    1. Coker family in McMullen Co., TX
    2. There was a Coker family in McMullen County, Texas in the mid to late 1800s. I have pulled up the links to any Coker information if anybody is interested in this Coker family. A note before you start. McMullen County was created in 1856, but not until 1877 was it officially organized. Prior to 1877 records for McMullen County citizens are most likely to be found in Live Oak County and some records, such as marriage are also found in Atascosa County. The Coker family in San Antonio, as you probably know, is descended from Joseph Coker who is buried at the Coker Cemetery. From this family I cannot see any relationship to Lena. However, we never know what being "related" might mean. The 1880 census of Hopkins Co (Sulphur Springs TX) shows a George W. Coker age 25 born TN and wife Balzonia age 21 born TN; no children. It also shows a W.M. Coker age 62 born AL and wife Sarah age 59 born MS. Living with them is a Caroline Johnson, relationship called "other" age 27 born MS and young male Willie Johnson age10 born MS, relationship "other". Then one g-son Isaac Coker age 7, born TX. I don't know if this helps any or not. As you can see in this 1880 census, we cannot identify your William and Jane, but they could have died before the census. This Caroline Johnson could be a widowed/divorced niece to W.M. or Sarah. Next door on the census to W.M. Coker & family is J. L. Coker age 32 born MS and wife Elizabeth age 33 born AR. They have three daus showing all born TX and listed by initials only: M.A., A.L. and S.I. ages 5 down to 9 months. Let me know if this gives any clues. Also let me know if you have come across any of these surnames in Sulphur Springs: Moore, Jones, Goodwyn, McMeans or Capps.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BVJ.2ACIB/1285 Message Board Post: Seeking information regarding Hiram Coker, born about 1829; married Elizabeth Whitten 17 December 1829 Walton Co., GA. They were in 1830 Walton Co., GA census; 1840 Muscogee Co., GA census [where his oldest son, Valentine Martin (or Marlin) had been born in 1832]; 1850 Muscogee Co., census; 1860 Chatthoochee Co., GA census (where the name was spelled "Koker"). The children of Hiram and Elizabeth, as listed in the 1850 Muscogee Co. census were: Valentine Martin Coker, b. 18 Aug 1832 Muscogee Co. William Coker, b. abt 1834 Seaborn Coker, b. abt 1836 Duncan E. Coker, b. abt 1836 Mary L. (Missouri) Coker , b. abt 1842 Martha Coker, b. abt 1844 Ludoskie (female), b. abt 1846 (The census taker failed to record the birth place of anyone in this family in that census!) Being descended from that oldest son, I have been able to follow Valentine Martin/Marlin Coker through 1850, 1860, the War Between the States, and 1870, until his death in 1872. What I wish to learn is: Who were the parents of Hiram Coker? WHAT happened to the other sons of Hiram? The 3 daughters and 1 other son, Anderson Joseph, b. abt 1851, were with Hiram in the 1860 Chatthoochee Co. census, but not one of the other sons can be found after 1850. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Janice, Marietta, GA

    3. Theron Smith wrote this in 2001. I haven't heard from him in a good while. Is Theron still doing Coker research? Anyway this is what he wrote concerning Annie Ratliff. There were just too many John Cokers around. Thought I would repeat Theron's notes of 2001. >John Coker of Franklin Co. had Armon who m.Nancy Hill, sister of my g gf, >and his brothers, Melmuth Washington, Mansel, William M and John. Some >Coker researchers think this is the John who m. Annie Ratliff, presumbaly >either half or full Cherokee. At 08:14 AM 7/18/2005, you wrote: >NOTE: Bob remember this, >1810 Laurens SC, p.283, Dicey with three younger males (sons John, James >and Joseph) I was trying to keep the first email from getting too long. Yes, Dicey shows up as head of household in 1810. The name Dicey doesn't show up again anywhere in Laurens. We assume the three younger males are John 1789, James 1797 and Joseph 1799. Notice there is a gap of 8 years between John and James. Could have been that one or two brothers/sisters died or the first wife died after John's birth. We can't assume Nancy came up with the name Dicey for the 1810 census only. Dicey is nickname more commonly used for Diana, some other more complicated names ending in "......cias, etc.) Who came up with Annie Ratliff being another wife of John? What led to that assumption? The next problem is since Nancy was in Jackson Co GA in 1808 (dowager settlement papers), we could check the 1810 census - but it doesn't exist. Checking the 1809 Tax List, we find only Phillip and Thompson Coker. But then we can't assume Nancy would be on the tax list if she had nothing to tax. One other note on Jackson Co GA. In "Historical Notes by John Elrod" page 212. In the 1807 land lottery, a John Coker is listed along with Robert Coker Sr, who we assume is from Laurens Co. Cokers. Elrod states these records are the the State of GA Archives. So we have a lot of John Cokers with no way to prove who they are. Since John Coker doesn't show up on any other Jackson Co record, we don't know where he ended up. More later, trying to keep focus. More later, trying to keep focus on the problems. >1820 Laurens, p. 014, son John with mother Dicey and son James p. 018, son >Joseph with wife and two children under 10 who I assume are the younger >sister and brother of Malinda Brown, Joseph's wife. Malinda's father died 1813 and her mother, Nancy, remarried by 1820. 1830 Franklin Co. TN p.63 Joseph with family and older female (50-60) living with them. Dicey would have to be 60 years old at this point to have son John b. 1789. p.63 James with family next door. I believe that there is a John in the family of Joseph and Mary Aldridge Coker as a son. There is enough documentation. You can not rule out that John married again or that John died or that John did not die and lived alone. 3. There's not much activity on here so I would like to start a discussion on the Joseph and Mary Aldridge Coker family in Laurens Co. SC. For many years I have tried to gather documents that would connect their son, John, as the father of three brothers who came to Texas between 1834 & 1846. The will of Joseph Coker in 1792 names John as "my youngest son". He would inherit a horse, a cow & calf and a sow & sowlet. I have a copy of the original will. There are problems in identifying this John Coker. There are deeds where Nancy Coker, widow of a John Coker applies for dower rights on land they sold in 1792 in Laurens Co. It is stated that this John Coker died intestate. Nancy is shown to be in Jackson Co GA 1808 when she receives her dower settlement. There is at least one more John Coker in Laurens. He shows up in the Journals of the Court Book 1. On 16 Nov 1807 the District of Laurens Court orders the names of the constables summoned to attend and serve........the following answered to wit: John Nabours, John Atwood, John McDavid, John Coker and several others. Also in the April 1809 term John Coker was called and answered. In April 1810 John Coker vs John Meriwether case tried. Now we have two John Cokers, one married to a Nancy. The other is an unknown but could certainly be father to above three brothers. Somewhere on here I have seen reference to the fact that John also married an Annie Ratliff. I would appreciate learning who this might be. The Nancy named here could be a Dial, but I haven't seen any documentation. I know this can become confusing, but if there are enough descendants of the Joseph and Mary Aldridge Coker family, it could be enlightening and fun. The other sons of Joseph were William (said to have left home and gotten his inheritance early so not mentioned in the will), Drury, Calvin and Thomas. Thomas was in RevWar and mentions in his pension that Jeanette, his sister, married Col. John Armstrong.
