We are currently seeking to adopt, and something has come up that has us chasing our family ancestry. We saw Mr. Holt's comments about putting the Coker info on CD. We would be extremely interested in that. Please email with details. Also, we are running around in circles as to Joseph Dempsey Coker. He is my husband's gggg-grandfather, which goes from Ronald G. Coker, Gordon W. Coker, John Kenner Coker, George M. Dallas Coker, William "Prairie Bill" Coker, to Joseph Coker. We are trying to find out if Prairie Bill was the son of one of Joseph's Cherokee wives. We have two places that says he was born to Joseph and Ainey, but one place that says born to Mary Ann Brown. We are also finding conflicting stories on how many children Joseph had with each of his three wives. Can anyone please help? We need to find anything ASAP. Thanks in advance for your help. My grandfather was named Calvin Coker. I think he was born 1845 or 46 in Ark. then to Texas then Choctaw Co... Ok. He had several brothers but I don't know their names. One of my fathers brothers was Otis Coker and he had a son named Hansford. Could he have been named after his grandfathers brother? There is record of a Hansford Coker in Denton in the early 1880's. I don't know for sure where my father was born but my mother said Denton and she had Denton put on his tombstone. Try Bettyebob1, maybe she has found out something.

Could be a descendant of James Lide Coker of Hartsville, SC. He was a Major in the Confederate army and prominent citizen after the war (Coker College is named for him). I corresponded with his great-grandson, James Lide Coker IV, several years ago -- so his father could be the James Coker III you are looking for. I wasn't around in 1920, so I'm pretty sure it isn't a photo of me. I recently had the chance to spend some time in Morganton. The court records were burned during the War but some have been "reconstituted". I looked through the records they had and some from Rowan county. Burke was made from it in 1777. Hope some of this helps and is not repetative. The "earliest" record I found was an appointment of Susanah Coker as administrator of the estate of Thomas Coker on 17 Jul 1760. Could they be the parents of William and Charles who both ended up in Knoxville? A William Coker recieved 397 acres in 1766. The "last" record I found was of Joseph Coker in 1804. The earliest record I found of him was in 1795, making him born at least 1774. Who is he? The "lost" brother of Charles and William? One of thier sons? Records from Knoxville seem to indicate he belonged to Charles. I suspect the elder Charles and William left the area due to thier "tory" charges. William got 400 acres by the Globe community in 1779 but is was transferred to Charles. They were both involved in lawsuits through 1784, when they "disappear" for awhile. A Charles Coker, Sr appears in a 1799 tax list with another Charles and a William, whom I believe are his sons. Is Sr a son of the "first" Charles or William? Only Joseph appears in the 1800 cencus. The Moores, especially Jesse, had dealings with Charles and Joseph Coker. According to War records, it had to have been Jesse Sr's sister Judith who we believe married Charles, not his daughter. Of note was an estate abstract of Edward Lee which names Jesse Moore as co-administrator. There is a line which reads " hiers 1791-1995: William Coker, Jr, for wife Molly Lee and/or Charles Coker, Jr" Any clues to this? Did Molly marry two Cokers? Please email me direct if further details wanted. Hope this was helpful. Tom
