    1. Re: [Coker] Joseph Coker
    2. I've done some further research on this family. I've come to some conclusions but more research is needed to accept it as true. The IGI shows a marriage record between Joseph B. COKER and Mary HOLCOMB on 10 OCT 1861 in Shelby Co., AL. I have transcribed the 1870 Census as follows. It contains some additional information not shown in Dwight's posting: 1870 U.S. Census - Alabama - Shelby Co. - Beat 8 Twp. - Columbiana P.O. Roll: M593-39 - Page 469 - Image 21 of 26 (ancestry.com) - 13 JUN 1870 132/132 COKER, Joseph - 30 M W - Farmer - [blank]/$350 - AL - Unable to read and write Mary - 36 F W - Keeping House - SC - Unable to read and write Samuel - 16 M W - Works on farm - AL - Attended School Frnklin - 14 M W - Works on Farm - AL - Unable to read and write (NOTE: It does not show that he attended school) William - 13 M W - Works on Farm - Al - Attended School Rachel - 7 F W - AL - Attended School Lenard (sic) - 4 M W - AL Nora (sic) - 2 M (sic) W - AL Joseph - 2 months M W - AL McCLANAHAN, Leticia (?) - 62 F W - At Home - $40/[blank] - SC Unable to read and write Using the information on Leticia McCLANAHAN from the 1870 census and the marriage record of Joseph B. COKER and Mary HOLCOMB, I found the following in the 1860 census: 1860 U.S. Census - Alabama - Shelby Co. - Twp. Not Stated - Columbiana P.O. Roll: M653-23 - Page 318 - Image 80 of 225 (ancestry.com) - 10 MAY 1860 527/527 McCLANAHAN, L. - 52 F - Farmer - $80/$300 - SC - Unable to read and write HOLCOMBE, Polly - 25 F - House Keeper - SC - Unable to read and write Samuel - 7 M - AL Frank - 5 M - AL Wm. Edward - 3 M - AL L. McCLANAHAN is probably the Leticia(?) McCLANAHAN in the 1870 census and 'Polly' (Polly HOLCOMBE) was a common nickname for 'Mary'. So, what it looks like is that Samuel, Franklin and William COKER in the 1870 census are actually Samuel, Franklin and William HOLCOMBE and are the children of Mary 'Polly' (McClanahan) HOLCOMBE and her first husband. I'm assuming that Mary was a widow with 3 children when she married Joseph B. COKER. Leach Cemetery in Shelby Co., AL shows the following and bears this assumption out: HOLCOMBE, Frank 20 Feb 1856 04 Nov 1914 HOLCOMBE, Martishie 09 May 1860 21 Mar 1946 Wife of Frank HOLCOMBE I found the family in the 1880 census as follows: 1880 U.S. Census - Alabama - Shelby Co. - Calera Twp. - ED #123 Roll: T9-31 - Page 224B - Image 10 of 16 (ancestry.com) - 22 JUN 1880 485/512 COKER, Joseph - W M 42 - Married - Farmer - AL AL AL - Unable to read and write Mary - W F 44 - Wife - Married - Keeping House - SC SC SC - Unable to read and write Rachel - W F 17 - Daughter - Single - At Home - Unable to read and write - AL SC(sic) SC Leonard - W M 13 - Son - Single - At Home - Works of Farm - Unable to read and write - AL AL SC Noah - W M 11 - Son - Single - Works of Farm - Unable to read and write - AL AL SC Benjamin - W M 8 - Son - Single - AL AL SC Lecia (?) - W F 6 - Daughter - Single - AL AL SC Mary - W F 4 - Daughter - Single - TN AL SC In 1900, Joseph has died and Mary is living with her son Leonard as follows. This agrees with the cemetery records that I posted earlier. 1900 U.S. Census - Alabama - Shelby Co. - Columbiana Twp. - ED #120 Roll: T623-39 - Page 18B - Image 35 of 38 (ancestry.com) - 20 JUN 1900 338/353 COAKER (sic), Leonard - Head - W M Feb 1867 - Age 33 - Married/13 yrs - AL AL AL - Farmer - Unable to read and write Sallie - Wife - W F June 1861 - Age 38 - Married/13 yrs - 6 kids/6 living - GA GA GA - Unable to read and write Clifton - Son - W M July 1887 - Age 12 - Single - Al AL GA - Did not attend school - Can read but unable to write Walter - Son - W M May 1889 - Age 11 - Single - Al AL GA - Did not attended school Ella - Daughter - W F Feb 1891 - Age 9 - Single - Al AL GA Francis - Daughter - W F Apr 1893 - Age 7 - Single - Al AL GA Mary - Daughter - W F Dec 1895 - Age 4 - Single - Al AL GA Alma - Daughter - W F July 1898 - Age 1 - Single - Al AL GA Mary - Mother - w F July 1832 - Age 67 - Widowed - 10 kids/8 living - SC SC SC - Unable to read and write So, this still doesn't solve the problem of who the parents of Joseph B. COKER are. The IGI shows that a Joseph COKER married Luisa McCAREY 08 FEB 1856 in Bibb Co., AL. Information on the internet suggests that this Joseph is the Joseph in the 1850 census that I posted earlier. In 1860, they are living in West Side Cahaba River, Bibb Co., AL. In 1870, Joseph is gone and Louisa is living with her children Nancy J., Mandy, Mary and America in Township 11 Range 9, Winston Co., AL. If I come across any more information, I will post it and would be curious if anyone else can provide more.
