Hi Beth, I have been stuck on your question for years. I found a James Coker listed in the Tuscaloosa Co AL 1850 census that lists a number of children including a male age 19. This census is extremely difficult to read but it looks like Acy or Asy. The 1850 census in that county was actually taken in 1851 so the age also fits (Asa was born in 1832). If this is the case then James is Asa's father. There is no female of the right age listed in the census for a mother. Also, I don't think that John Malachi is Asa's brother although could be a cousin. Good luck and let me know if you find any confirmation, rebuttal or additional info.
