    1. [COLAKE] directory lookup?
    2. John Bartlett
    3. Hi All, Could someone please tell me if trade directories are extant for Nederland and Leadville between 1871 and say 1890? My g-g-grandfather was discharged from the 8th Regiment of US Cavalry stationed at Fort Union, New Mexico in March 1871. He was a bootmaker named John H Devers, b. abt 1847 in County Clare, Ireland. The 1880 US Census CO for Nederland township lists John H. DEVERS on page 344. In 1883 the Leadville Colorado City Directory lists: John H DEVERS, shoemaker residence 422 e 9th Leadville, Co If this is the same man as my lad I would like to know where he got to between 1871 when he was given his walking papers and 1880, and what happened to him after that. Dare I hope for sks to look him up? He had a father, Edward Devers last heard of in Benton Harbor MI and may have started walking north to him. Thanks and Merry Christmas to you all. 3. Cloud City Chronicles >From The Herald Democrat Dec. 10, 1950 ·Haircut Price Advanced in Leadville Shops The cost of a haircut in Leadville barber shops advanced twenty-five cents on December 1st. V.C. Williams, secretary of Leadville Barbers Local No.513, stated that the price increase is necessitated by ever increasing costs of supplies and materials and is consistent with the price increase in other communities and cities in Colorado. The prices effective in Leadville shops are $1.25 for a haircut; 75 cents for a shave with a haircut; $1 for a shave without a haircut. The Leadville barber shops are under the jurisdiction of the Fifth Judicial District which also embraces the barber shops in Climax, Dillon, Minturn and Eagle. ·More Toys Needed at Fire Station Toy Shop Fire Marshal Joe Plute has issued an appeal to Leadville residents for more broken or discarded toys which firemen can repair for distribution among Lake county's less fortunate and underprivileged children in order to keep alive their faith in Santa Claus this Christmas season. The members of Leadville's fire department are hard at work each day putting new parts into broken toys, painting them bright and cheerful colors and concentrating on making some of Leadville's children happy when Christmas rolls around. This is an annual project undertaken by the fire department but it requires more than the efforts of the firemen to make it a success. ·Cars Straddled Sidewalk on West 8th Street Apparently in the belief that there was a connecting road between West 8th and 9th streets on Pine Street, the drivers of two cars this morning found themselves suddenly at the bottom of a hill with their cars straddling the sidewalk at the beginning of the 200 block on West 8th street. The two cars, one a Nash sedan with a Summit county license, the other owned and driven by an unidentified Pueblo salesman, were hauled back up the hill and safely onto the road again shortly before noon by a wrecker crew of the Hockett Motor company. Driving west on 9th street, the drivers noticed that Pine Street south had been plowed-only to the alley, however. Both made left turns but on reaching the alley between 8th and 9th streets were confronted with a slope so steep that they were unable to stop the vehicles. Both cars slid to the bottom of the slope, coming to a rest side by side astride the sidewalk with the front wheels aloft some distance from the ground. Apparently no damage was sustained by either car. ·Leadville Really Having Some Snow This December "Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow" might well be Leadville's theme song at the present time as the "white stuff" continues to fall, converting the area into a "Marshmallow World in Winter". Since sunday, it was learned today from the local US Weather Bureau, about 18 inches of new snow has fallen, contributing to 25 inches of accumulated snow on the ground at the present time. It continued to snow today, going into its second twenty-four hour period without a let-up. It was also reported from the weather bureau station that up to December 13 last year there was no snow on the ground except in spots. Only 3 1/2 inches of snow fell throughout the entire month of December last year. It will be recalled by many that a year ago the opening of the Cooper Hill winter Sports area was postponed from the scheduled date of December 2 until the weekend prior to Christmas because of insufficient snow. Just a comment... That alley between 8th St and 9th St. happened to be the alley that we had to drive up all the time for get to my in laws house and the kids could not play with their sleds in the alley as then the cars couldn't pull the climb from 8th to 9th St. Many a time I slid down it in the car hoping I was going to get to 8th St. before I went sideways or hit a garage. Oh, for the winters that I do not miss in Leadville. I have it on a word processor and I need to know how to get the HTML. Is it wishful thinking or is there a place where I can show this form and get an HTML for it? I've tried doing this (I'm new at this) and I'm having trouble with spaces. The chart looks great, but doesn't come upon the shown page correctly. I need the answer in simple language, too, if posssible. I've been scanning sites and I keep making a mess. Thanks, Lynn

    3. I read with interest your posting. My ancestors were also from County Wicklow and then went to Cleator Moor and then Leadville. James Doyle, Elizabeth Burns, and Susan Burns were listed as godparents to my family members with the surnames of NOLAN, MARR, and McCALL. All three surnames are buried in the Leadville cemetery. Do my Doyle, and Burns/Byrnes relate to any of your family members? 3. Hi Gary Just a long shot, but I have a Sarah Hills married to James W. Crouse in Illinois in 1864. Sarah needs confirmation for my connection but I know James, at least, ended up in Colorado (d. Colorado <1880). I assume they both (Sarah and James made the trip to Colorado. I know close to nothing about Sarah and her family at this point. As often happens, she may have been accompanied to Colorado by other Hills in her family who I have not identified. Let me know if you see any connections. As far as location in Colorado goes, I have this Crouse line (represented by James' son Harry) near Colorado Springs (Black Forest), Cannon City, Texas Creek, Howard, and Salida through 1900. Nothing in Lake County as far as I know. I also have Paynes but none carrying that name to Colorado (Alcy Payne [b. 1742 VA] married Heflin. Her granddaughter, Aisly, ended up in Colorado married to a Rice.). 3. Hi Jack, Here's what I know about my Doyles: Michael Doyle was from County Wicklow, Ireland. Michael was born around 1845-50. He immigrated to the Cleator Moor area of England in the late 1860's. I don't know much about him then like if he immigrated to England by himself or with his family from Wicklow. In 1871 he married Mary Burns. They had 8 children: Mary, born 1870 in Frizington England Thomas, born 1873 in Frizington England, died in Denver in 1965. Sarah, born 1875 in Frizington England, died in Leadville in 1902 James, born in 1877 in Frizington England, died in Leadville in 1901 Maggie, born 1878 in Frizington England, died in Leadville. Peter, born in 1880 in Frizington England, died in California John, born in 1884 in Frizington England, died in Leadville in 1946 Michael Jr., born in 1888 in Leadville, died in Missouri. Thomas is my grandfather and Michael Sr. is my great grandfather. I went to Leadville in 1996 and when I was at St. Joseph's Cemetary I found the Doyle gravesite that you speak of with the skull and crossbones on the tombstone--very impressive! I thought that those were my Doyles but then later on in the day I found "my" Doyles in a different part of the cemetary. I found and interesting note on the skull and crossbones tombstone under a rock. It was dated 7/28/1995. It was written by Steven Patrick Albert, the great great grandson of Patrick Edward Doyle. He said that Patrick and Hannah Doyle had 9 kids. The eldest son was Edward Patrick Doyle and his wife was Bridget. Their eldest son was Edward Duane Doyle and his wife was Ruby. He had just arrived in Colombia and all his stuff was still packed. I sent him a packet of information that I had on my Doyles but I never heard from Steven again. I don't know if he got the package or what. I have seen the other Doyles in the Leadville Business directories and in the different U. S. census. I can't help feel that we are related somehow but if we are it goes back to England. I have seen many Leadville families in the 1881 English census in Cumberland, Cleator Moor parish.
