1879, for publication in early 1880? How frequently were directories published for Leadville? Thanks again for these rich resources. Author: coatta1 Surnames: CARTER Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.colorado.counties.lake/993/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm looking for information about William CARTER, died 16 September, 1884, aged 36 years, in Leadville, and buried in Evergreen Cemetery. I found the following transcript of a monumental inscription in Arkengarthdale, North Yorkshire, England: In remembrance of Jane CARTER wife of William CARTER of Booze Bank, Arkendale, who d 20 Apr 1879 aged 30yrs. Also Phillis Margaret their dau who d in infancy. 4 line verse. Also of Phillis Margaret their dau who d at the age of 3yrs. Also of the above William CARTER who d at Leauville USA on 16 Sep 1884 aged 36yrs & was interred in the Evergreen Cemetery, affectionate husband & dutiful son, a faithful brother. The last record that I had of William before this date was created when he registered the death of his wife, Jane Carter nee Thompson. She died 20 April 1879, at the age of 30. Her occupation is listed as "wife of William Carter a Lead Smelter,' and her death was registered by the widower, William Carter. Her place of death and William's residence was Booze, Arkendale. She died of phthisis, a contemporary term for tuberculosis. So some time between April 1879 and Sept 1884, William lodged his 3 surviving children with family and emigrated to the United States. Any suggestions of where to look for further information would be most welcome. Thanks. Louise Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
