    3. genny, can you tell me what county and census you found this william b. coker back in 1877. reason i ask is because i had not seen any coker lines except my line and they had not move to kansas till 1880's. I am more then curious then anything i did find one coker back further name john coker but for get what coutny but think it was ford kansas. my line of coker's settled in ness hodgeman and pawnee county when first moving here. there are to william cokers in 1870 except one is william L. coker in cherokee county and a william coker one in shawnee county would suggest if your doing searches for william coker leave out middle initial you will get more hits by doing so but keep in mind age and looking at censuses. Also check out morgan county illinoise make sure your william was born in kansas. not saying he wasnt but alot of time people marked the state they lived in on theses censuses if they didnt know where they were born. Reason i say check out morgan county illinois there was a william coker who bought land in 1818 in morgan county illinois. seems some coker like mine use to follow land terrritory openings claybourne and dennis coker moved to illinoise when illinoise was not a state bought roughly 8000 acreas this william i am talking about also bought in 1818...also bought 8000 acreas to begin with. so their may be some connection to that becomming a state thing because kansas didnt become a state till 1862 roughly until then kansas territory use to cover parts of oklahoma colorado nebraska eventually the size of kansas shrank to present size when becomming a state. That may help broaden your scope of search. Sorry dont have much on william coker but do know that theones around jacksonville illinose morgan county were related the william their i dont know about yet because hard to find information on those records that old but suspect may have been an uncle or cousin to claybourne and dennis coker. I also suggest what information you do have on this william b. coker you go to county seat there. and have county ! clerk allow you to search the actuall records when i went to county seat for mine we found land buys and sells and even marriage certificates from 1850 to 1900's i could not find a lot of the records i was looking for because they have became part of an old fort museum piece now and hard to obtain those because they are protected. You might run into same problem. If you cant find counties dating back that far go back to history maps and look at what town may have held records for the region you been looking in meaning this. example: pawnee ness and hodgeman counties were not counties but larned kansas was not a town then either for me to find census i went to history and it told me what town would hold those records mine would switch between chase kansas and garden city kansas or now know as barton county. most of this is suggest in helping you find your records and i would skan census back past your william cokers 1877 date during 1850 census started showing whole family names so it might be possible to attach it to the father of william coker. the other is check kansas census in odd years kansas territory use to run census like 1875 1877 <-- example but a fact as well most did it in every 5 years between federal census. it may help to look at it that way. hope my babbling helps you some . gary eugene coker ----- Original Message ----- From: Ginny Sand Sent: Sunday, May 12, 2002 4:25 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [Coker] Still checking Hey to all the Coker's out there. I have just started working on the descendants for the Coker side of my family and still digging for information on my grandfathers family William B. Coker; born 1877 in Monmouth, Kansas. He died December 11, 1937. He married Minnie Reed around 1903 in Berryton, Ks. Any information on his past or parents or brothers and sister would be appreciated. I believe from old censes records his father may have been born some where in Missouri. ==== COKER Mailing List ==== http://www.egroups.com/group/Coker/ SUBSCRIBE: [email protected] ============================== To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237Get more from the Web.
